The raid occurred just hours after their return from Syrian government-controlled areas, where they had attended the funeral of Ras al-Ayn police chief Youssef al-Nasser in Hasakah. The SDF militia had prevented his body from being taken to his hometown of Dhiban. Youssef al-Nasser had been killed days earlier during a pursuit of drug traffickers and was buried in the town of Mahkan, east of Deir ez-Zor. The SDF militia then transported the bodies and detainees to the al-Omar oil field, also east of Deir ez-Zor.
