A US-led operation meant to capture an Islamic State official but killed an undercover Syrian agent instead

On October 18, 35-year-old Khaled Abdulaziz al-Masoud was killed in what was reported by both the Associated Press (AP) and open sources as a botched arrest carried out by the U.S. forces in coordination with the Syrian Free Army (SFA), which now reports to the new Syrian government.

Speaking with Khaled’s family members, AP reported that Humvees with U.S. flags came to the family’s home in Dumayr, broke down the door, and shot Khaled before taking him away. The family was later called to pick up Khaled’s body from the hospital, but were given no information as to when he had died.

Khaled’s mother told AP: “I want the people who took him from his children to be held accountable.”

Airwars researched the incident and found no evidence indicating that Khaled was affiliated with a militant group when he was killed. As such, he has been recorded as a civilian – a classification that AP noted in their report. Speaking with AP, Airwars’ director Emily Tripp said that Airwars has seen “multiple instances of what the U.S. call ‘mistakes.’”

As of December 2025, Airwars has recorded 52 incidents in which civilians were harmed or killed in coalition operations in Syria since 2020.
