The United States military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM) has announced that it conducted an airstrike in the Puntland region of Somalia, targeting members of the ISIS group operating in northern Somalia.
This operation highlights the ongoing military efforts by the U.S. to combat terrorism in the region.
The strike reportedly occurred approximately 37 miles (60 km) from the port city of Bosaso, situated along the Gulf of Aden.
AFRICOM reported that the airstrike aimed at terrorist operatives, although it did not provide specific details regarding the actual casualties resulting from the attack.
This operation is part of the U.S. military’s continuous efforts in Somalia, particularly in areas where ISIS and Al-Shabaab are active.
The airstrikes serve to disrupt the operations of these extremist groups and support local forces in their fight against terrorism.
Reports indicate that the U.S. provides assistance to Puntland’s forces in their battle against ISIS, especially as the regional administration has not received direct support from the Federal Government in Mogadishu.
This partnership aims to enhance local capabilities in countering the threats posed by these militant organizations.
The recent airstrike marks the 81st conducted by the U.S. in Somalia this year, reflecting the highest level of air operations by the U.S. in the country.
The current administration has surpassed previous records, with 63 airstrikes carried out in 2019, demonstrating an increased military pressure on armed groups operating in Somalia.
