With the ISIL in Ramadi increasingly cut-off and isolated by the Iraqi security forces, terrorists were spotted loading hundreds of mortar and rocket rounds onto a boat, which then attempted to smuggle the ammunition down the Euphrates river. A direct hit by one of the Reaper’s Hellfires sank the boat and its cargo.
The Reaper then destroyed three vehicles – two armoured trucks and a bull-dozer – using a pair of Hellfire missiles and a Paveway guided bomb, with significant secondary explosions confirming large quantities of explosives. Elsewhere in Iraq, a second Reaper successfully attacked a terrorist position with a Hellfire, whilst GR4s located an enemy engineering vehicle near Mosul, constructing a fortified position, and destroyed it with a Paveway.

On Sep. 8, coalition military forces continued to attack ISIL terrorists in Syria and Iraq. In Syria, coalition military forces conducted three airstrikes using attack, bomber fighter and remotely piloted aircraft. Separately in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted 14 airstrikes coordinated with the government of Iraq using attack, bomber, fighter, fighter-attack and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL targets.
In coordination with the Government of Iraq, the Coalition conducted airstrikes against an ISIL operating base located near Ramadi.
“Coalition strikes targeted and destroyed a large Daesh staging facility that housed weapons caches, combat equipment and included a multitude of prepared defensive positions” said Col. Michael Indovina, spokesman, CJTF-OIR. “This facility was a key Daesh command and supply hub in the Ramadi region and was being used to store large amounts of homemade explosives, as well as VBIED components. Additional CJTF-OIR Report:
‘September 9th: In coordination with the Government of Iraq, the Coalition conducted airstrikes Sept. 8 against an ISIL operating base and staging area located in a stadium near Ramadi.
The stadium was a key ISIL command and supply hub in the Ramadi region and was being used to store large amounts of homemade explosives, weapons and ammunition as well as VBIED components. ISIL used the stadium as a base of operations to control fighters across the Ramadi region, and as a central node for lethal aid funneled down the Euphrates River Valley. Destroying this hub will significantly disrupt ISIL’s ability to conduct operations and resupply their fighters in Ramadi.’

From French MoD:
[France announces first anti-Daesh reconnaissance flights over Syria, as an expected prelude to airstrikes]

From UK MoD:
‘On Tuesday 8 September, a Reaper patrolling over western Iraq discovered several large stockpiles of explosives close to the Euphrates River. It destroyed one of the stockpiles with its own Hellfire missile – a skiff waiting to transport the explosives was sunk in the blast – and helped coalition fast jets target three more. The Reaper’s crew also provided support to successful air strikes on a terrorist-held compound and a fighting position.’

Summary for week ending September 8th 2015
[Reports 15 new missions, with 6,000 flight hours in total now logged]

From Danish MoD:
Summary for week ending September 8th 2015
[Reports 10 new missions, with 5 bombs dropped, in Nineveh, Salah Al Din and Al Anbar provinces]

From CJTF-OIR:
AUSTRALIA to extend air operations against Dash into  Syria
Joint Press release: The Hon. Tony Abbott MP, Prime Minister
The Hon. Kevin Andrews MP, Minister for Defence
The Government has decided to extend Australia’s air strikes against Daesh into Syria. This marks the next phase of Australia’s contribution to the international coalition effort to disrupt, degrade and ultimately defeat the Daesh death cult.
The decision to expand air operations into Syria has been given careful consideration. It follows Iraq’s requests for international assistance to strike Daesh strongholds, and a formal request from the Obama Administration.
The legal basis for these operations is the collective self-defence of Iraq.
The Daesh death cult does not respect borders and threatens the security of Iraq and the international community from its safe havens in Syria.
Daesh controls a large amount of territory in eastern Syria that serves as a source of recruitment and oil revenues, and as a base from which it continues to launch attacks in both Syria and Iraq.
From Syria, Daesh has been able to operate training bases, conduct planning and preparation for attacks, and move fighters and materiel into, and out of, Iraq.
The extension of the Australian Defence Force’s operations into Syria will help protect Iraq and its people from Daesh attacks inside Iraq and from across the border in Syria.
The Daesh death cult is reaching out to Australians, as terrorist incidents and disrupted attacks here have demonstrated.
Australia joins a number of other nations – including the United States, Canada, Arab countries and Turkey – which are already contributing to the effort against Daesh in Syria.
Australia’s Air Task Group, deployed to the Middle East region, consists of six F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, a KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport and an E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft.
Australia remains committed to the international effort to counter Daesh, which threatens stability in Iraq and the Middle East and the security of Australians at home and in our region.
As the Government has stated before, the size and nature of Australia’s overall commitment to defeat Daesh will remain under regular review.
This is a decision that is firmly in Australia’s national interest. It reflects the Government’s steadfast commitment to keeping Australians safe from terrorism, preventing the spread of violent extremism to our shores and responding to a deepening humanitarian crisis.’

[Reports 20 new missions – 5 of them ISR including in Syria. Of these, ‘five strikes led to the destruction of 7 goals in the areas of Fallujah, Mosul and Sinjar: buildings, vehicles and river barges used by the terrorist group Daesh’]

‘The Australian Air Task Group (ATG) completed its first operational mission in Syria overnight, retuning to base in the Middle East without incident. No weapons were released during the mission.
The mission provided on-call interdiction and dynamic targeting support as part of the international coalition’s effort to disrupt and degrade Daesh.
Two Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18A Hornets, a KC-30A air-to-air refuelling aircraft and E-7A Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft combined during the mission.
ATG Commander, Air Commodore Stu Bellingham said the Hornets searched points of interest for enemy activity in eastern Syria, reporting to the international coalition’s Combined Air Operations Centre through the E-7A aircraft.
“Daesh controls a large amount of territory in eastern Syria that serves as a source of recruitment and oil revenues, and as a base from which it continues to launch attacks into Iraq”, Air Commodore Bellingham said.
“The Hornets were also prepared for any short notice high priority tasking which could include surveillance and weapons release,” Air Commodore Bellingham said. The KC-30A provided air-to-air refuelling support to the F/A-18A Hornets throughout the mission.
The ATG is part of Operation OKRA, the Australian Defence Force’s contribution to the international effort to combat the Daesh terrorist threat in Iraq and Syria. The Australian ATG will continue to plan and conduct air strikes against Daesh in Iraq and Syria as part of coalition strike operations aimed at disrupting and degrading Daesh strongholds.’

From Australian MoD:
Statement to Parliament by Defence Minister Kevin Andrews MP

‘Since my last Defence Force operations update to the Parliament, we’ve seen further atrocities and terrorist attacks either conducted, or inspired by, the terrorist movement known as Daesh.
Beyond Iraq and Syria, Australia’s thoughts and condolences are with the people of France, Kuwait, Tunisia, Turkey and, most recently, Saudi Arabia whose countries have suffered at the hands of Daesh terrorists.
These attacks reaffirm that Daesh is a threat not only to the Middle East, but to all countries, including Australia.
It is for this reason that the Australian Government remains committed to the international effort to disrupt, degrade and ultimately defeat Daesh.
This commitment is underscored by the Government’s decision to extend Australian Defence Force air strikes against Daesh into eastern Syria. This is a logical extension of our existing commitment in the Middle East.
As the Government announced last week, this marks the next phase of Australia’s contribution to our important campaign against Daesh.
Daesh does not respect borders and threatens the security of Iraq and the international community from its safe havens and command centres in Syria.
It controls a large amount of territory in eastern Syria that serves as a source of recruitment and oil revenues. From Syria, Daesh has been able to operate its training bases, conduct planning and preparation for attacks, and move fighters and equipment into, and out of, Iraq.
Royal Australian Air Force efforts in eastern Syria will are being directed solely at Daesh – we will not be engaging in the broader conflict in Syria.
The legal basis for Australia’s air operations in Syria remains the collective self-defence of Iraq. We strongly believe Iraq should not be left to face this horrendous threat alone.
This is why Australia is continuing its Advise and Assist and Building Partner Capacity missions to develop the capacity of the Iraqi Security Forces, and continues to contribute an Air Task Group, at the request of, and to support, the Iraqi Government….
Australia’s Air Task Group remains a leading contributor of platforms, support personnel and missions flown in the coalition air campaign against Daesh.
As at 13 September, the Air Task Group had completed a total of 408 ADF airstrike missions over Iraq.

Specifically,

  • Our F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft have completed 209 missions, releasing 278 weapons;
  • The F/A-18 Hornet aircraft have completed 199 missions, releasing 237 weapons;
  • The KC-30A air-to-air refuelling aircraft has conducted 394 missions, offloading nearly 32 million pounds of fuel to Australian and coalition aircraft; and
  • The E-7A Wedgetail airborne early warning and control aircraft has conducted 135 command and control missions.

As has been reported, the Air Task Group has completed its first strike against a Daesh target in eastern Syria, destroying an Armoured Personnel Carrier. Two of our F/A-18 Hornets identified the Personnel Carrier, hidden in a Daesh compound.
The information was reported back to the Combined Air Operations Centre via the RAAF E-7A Wedgetail. Upon receiving authorisation to proceed, one of the Hornets employed a precision guided weapon to destroy the target.’

Summary for week ending September 15th 2015
[Reports nine new missions [[later corrected to 11]] and three bombs dropped which included an Air Interdiction mission: ‘This week, the objectives of the bombs been buildings used by ISIL.’]

From Danish MoD:
Summary for week ending September 22nd 2015
[Reports 12 new missions with two bombs dropped]

‘On 26 September 2015, while taking part in coalition operations in support of Iraqi security forces, four CF-18 Hornets successfully struck an Improvised Explosive Device factory in Hit using precision guided munitions.
On 26 September 2015, while taking part in coalition operations in support of Iraqi security forces, two CF-18 Hornets successfully struck an ISIS fighting position in the vicinity of Mosul using precision guided munitions.’

Additional Coalition release:
‘ Coalition airstrikes destroyed multiple enemy targets near Hit and Kubaysah, Iraq in coordination with and in support of the Government of Iraq Sept. 26, 2015. The strikes attacked key ISIL targets in the Anbar province, including two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) production facilities, an ISIL headquarters building, and an ISIL staging area at the Kubaysah cement factory.
“The Coalition continues to attack Daesh tactical capability in Iraq,” said Col. Christopher Garver, Public Affairs Officer for CJTF-OIR. “By degrading Daesh’s capacity to produce dangerous IEDs and stage resources, we are setting the conditions in Anbar for the eventual liberation of the province by Iraqi Security Forces.”
The Coalition continues to systematically target the Daesh IED network because these weapons are a key component of ISIL tactics. IEDs of all types pose a major threat to ISF and indiscriminately kill civilians, which makes reducing Daesh’s capability to produce them that much more important.
The Coalition targeted only portions of the Kubaysah cement factory because those portions were being used by Daesh as a staging area for their fighters, equipment, and weapons. The Coalition takes great care to reduce collateral damage and preserve Iraqi infrastructure.
The destruction of these targets will further degrade ISIL’s ability to conduct operations in the Euphrates River Valley. These strikes are part of ongoing coalition operations in Anbar province to assist the Government of Iraq to degrade and ultimately defeat Daesh terrorists.’

From UK MoD
September 26th 2015: The UK will extend its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) commitment to Coalition operations in Iraq and Syria, the Defence Secretary has announced.
The deployment of RAF Sentinel aircraft, the most advanced airborne surveillance system of its kind in the world, will be extended until 2016. It is the RAF’s only long-range wide area battlefield surveillance aircraft, using two types of radar it is able to identify and track multiple targets over great distances. Flying three missions a week, the aircraft will continue to provide critical information which allows British and coalition forces to hit ISIL targets on the ground.
The announcement comes as the UK’s involvement in counter-ISIL operations reaches the one year point. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

The fight against ISIL is our top operational priority and Britain is playing a vital role. Our armed forces have conducted more than 300 strikes, flown almost a third of all coalition surveillance flights and trained over 2,000 local troops.

In 2014 ISIL enjoyed near total freedom of movement across much of Iraq but we’ve helped stop the jihadist advance, reclaiming a quarter of ISIL-held territory.

Now we must build on this progress. We will not let up until we have defeated this barbaric terrorist organisation.”

On the 26th September 2014 Parliament voted to assist the Iraqi government in their fight against ISIL terrorists. The UK joined a 62 nation Global Coalition made up of international partners including nations from the Middle East, all united in a determination to degrade and ultimately defeat ISIL.

Since then the UK has provided forces and equipment that few other nations can. Currently there are around 800 personnel, including the Coalition Deputy Commander, supporting the campaign:

  • RAF Tornados and Reaper equipped with precision munitions, Brimstone and Hellfire missiles and Paveway IV bombs, have conducted more than 300 successful strikes and have flown over 1300 missions.
  • RAF Reaper, Airseeker and Sentinel aircraft have contributed 30 per cent of Coalition surveillance flights.
  • We have trained nearly 2000 Iraqi personnel who are taking the fight to ISIL in their own country. This includes leading the Coalition’s counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) training programme – crucial to enabling local forces to deal safely with improvised explosives as they advance on ISIL territory.
  • We have gifted half a million rounds of ammunition, numerous weapons, 1000 IED detectors and over 50 tonnes of non-lethal support, while RAF transport planes have delivered hundreds of tonnes of equipment gifted by other nations.

With the support provided by Britain, at the heart of the Coalition, Iraqi forces have regained 25 per cent of the territory that ISIL held after its advance last summer. They have taken back 200 square kilometres in the North; retaken Tikrit in the centre, with 100,000 citizens now having returned to the city; and have pushed ISIL out of Diyala province in the East.’

From French MoD:
[France reports conducting its first airstrike in Syria: a five hour mission targeting a Daesh training camp south of Dayr ez Zour]

Additional report from CJTF-OIR:
Coalition forces are supporting a Peshmerga offensive operation against Daesh terrorists west of Kirkuk, Iraq that began Sept. 30, 2015. Peshmerga fighters successfully penetrated Daesh defensive positions, cleared fighters, liberated eight villages, and re-established government control over approximately 140 square kilometers between Huwayjah and Kirkuk.
Coalition aircraft conducted more than 50 airstrikes in support of this operation. Airstrikes against Daesh positions began several days before the ground operation in order to set favorable conditions for the Peshmerga by degrading Daesh’s ability to fight.
“The Peshmerga fighters continue to reduce Daesh’s initial gains in northern Iraq,” said Col. Christopher Garver, Public Affairs Officer for CJTF-OIR. “This was another important fight in the overall effort to degrade and ultimately defeat Daesh”.
In the last four weeks, the Peshmerga have conducted three successful offensive operations against Daesh terrorists, returning more than 400 square kilometers of territory to government control, liberating 23 villages in the process, and helping to set the conditions for local citizens to return to their homes.

Update for week ending September 29th 2015

[Denmark’s final weekly report before its withdrawal from the Coalition reports 12 new missions and 19 bombs dropped during operations in Nineveh, Salah al Din and Anbar provinces. A total of 493 bombs were dropped in the year-long campaign]

‘Mission Update – RDAF F-16 Operation Inherent Resolve
