Mogadishu (HOL) — U.S. Africa Command said Tuesday it carried out an airstrike targeting ISIS fighters in northeastern Somalia, as counterterrorism operations continue in the rugged mountains of Puntland’s Bari region.
In a statement, AFRICOM said the strike occurred about 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of Bosaso, in areas identified as Togga Baallade and the Al-Miskaad mountain range, where ISIS-Somalia has established hideouts.
The U.S. military said the operation was conducted in coordination with the Somali federal government and Somali security forces. It added that the objective was to degrade ISIS’ operational capabilities and reduce threats to U.S. personnel, interests and allies.
“Specific details about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operational security,” the statement said.
ISIS-Somalia, a smaller but increasingly active offshoot of the Islamic State group, operates primarily in the mountainous terrain of Puntland, where it has clashed with regional security forces in recent years.
The airstrike comes as Puntland authorities have reportedly adjusted their ground operations in the area. Regional officials have indicated that some ISIS fighters are believed to be trapped in mountainous positions after supply routes were disrupted. Puntland security sources say the group had relied on clandestine networks to smuggle food and livestock into remote encampments.
The United States has periodically conducted airstrikes in Somalia against both ISIS and al-Shabab, the al-Qaida-linked militant group that remains the country’s most dominant insurgent force.

Somalia: U.S. Conducts Airstrike Against ISIS Targets in Puntland State
Posted On 11-03-2026, 07:20AM
BOSASO, Somalia — U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted a precision airstrike targeting ISIS-Somalia militants in the remote Cal Miskaad mountain range in the Bari region, military officials confirmed Wednesday.
The strike occurred in the vicinity of the Baallade valley, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of the coastal city of Bosaso. In a brief statement, AFRICOM described the operation as a collective effort coordinated with the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali National Army.
The operation aims to degrade the operational capabilities of ISIS-Somalia, a faction that remains a key target for U.S. counterterrorism efforts in the Horn of Africa.
"AFRICOM and its partners remain committed to disrupting the activities of ISIS-Somalia to prevent the group from threatening the United States, its forces, and its citizens abroad," the command said in a press release.
Military officials declined to release specific details regarding the units involved or the hardware utilized in the strike, citing the need to maintain operational security for ongoing missions in the region.
The U.S. intervention comes at a critical time for security in the Puntland state. Local authorities have recently scaled back ground operations against the extremist group, withdrawing some units from the Cal Miskaad area.
Puntland security officials maintain that the remaining ISIS elements in the mountains are largely isolated. Regional intelligence suggests that while remnants of the group persist in the rugged terrain, their logistics and supply chains—previously managed by clandestine networks providing food and livestock—have been significantly disrupted.

The US military has carried out an airstrike targeting ISIS militants in the Al-Miskaad mountains of the Bari region, as part of efforts to disrupt the group’s operations in the mountainous Puntland region.
AFRICOM, the US Africa Command, announced in a statement that the strike took place about 70 kilometers southeast of the city of Bosaso. The strikes specifically targeted the Baallade Valley and Al-Miskaad mountain ranges, areas where military operations known as Operation Hilaa have been ongoing since December 2024.
The US military said in a statement that the operation was carried out in partnership with the federal government of Somalia and the country’s security forces. The aim of the operation is to disrupt ISIS’s operations and reduce threats to US personnel, interests, and allies.
AFRICOM said it would not release specific details about the units and equipment used in the strike, citing security reasons.
ISIS-Somalia, a small but growing offshoot of the Islamic State group, operates mainly in Puntland’s mountainous region. The group has clashed with Puntland security forces in recent years.
The strikes came as Puntland said it had scaled back its ground operations in the region. Regional officials said some ISIS fighters were now trapped in the mountains after supply routes were cut, putting pressure on the group.
Puntland security sources added that ISIS had previously relied on clandestine networks to bring food and livestock to remote camps in the mountains. The cutting of these routes may have disrupted the group’s ability to obtain supplies and equipment.
The United States continues to conduct airstrikes against terrorist groups in Somalia. The targets of these strikes are mainly the Islamic State in Somalia and al-Shabaab, which remain among the greatest security threats in Somalia.
Operation Hilac, which has been underway in the Al-Shabaab mountains since December, is part of a broader effort to eliminate or weaken terrorist groups operating in the mountainous terrain of eastern Somalia, particularly in the Bari region.
According to information from security sources and official statements, the US airstrikes are becoming an important part of the regional security policy, as Somalia remains in a state of war against terrorist groups.

Ciidamada Mareykanka ayaa fuliyay duqeyn cirka ah oo lagu beegsaday dagaalyahanno ka tirsan ururka ISIS ee ku sugan buuraha Calmiskaad ee gobolka Bari, iyadoo howlgalkani uu qeyb ka yahay dadaallada loo hayo in la wiiqo awooda kooxdaas oo ka howlgasha dhulka buuraha leh ee Puntland.
Taliska AFRICOM, oo ah taliska ciidamada Mareykanka ee Afrika, ayaa baynaan rasmi ah ku shaaciyay in duqeynta ay dhacday qiyaastii 70 kiiloomitir koonfur-bari kaga beegan magaalada Bosaso. Duqeynta ayaa gaar ahaan bartilmaameedsatay deegaanada Togga Baallade iyo silsiladda buuraha Al-Miskaad, meelo ay ka socdaan howlgallo militari oo la yiraahdo Hilaac tan iyo bishii December 2024.
Milateriga Mareykanka ayaa bayaankooda ku sheegay in hawlgalka ay ku fuliyeen iskaashi lala yeeshay dowladda federaalka Soomaaliya iyo ciidamada amniga ee dalka. Ujeeddada howlgalka ayaa ah in la wiiqo awoodda howlgal ee kooxda ISIS isla markaana la yareeyo khataraha ka dhan ah shaqaalaha Mareykanka, danahooda iyo xulafadooda.
AFRICOM ayaa ku dhawaaqday inayan shaacin doonin faahfaahin gaar ah oo ku saabsan cutubyada iyo qalabka loo adeegsaday duqeynta, iyagoo sheegay in sababta loo mamnuucay faahfaahinta ay tahay ilaalinta amniga howlgalka.
Kooxda ISIS-Somalia, oo ah farac yar balse sii kordhaya oo ka tirsan ururka Islamic State, ayaa inta badan ka howlgasha dhulka buuraha leh ee Puntland. Kooxdani waxay marar badan kula dagaalamtay ciidamada amniga ee maamulka Puntland sanadihii la soo dhaafay.
Duqeyntan ayaa ku soo beegantay xilli maamulka Puntland uu sheegay inuu wax ka beddelay howlgaladiisa dhulka ah ee ka socda gobolka. Mas’uuliyiin goboleed ayaa sheegay in qaar ka mid ah dagaalyahannada ISIS ay hadda ku go’doonsan yihiin buuraleyda kadib markii la jaray waddooyinkii sahayda, taas oo kordhin ku noqotay culayska kooxda.
Ilo amniga Puntland ayaa intaas ku dartay in kooxda ISIS ay hore ugu tiirsanayd shabakado qarsoodi ah oo u suurtagelin jiray in cunto iyo xoolo lagu soo geliyo xeryo fogfog oo ku yaalla buuraleyda. Jaritaanka waddooyinkaan ayaa laga yaabaa inuu weeciyay awoodda kooxda inay hesho sahay iyo agab.
Mareykanka ayaa sii wadaya duqeymo cirka ah oo ka dhanka ah ururrada argagixisada ee Soomaaliya. Bartilmaameedsiga duqeymahan ayaa inta badan ku wajahan kooxaha Islamic State in Somalia iyo ururka al-Shabaab, kuwaas oo weli ka mid ah khataraha ugu waaweyn ee amni ee dalka Soomaaliya.
Howlgalka Hilaac oo ka socday buuraha Calmiskaad tan iyo bishii December ayaa qeyb ka ah dadaal ballaaran oo loo hayo in meel laga saaro ama la daciifiyo ururrada argagixisada ee ku dhex howlgasha dhulka buuraha leh ee bariga Soomaaliya, gaar ahaan gobolka Bari.
Sida ay muujinayaan xogaha laga helay ilo amniga iyo bayaanada rasmiga ah, duqeynta cirka ah ee Mareykanka ayaa noqoneysa mid muhiim ah oo ka mid ah xarumaha siyaasadda amniga ee gobolka, iyadoo Soomaaliya ay weli ku jirto xaalad dagaal oo ka dhanka ah kooxaha argagixisada.

The US Africa Command, AFRICOM, has conducted an airstrike targeting ISIS-Somalia militants in the Baallade stream in the Calmiskaad Mountains, Bari region.
A brief press release from AFRICOM said the strike took place approximately 70 km southeast of the city of Bosaso.
AFRICOM, working with the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali National Army, said it will continue to work to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s capabilities to prevent them from posing a threat to the United States, US forces, and US citizens abroad.
The US government did not provide details on the casualties from the airstrike targeting ISIS hideouts in the Calmiskaad Mountains.
The strike comes as the Puntland administration has scaled back military operations against ISIS in the Calmiskaad Mountains, with forces fighting the group being withdrawn from there.
Puntland said a small number of ISIS fighters remained trapped in the Al-Qaida mountains, cut off from their usual food and livestock supplies.
The United States has also provided Puntland with extensive airstrikes and intelligence support in its fight against ISIS, which has been ongoing in the Al-Qaida mountains for more than a year.
