Palestinian Territories – The Palestinian Center for the Protection of Journalists (PJPC) mourns journalist Mohammed al-Bardawil, who was killed along with his wife and three children in an Israeli airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip.

The center explains that al-Bardawil, 38, who worked for the local Al-Aqsa Radio for a decade and a half, was killed along with his family in an Israeli airstrike that targeted his home in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, at dawn on Tuesday.

Al-Bardawil documented Israeli war crimes and provided relief to displaced families during the current war.

Al-Bardawil is the first journalist killed this month and the fourth since the Israeli army resumed its war on Gaza on March 18.

The center's preliminary statistics indicate that approximately 209 journalists have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war on October 7, 2023, an unprecedented number in the history of modern conflicts, raising serious questions about the commitment of international parties to protecting journalists in conflict zones.

The Center for Protecting Journalists (CPJ) affirms that the killing of al-Bardawil and his family is part of a series of human rights violations committed by Israel against Palestinian civilians, including journalists who are supposed to be protected under international law.

The Center reiterates its call to the international community to assume its moral and legal responsibilities and ensure the protection of journalists and enable them to carry out their work without hindrance, in accordance with the principles of press freedom and international law.

Furthermore, the Center for Protecting Journalists (CPJ) calls on the Palestinian community to condemn the deadly attacks against journalists, investigate these incidents, and hold those responsible accountable. It emphasizes that targeting journalists constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

Civilian journalists covering armed conflicts are considered civilians and must be protected from attack, in accordance with Article 79 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions. Has this legal provision lost its value?

ويوضح المركز أن البردويل (38 عامًا)، الذي عمل لصالح إذاعة الأقصى المحلية منذ عقد ونصف، قُتل مع عائلته جراء غارة إسرائيلية استهدفت منزله بمدينة خان يونس جنوبي قطاع غزة فجر اليوم الثلاثاء.

وعمل البردويل على توثيق جرائم الحرب الإسرائيلية وإغاثة الأسر النازحة خلال الحرب الحالية.

ويُعدّ البردويل أول صحفي يُقتل خلال الشهر الجاري والرابع منذ استئناف الجيش الإسرائيلي الحرب على غزة يوم 18 مارس/آذار الماضي.

وتشير احصاءات المركز الأولية إلى مقتل حوالي 209 صحفي في قطاع غزة منذ بدء الحرب في السابع من تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 2023، وهو رقم غير مسبوق في تاريخ النزاعات الحديثة، مما يثير تساؤلات جدية حول مدى التزام الأطراف الدولية بحماية الصحفيين في مناطق النزاع.

يؤكد مركز حماية الصحفيين الفلسطينيين أن مقتل البردويل وعائلته يندرج ضمن سلسلة انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان التي ترتكبها إسرائيل ضد المدنيين الفلسطينيين، بما في ذلك الصحفيين الذين يُفترض أن يتمتعوا بالحماية وفقًا للقانون الدولي.

يجدد المركز دعوته إلى المجتمع الدولي لتحمل مسؤولياته الأخلاقية والقانونية، وضمان حماية الصحفيين وتمكينهم من أداء عملهم دون عوائق، بما يتماشى مع مبادئ حرية الصحافة والقانون الدولي.

علاوة على ذلك، يطالب مركز حماية الصحفيين الفلسطينيين بإدانة الهجمات المميتة ضد الصحفيين والتحقيق في هذه الحوادث ومحاسبة المسؤولين عنها، مؤكدًا أن استهداف الصحفيين يشكل انتهاكًا صارخًا للقانون الدولي الإنساني.
