“The essence of childhood has been destroyed”: Israel’s deliberate targeting of Palestinian children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 7 October 2023

In June 2026, the United Nations released a major report on the deliberate targeting and killing of children in Palestine by Israeli forces, both in Gaza and the West Bank.

The 94-page report details multiple forms of harm inflicted on Palestinian children, from physical harm due to explosive weapons use in residential areas, to the targeted killing of children in both Gaza and the West Bank, to the degradation of life for children living under siege. The report also details the mental harm against Palestinian children, as well as the ‘dehumanization of Palestinian childhood’ more generally. In concluding its report, the Commission stated “much of the harm suffered by Palestinian children was not incidental but intended to destroy the existence of the Palestinians in Gaza as a group”.

Airwars documentation and analysis was cited throughout the report, including our findings laid out in our ‘Patterns of Harm’ analysis where we pointed to high child casualties within the same family units. The report also cited some specific cases, including a strike on a school in December 2024, where Airwars researchers identified at least seven children were killed.
