Palestinian Territories – The Palestinian Center for the Protection of Journalists (PJPC) mourns journalist Hussam al-Titi, who was killed along with his wife and daughter in an Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip, bringing the number of journalists killed this month to five.

The center explains that al-Titi, 46, who worked for the American network ABC for two decades, was killed with his family in his home in Gaza City after the Israeli army resumed its war on the Strip at dawn last Tuesday.

Al-Titi was documenting Israeli war crimes during the current war.

The Israeli army killed three other journalists this month: Bilal Abu Matar, Mahmoud Aslim, and Mahmoud al-Sarraj, while documenting humanitarian relief efforts in the town of Beit Lahia, north of the Gaza Strip, on the 15th of this month. It also announced the death of journalist Alaa Asaad Hashem, who succumbed to injuries she sustained in an earlier Israeli airstrike on Gaza City.

The PJPC notes that the killing of al-Titi and his family is part of a series of human rights violations committed by Israel against Palestinian civilians, including journalists who are supposed to be protected under international law.

Since October 2023, the Center has documented grave violations against journalists working in the Gaza Strip, with hundreds being directly targeted, resulting in the deaths of approximately 210 journalists and the injury of hundreds more. More than 171 journalists have also been arrested, 51 of whom remain in detention.

The Center reiterates its call to the international community to uphold its moral and legal responsibilities and ensure the protection of journalists and enable them to carry out their work without hindrance, in accordance with the principles of press freedom and international law.

Furthermore, the Center calls on the Palestinian Journalists' Protection Center to condemn the deadly attacks against journalists, investigate these incidents, and hold those responsible accountable, stressing that targeting journalists constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

According to Article 79 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, civilian journalists covering armed conflicts are considered civilians and must be protected from attack. Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court also stipulates that deliberate attacks against civilians, including journalists, constitute war crimes.

الأراضي الفلسطينية – ينعى مركز حماية الصحفيين الفلسطينيين (PJPC) الصحفي حسام التيتي، الذي قُتل مع زوجته وابنته في غارة إسرائيلية على قطاع غزة، ليصبح عدد الصحفيين الذين قُتلوا خلال الشهر الجاري خمسة.

ويوضح المركز أن التيتي (46 عامًا)، الذي عمل لصالح شبكة “إيه بي سي” الأمريكية لمدة عقدين، قُتل مع عائلته في منزله بمدينة غزة بعد استئناف الجيش الإسرائيلي حربه على القطاع فجر الثلاثاء الماضي.

وكان التيتي يوثق جرائم الحرب الإسرائيلية خلال الحرب الحالية.

وقتل الجيش الإسرائيلي ثلاثة صحفيين آخرين هذا الشهر، وهم بلال أبو مطر ومحمود أسليم ومحمود السراج، أثناء توثيقهم أعمال إغاثة إنسانية في بلدة بيت لاهيا شمال القطاع يوم 15 من الشهر الجاري. كما أعلن عن مقتل الصحفية آلاء أسعد هاشم متأثرة بإصابتها بقصف إسرائيلي سابق على مدينة غزة.

يشير مركز حماية الصحفيين الفلسطينيين إن مقتل التيتي وعائلته يندرج ضمن سلسلة انتهاكات حقوق الإنسان التي ترتكبها إسرائيل ضد المدنيين الفلسطينيين، بما في ذلك الصحفيين الذين يُفترض أن يتمتعوا بالحماية وفقًا للقانون الدولي.

منذ أكتوبر 2023، وثق المركز انتهاكات جسيمة بحق الصحفيين العاملين في قطاع غزة، حيث تعرض المئات للاستهداف المباشر، مما أدى إلى مقتل حوالي 210 صحفيًا وإصابة مئات آخرين. كما تم اعتقال أكثر من 171 صحفيًا، 51 منهم ما زالوا قيد الاعتقال.

يجدد المركز دعوته إلى المجتمع الدولي لتحمل مسؤولياته الأخلاقية والقانونية، وضمان حماية الصحفيين وتمكينهم من أداء عملهم دون عوائق، بما يتماشى مع مبادئ حرية الصحافة والقانون الدولي.

علاوة على ذلك، يطالب مركز حاية الصحفيين الفلسطينيين بإدانة الهجمات المميتة ضد الصحفيين والتحقيق في هذه الحوادث ومحاسبة المسؤولين عنها، مؤكدًا أن استهداف الصحفيين يشكل انتهاكًا صارخًا للقانون الدولي الإنساني.

ووفقًا للمادة 79 من البروتوكول الإضافي الأول لاتفاقيات جنيف، يُعتبر الصحفيون المدنيون الذين يغطون النزاعات المسلحة أشخاصًا مدنيين ويجب حمايتهم من الهجمات. كما تنص المادة 8 من نظام روما الأساسي للمحكمة الجنائية الدولية على أن الهجمات المتعمدة ضد المدنيين، بما في ذلك الصحفيين، تشكل جرائم حرب.
