Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: June 24, 2026

In the night between June 21 and June 22, 2025, at least 11 civilians were injured in a series of declared U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had a press conference on June 22nd to announce the overnight strikes, “Operation Midnight Hammer,” in which CENTCOM “deployed multiple combined assets to inflict significant damage at the sites of Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan.” General Caine said during the press conference that “initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction”. There was no mention of casualties within the press conference.

Local sources reported that the strikes resulted in injuries. The clearest casualty figures came from the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS). Its head, Pirhossein Kolivand, confirmed that 11 people were injured, of whom four remained hospitalized, and seven were discharged shortly after treatment. Although the identities of the injured were not publicly disclosed, Red Crescent statements implied that some may have been relief or support personnel stationed near the affected facilities.

The Iranian Ministry of Health announced that all injured individuals transported to medical facilities were free of radiation contamination, and that no special radiation-related treatment was required. Medical teams observed no contamination in surrounding areas, and nuclear-emergency units at nearby hospitals evaluated patients without detecting radiological exposure.

In connection to this incident, sources did not specify whether those injured were civilians or militants. Under International Humanitarian Law, civilian status is assumed unless proven otherwise. In the absence of sources directly identifying the civilian status of individuals harmed in the strikes on the nuclear facilities, in line with IHL, Airwars has assumed civilian status.

As sources did not differentiate between the harm at each site, all eleven injuries have been recorded together in one incident. This incident will be updated should information regarding the harm recorded at each site become available.

U.S. Forces Strike Report
During a press conference at the Pentagon today, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lauded the success of the U.S. Central Command's overnight strike on three Iranian nuclear facilities. Dubbed "Operation Midnight Hammer," Centcom deployed multiple combined assets to inflict significant damage at the sites of Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan.  "The order we received from our commander in chief was focused, it was powerful and it was clear. We devastated the Iranian nuclear program," Hegseth said at the outset of his remarks, also noting that the operation did not target Iranian troops or citizens.  "Initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction," Caine told the media.  After proceeding quietly and with minimal communication for 18 hours from the U.S. to the target area, the first of seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers dropped two 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator "bunker buster" bombs at the Fordo site yesterday at approximately 6:40 p.m. EDT, Caine said.   The initial mission package also included several decoy aircraft that flew west over the Pacific Ocean as "a deception effort known only to an extremely small number of planners and key leaders here in Washington and [Centcom headquarters]," Caine said. Such tactics were also used in support of the main strike package of aircraft.  "The U.S. employed several deception tactics — including decoys — as the fourth and fifth generation aircraft pushed out in front of the strike package at high altitude and high speed, sweeping in front of the package for enemy fighters and surface-to-air missile threats," Caine said.  Following the initial strike on Fordo, the remaining B-2s went on to deploy their ordnance, eventually totaling 14 MOPs hitting the targeted areas. This was the first operational use of the GBU-57 MOP, Caine noted.   In addition to the MOPs, Caine said a U.S. submarine operating in Centcom's area of responsibility launched more than two dozen Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles at key infrastructure targets at the Isfahan site, bringing the overall total of precision-guided weapons employed during the operation to approximately 75. Caine stated there was no detectable retaliation to the strikes.  "We are unaware of any shots fired at the package on the way out. Iran's fighters did not fly, and it appears that Iran's surface-to-air missile systems did not see us," he said, adding, "Throughout the mission, we maintained the element of surprise." Both Hegseth and Caine shared praise for the military personnel who worked to execute the mission.  "I want to recognize the pilots who flew those bombers, who flew those fighters, who flew those refuelers; [they're] warriors. I want to recognize the sailors on those destroyers, in those subs, on those carriers; [they're] warriors, all of them," Hegseth said, also recognizing soldiers who conducted air and base defense.  "Every American involved in this operation performed flawlessly," he added, also giving recognition to the Israeli government for its contribution to the positioning and preparation of the effort. "This was a complex and high-risk mission, carried out with exceptional skill and discipline by our joint force," Caine said, also noting that the mission demonstrated the "unmatched reach, coordination and capability of the United States military."  "In just a matter of weeks, this went from strategic planning to global execution," he said, adding that he concurs with President Donald J. Trump's assessment that "no other military in the world could have done this."  When asked about the overall intent of the strikes, Hegseth said the mission was specifically focused on preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.  "This mission was not, and has not been, about regime change. The president authorized a precision operation to neutralize the threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear program and [in support of] the collective self-defense of our troops and our ally, Israel," Hegseth said. As to the potential for Iran attempting retaliation for the U.S. strikes, Caine said Centcom is operating under elevated force protection measures throughout the Middle East region and that any retaliation by Iran or its proxies would be "an incredibly poor choice."  "We will defend ourselves. The safety of our service members and civilians remains our highest priority," he said.

The Health Ministry spokesman then responded to concerns raised after the US attack on nuclear facilities, saying: "A wave of repeated calls were received, asking whether radiation was emitted after the US attack on our nuclear facilities, and we published the answer in the form of numerous clips." Kermanpour emphasized: "The general point is that up to this point, we have no concerns about radiation and there is no need for any medicine because basically the places that were attacked do not emit radiation. We have emphasized in several sections that what people are simulating and causing them concern are the events of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Chernobyl. The events that occurred in Iran have nothing to do with these issues, and no atomic bomb has exploded in Iran to worry about such radiation." He added: "But in order to create a sense of peace among the people, the necessary arrangements have been thought of not now, but for years. In the nearest reputable and large centers near our nuclear centers and the nearest hospitals in neighboring provinces, we have nuclear and radiation emergencies where the basic measures that need to be taken for patients to be free of radiation are carried out. There was no trace of radiation damage in the injured in the US attack Kermanpour added: "Fortunately, we examined the injured in yesterday's US aggression and we did not find any trace of radiation damage on their bodies or clothes, and there was no need for special treatment other than to treat their injuries." The spokesman for the Ministry of Health continued: "Unfortunately, a few hours ago, a missile landed in Tehran, which was next to the Shahid Motahari Burn Hospital, which created a lot of fear and panic among the patients. You know that the conditions of burn patients are very special and they are not able to move much. Sometimes their eyes are even closed." Imagine the fear such an incident would create. He noted: Those who claim to abide by international conventions and have nothing to do with the Iranian people must ultimately answer how true they are in this claim. As you know, opposite Shahid Motahari Hospital, Khatam Al-Anbia Hospital and adjacent to Vali Asr Hospital are located, and the wave and sound of the explosion are both harmful to patients. He noted: They are both claiming that, and these conventions have been approved, ratified, and signed in European and Western countries. However, it is surprising and surprising that the same countries and claimants violate such conventions. In all wars and cases threatening countries in terms of security, one of the safest places is the hospitals and Red Crescent and Red Cross and health centers. For this reason, the color of these centers is white. One of the reasons why medical gowns or the Red Cross flag and nurses' uniforms are white is that peace and tranquility prevail in these places. Staining the white paint of hospitals with blood is considered a war crime He added: Staining this white paint with blood is considered a war crime; not from the perspective of our religion and culture, but from the perspective of the international treaties that the Islamic Republic and other countries have signed. The fact that some people are silent and say nothing about staining the white paint of health with blood shows that the circumstances are special and we must ask international centers to react to this issue. We must send our images and reports so that these centers react. Kermanpour noted: Of course, the interesting point here is that since we have published the statistics of martyrs and civilians or images of ambulances and hospitals being targeted internationally, many people in the world and international centers, from the United Nations and its member states to people on the streets in England, Italy, Denmark, etc., are reacting. We hope that these reactions will be strengthened enough to lead to an end to these attacks. 345 surgeries performed since the beginning of the attacks He then announced about the number of wounded: At present, we do not have statistics on critically ill patients, but their number is not significant, most of the patients who were hospitalized since the beginning of the attacks have now been discharged. Since the beginning of the war, we have performed about 345 surgeries, and as of 6 am today, about 2,600 of the wounded have been discharged, and about 400 or 500 patients are still hospitalized in different parts of the country.
