Airwars Assessment
In the night between June 21 and June 22, 2025, at least 11 civilians were injured in a series of declared U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had a press conference on June 22nd to announce the overnight strikes, “Operation Midnight Hammer,” in which CENTCOM “deployed multiple combined assets to inflict significant damage at the sites of Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan.” General Caine said during the press conference that “initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction”. There was no mention of casualties within the press conference.
Local sources reported that the strikes resulted in injuries. The clearest casualty figures came from the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS). Its head, Pirhossein Kolivand, confirmed that 11 people were injured, of whom four remained hospitalized, and seven were discharged shortly after treatment. Although the identities of the injured were not publicly disclosed, Red Crescent statements implied that some may have been relief or support personnel stationed near the affected facilities.
The Iranian Ministry of Health announced that all injured individuals transported to medical facilities were free of radiation contamination, and that no special radiation-related treatment was required. Medical teams observed no contamination in surrounding areas, and nuclear-emergency units at nearby hospitals evaluated patients without detecting radiological exposure.
In connection to this incident, sources did not specify whether those injured were civilians or militants. Under International Humanitarian Law, civilian status is assumed unless proven otherwise. In the absence of sources directly identifying the civilian status of individuals harmed in the strikes on the nuclear facilities, in line with IHL, Airwars has assumed civilian status.
As sources did not differentiate between the harm at each site, all eleven injuries have been recorded together in one incident. This incident will be updated should information regarding the harm recorded at each site become available.
