Between six and 11 people, including up to nine civilians – counting women and children – were killed along with alleged Arab and Uzbek militants, as a US strike hit a al-Qa’ida safe house in Miram Shah, north Waziristan, local and international media reported.

The Long War Journal reported that “the US has targeted an al Qaeda safe house inside Pakistan’s tribal areas for the second day in a row. A missile strike hit a home near the town of Miramshah in the Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan.”

Like many of the other sources, the Long War Journal reported six fatalities; one woman, one child, and several unidentified “foreigners.”

AFP specified that the woman and the little girl were killed by shrapnel and that they were the wife and daughter of village school teacher Raees Khan.

However an internal FATA administration document recorded 11 people killed in all, among them nine civilians: five women, including the wife and daughter of ‘local’ Ihsanullah, and four children.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Express instead said that two women died and a child was injured.

There were reports of up to eight wounded, though their status were unclear. However, Daily Times reported six wounded civilians.

Dawn reported that the house of Nasir Dawar was damaged in the attack, while the Express named him as Sawar Khan Dawar. The News reported:

“Residents said some guests, a term generally used for foreign nationals affiliated with al-Qaeda operatives, were staying in the village but they did not know about their nationality and rank in the terror network.”

The US confirmed the strike when it secretly claimed that “two [unnamed] prominent al Qaeda paramilitary commanders’ died, with no mention of the civilian casualties. Some reports listed this strike for August 31.
