JAMAAME – The Somali National Army’s 43rd Division and Danab Commandos have conducted coordinated operations against Al-Shabaab in several villages near Jamame district in Lower Juba region, military officials said.

The operations, which lasted for hours, were carried out in Muse Haji, Araare, Koban, Bangeni, Maleyley, Baladu-rahma and Maam-bile. These areas are said to have been Al-Shabaab’s hideouts and movement routes in recent times.
A statement issued by the military said that during the operation:

Al-Shabaab’s storage and coordination centers were destroyed.
Military equipment used by the group, including communication equipment and military supplies, was recovered.
Members of the group were removed from their hiding places, although the official number of casualties was not disclosed.

The forces also said they captured several underground tunnels that Al-Shabaab used to communicate within villages in the area.
During the operation, Federal Government warplanes carried out targeted airstrikes on locations where ground forces received their instructions. The airstrikes destroyed Al-Shabaab’s few storage and meeting facilities.
The officers leading the operation said the airstrikes played a key role in dismantling the group’s defenses and destroying its equipment.
The Somali National Army said they were still conducting operations in the Jamame area, conducting searches in villages that were cleared of Al-Shabaab to prevent members of the group from returning.
The officers added that the operations are part of efforts to ensure security in Lower Juba areas, and will continue until general security is ensured.
