Airwars assessment

One woman was badly injured in an airstrike on her home – and was then caught up in further airstrikes as she receieved treatment in an ISIS hospital, it was reported.

Amnesty International provided the following field report to Airwars citing an eyewitness: “A hit from a ‘Khanzira’- she described this as being an ‘F52’ – went over their house and hit the neighbors next door. 14 people were killed. She did not go out to investigate because it is dangerous as most residents know it is never one hit at a time. “We know they want to destroy Daesh but this is not how it should be. To destroy a house and kill an entire family for one person. Is this the work of humans? If they want to liberate families, don’t use airstrikes. It’s these random airstrikes that kill people. In Mosul we say Jedida is the Kobani the 2nd. It’s all gone.”

Airstrikes from the Khanzira continued on the Sinaa area in front of their house. The front of the house was hit when she was in the courtyard sitting down. It had also hit the small kiosk-type sotarge in front of their house where her sons kept metal scraps and spare parts they sold (in the sinaa). The front walls of the courtyard fell in and XX turned to her children to help “I tried to get up but my left leg was dangling under me. I looked down and saw it covered in blood. The children started screaming, but they couldn’t take me anywhere.” The wound was held with towels at home until her son went out and got the attention of one of the IS fighters.

She was taken to the al-Limhouri hospital’s emergency wing by IS fighters in their car. Her husband and son accompanied her. She was in the hospital for 5 hours, being given first aid and prepared for operation to remove a piece of metal (infilaq) roughly 10 cm long from her lower left leg. Before entering the operation, airstrikes begun on the hospital and in the room she was in, the roof fell in. she was moved to the corridor with the rest of the patients. “They blared out on speaker and people rushing in and out that the hospital needs to be emptied. I couldn’t move so they kept me in the corridor with other patients.” Her husband was with her. “the strikes carried on for 3 hours and sometime there were mortars. Then they [IS] made us clear the hospital. My husband took me home in a KIA (open back small truck for transferring goods). Every meter we crossed was met with airstrikes and mortarts. I thought we’d never make it home but god was watching us.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

According to an unidentified international news agency cited in Foreign Policy, there were unconfirmed reports of possible civilian casualties at Mosul after coalition aircraft heavily targeted the city – though the agency was unable to verify further given the security situation: “We were never able to confirm it.”

Perhaps linked to the above, CENTCOM noted internally that it had received reports from an unnamed journalist on October 17th that “there may have been CIVCAS on a strike conducted on several vehicles in Mosul.”

Investigators concluded that the allegation might be linked to a confirmed strike by an unspecified Coalition Task Force that day. However, based on operational reports and “no reports of alleged CIVCAS arising from this strike” it was subsequently decided that “No further inquiry required.”

According to a reporter for Rudaw still in the city (who made no mention of civilian casualties) the coalition airstrikes began at 8pm local time: “The bombing targeted the strongholds of the organization Daesh, one of them the police culture center in Alnarkal neighborhood east of the city of Mosul, while missiles also targeted a gathering of militants near University Bridge Tunnel in the cultural district of the town.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Following the New York Times Magazine’s Uncounted investigation, the Coalition later confirmed the injury of a civilian in an event in Shora, a village near Qayyarah, Iraq.

According to reporters Azmat Khan and Anand Ghopal, “Mohammad Mansour Abdullah’s house was next to the home of an Army Officer who fled Shora when ISIS took over. An ISIS member named Omar Hussain Faraj moved into the empty Army Officer’s house, which had a generator and a big fan, and used the house to make mortars. Mohammad Mansour Abdullah—fearful of becoming collateral damage—moved into another house elsewhere in Shora, but his brother’s family stayed in their house next-door-since they were not directly next to the ISIS house.

“On October 13, 2016, there was an airstrike on the home of Mohammad Mansour Abdullah. The airstrike did not hit the ISIS house; Instead, it only hit the home of Mohammad Mansour Abdullah. His nephew Hassan Ahmed Mansour was injured on his arm.”

The Coalition’s September 2019 civilian casualty report noted: “Coalition aircraft conducted an airstrike against a Daesh facility. Regrettably, one civilian was unintentionally wounded as a result of the strike.”

The Coalition provided Airwars with the location for this incident, accurate to within a 100 metre box.

Airwars assessment

A civilian was reportedly killed in alleged US-led Coalition or Turkish drone strikes on the road between Idlib city and Binnish, Idlib governorate, on June 24th, 2020, according to local sources.

The Syrian Civil Defence in Idlib told Smart New Agency that “an ammunition drone had targeted a Santa Fe car with missiles and destroyed it completely, indicating the death of an unidentified person inside.” The SCD added that another unidentified person, thought to be a civilian, was killed as he was riding his motorbike in the vicinity of the explosion. SCD teams worked to extinguish the fire and collected the human remains.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, “a civilian on a motorcycle was killed near the site where a drone targeted a military vehicle driven by a commander in the Ethbatu operations room on the road between Idlib and Binish. The attack killed the commander instantly.”

While the SOHR initially reported that the US-Coalition had likely been responsible, it later wrote that “sources suggested that the drone that targeted the commander was Turkish, while a Coalition drone was flying over Idlib coinciding with the attack.”

Smart News Agency and @HoseenAdnan reported that the killed militant was Abu Adnan Al Homsi from the Al Qaida linked group Hurras Al Din.

In the third of their September 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

At least one man was killed and another was arrested during a joint airdrop operation carried out by the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Coalition on March 28, 2022. Sources were conflicted as to whether the man killed was a militant or a civilian.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by the Coalition forces and helicopters carried out a raid at a house of a suspected ISIS member in Al-Litwah neighbourhood in Thiban city. After refusing to surrender, the man was killed and his house was blown up. Al Khabour identified the name of the man to be 35 year old Abdul Salem Al-Abo.

According to Euphrates Post, the SDF asked the man to surrender over loudspeakers after they had surrounded him and he was hit by helicopter fire after he tried to flee, which resulted in his death. The source also pinpointed his house as being near the al-Rudaini Mosque and added that his house was blown up with explosive devices by the SDF after his family was evacuated.

Local media @YusufAd76532779 tweeted that Abdul Salem Al-Abo’s father was arrested during the operation and that Abdul “returned from Turkey about five months ago and settled in the town of “Theban” and smuggled oil from the areas controlled by the PKK/PYD militia to the areas controlled by the Assad militia west of the Euphrates River (Shamiya)”.

Tweets from @NourYoussef111 and @WestAsia21, in addition to reporting from regime-controlled Syrian Arab News Agency, referred to a civilian being killed during the operation but it is unclear if they are referring to Abdul.

All of the sources that reported on the incident referred to the operation as being a joint operation between the SDF and the Coalition, with Euphrates Post specifying that the operation was carried out by a helicopter belonging to the International Coalition forces accompanied by a drone and a ground force from the SDF on the ground.

The incident occured at 01:00:00 local time.
