This young athlete, who won a bronze medal in the national championship in the youth freestyle wrestling category in the 79 kg weight category last January, was martyred at the peak of his youth and great aspirations, so now his empty place is showing on the wrestling mat.

Akbar Lotfi, Mehdi Abdullahnejad's coach, while deeply saddened by the martyrdom of his student, says about Mehdi Abdullahnejad: "Mehdi was a hero. He started wrestling under my supervision at the age of six. From his childhood, he was smarter than others and more interested in this sport.

He always followed the fights of great wrestlers such as Hassan Yazdani, Amir Hossein Zare, and Rahman Amozad on television and performed their techniques in the best possible way. He never gave up on his dreams, and one of his biggest goals was to be on the national team. In the year when he was getting close to achieving all his goals, he was martyred by the enemy, completely destroying his dream of becoming a champion. A few days ago, he gave his passport to the federation and was supposed to go to the world championship with the national beach wrestling team.”

Mehdi’s coach, Abdollahnajed, continues: “The night before the incident, Mehdi came to the club and was upset about the wrestling match he had with one of the athletes and in which he had lost. I asked him to explain that wrestling match to me. After his explanation, I taught him a new technique. Mehdi repeated and reviewed that technique tirelessly for about forty minutes and promised that he would knock his opponent out with the same technique in the next match. That night, after saying goodbye, he went to his parents’ house. The next day, they told him that Mehdi was injured and hospitalized, but I later learned that he had been martyred. Apparently, he had gone out shopping with his brother Mahmoud in the morning, and when he returned, Mahmoud suggested that they go to his workplace.

The moment they arrived and got out of the car, a missile hit a nearby building and Mehdi was buried under the rubble. His brother was also thrown back by the blast wave and shrapnel tore off his leg. By the time they were able to pull Mehdi out of the rubble, he had surrendered his life to Janafrin. Believe me, our young wrestler was one of the best. I still can’t believe he’s gone.”

Akbar Lotfi continues to explain: “Mehdi’s older brother was also a wrestler, but after he got married, he didn’t come to wrestling much. Mehdi’s younger brother is now training under my supervision. Believe me, every time he goes on the mat, I feel like Mehdi is wrestling.

I hope he can fill his brother’s void and one day I will see him on the national championship podium and in the national team uniform so that he can fulfill his brother’s dream. By winning the bronze medal in the national youth championship, Mehdi had also earned a license to participate in the Abdullah Movahed and Takhti Cup and was scheduled to participate in the qualifying tournaments. With his talent, I was sure that he could wear the national freestyle wrestling team jersey.”

Akbar Lotfi concluded, with tears in his eyes and while referring to Mehdi as his son, he said: “I hope that the youth of this country, like Mehdi, will have great dreams for Iran and will be able to create great days for our beloved homeland. From here, I want to send a message to Mehdi that his place among us will always be empty.”

این ورزشکار جوان که دی‌ماه گذشته در رقابت‌های قهرمانی کشور در رشته کشتی آزاد جوانان و در وزن ۷۹ کیلوگرم موفق به کسب مدال برنز شده بود در اوج جوانی و آرزوهای بزرگ به شهادت رسید تا حالا جای خالی او روی تشک کشتی خودنمایی کند.

اکبر لطفی، مربی مهدی عبدالله‌نژاد در حالی که به‌شدت بابت شهادت شاگردش ناراحت است درباره مهدی عبدالله نژاد  می گوید: «مهدی یک قهرمان بود. از شش‌سالگی زیر نظر من کشتی را آغاز کرد. از همان کودکی نسبت به دیگران باهوش‌تر و به این رشته علاقه‌مندتر بود.

همیشه مبارزه‌های کشتی‌گیران بزرگی چون حسن یزدانی، امیرحسین زارع و رحمان عموزاد را از تلویزیون دنبال می‌کرد و فنون آنها را به بهترین شکل ممکن اجرا می‌نمود. هیچ‌گاه از آرزوهایش دست نمی‌کشید و یکی از بزرگ‌ترین اهدافش حضور در تیم ملی بود. در سالی که داشت به تمامی خواسته‌هایش نزدیک می‌شد،توسط دشمن متجاوز به شهادت رسید تا رویای قهرمانی‌اش به کلی از بین برود.او چند روز قبل پاسپورتش را به فدراسیون داد و قرار بود به همراه تیم ملی کشتی ساحلی راهی مسابقات قهرمانی جهان شود.»

مربی مهدی عبدالله نژاد در ادامه می‌گوید:«شب پیش از حادثه، مهدی به باشگاه آمد و از کشتی‌ای که با یکی از ورزشکاران گرفته و در آن مغلوب شده بود، ناراحت بود. از او خواستم آن کشتی را برایم شرح دهد. پس از توضیحاتش، یک فن جدید به او آموزش دادم. مهدی حدود چهل دقیقه بدون خستگی آن فن را تکرار و مرور کرد و قول داد که در مسابقه بعدی حریفش را با همان فن به خاک خواهد انداخت. آن شب پس از خداحافظی راهی منزل پدر و مادرش شد. فردای آن روز خبر آوردند که مهدی زخمی و در بیمارستان بستری است، اما بعداً فهمیدم که به شهادت رسیده است. گویا صبح به همراه برادرش محمود برای خرید بیرون رفته بود و هنگام بازگشت، محمود پیشنهاد می‌کند به محل کار او بروند.

 لحظه‌ای که رسیدند و از ماشین پیاده شدند، موشک به یکی از ساختمان‌های آن حوالی اصابت کرد و مهدی زیر آوار ماند. برادرش نیز بر اثر موج انفجار به عقب پرتاب شد و ترکش‌ پای او را پاره کرد. تا زمانی که توانستند مهدی را از زیر آوار بیرون بیاورند، جان به جان‌آفرین تسلیم کرده بود. باور کنید کشتی‌گیر جوان ما یکی از بهترین‌ها بود. هنوز نمی‌توانم باور کنم که  دیگر نیست.»

اکبر لطفی در ادامه توضیح می دهد: «برادر بزرگ‌تر مهدی هم کشتی‌گیر بود، اما بعد از اینکه ازدواج کرد کمتر به سراغ کشتی می آمد. برادر کوچک‌تر مهدی هم اکنون زیر نظر من تمرین می‌کند. باور کنید هر وقت او به روی تشک می‌رود، احساس می‌کنم مهدی دارد کشتی می‌گیرد.

امیدوارم او بتواند جای خالی برادرش را پر کند و روزی او را بر سکوی قهرمانی کشور و در لباس تیم ملی ببینم تا بتواند آرزوی برادرش را برآورده کند. مهدی با کسب مدال برنز قهرمانی جوانان کشور، جواز حضور در جام عبدالله موحد و تختی را نیز به دست آورده بود و قرار بود در مسابقات انتخابی شرکت کند. با استعدادی که داشت، مطمئن بودم که می‌تواند پیراهن تیم ملی کشتی آزاد را بر تن کند.»

اکبر لطفی در پایان، با چشمانی اشکبار و در حالی که از مهدی به عنوان فرزند خود یاد می‌کرد، گفت: «امیدوارم جوانان این کشور همانند مهدی آرزوهای بزرگ برای ایران داشته باشند و بتوانند روزهای بزرگی را برای میهن عزیزمان رقم بزنند. از اینجا می‌خواهم برای مهدی پیغام بفرستم که جای او در بین ما همیشه خالی  است.»
