The US reportedly carried out four drone strikes in north Waziristan on January 1st, 2011. The first described in Ob181, the second described below and the subsequent two in Ob183 and Ob184.
After waiting two hours with drones still overhead, rescuers reportedly attempted to retrieve the dead and injured from Ob181 in Mandi Khel, but were attacked, local and international media reported. At least four and as many as six people were reported killed, all militants according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism’s (TBIJ) researchers in Waziristan.
And though some reports described the fatalities as “people” and thus indicating the possibility of civilian harm, a February 2012 report published by Associated Press, based on extensive interviews with locals, confirmed that no civilians were killed in this strike nor in Ob181, but instead, that a total of 14 Taliban members were killed.
Four of the dead were local men according to a secret internal tally of drone strike casualties compiled by the local political authority and published by TBIJ in January 2014.
