Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: December 15, 2024

On Tuesday, October 24th, 2023, an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the Abu Dalal al-Nuseirat Mall and a house next to it in the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip, reportedly killing at least 21 civilians and injuring at least 80 more, according to multiple sources.

@ShehabAgency initially reported on “10 martyrs and a large number of wounded” as a result of an Israeli airstrike on “a house for the Abu Dalal family in the Nuseirat market”. Through social media posts, Airwars was able to identify the names of 19 individuals (and other demographic details of two others) killed in the attack of Nuseirat market. Among those killed were Rami Abu Zarqa, his pregnant wife Suha Hisham Abu Dalal, and their two children (unnamed). Rami and Suha’s infant niece and nephew, Saadia Ammar al-Banna and Hisham Ammar al-Banna, along with Suha’s sister-in-law, Israa Suhail Abu Dalal, and Israa’s sons, 12-year old Mahmoud Ahmed Abu Dalal and 4-year old Arkan Ahmed Abu Dalal, as well as 11-year old Mays Iyad Abu Dalal and Bassem Montaser Abu Dalal.

Killed along with them were Mays Abu Abdo, 28-year old Hossam Akram Salama, Muhammad al-Arouqi, and 50-year old Ziad Khaled Omar al-Hamarneh Abu Yazan, the owner of al-Majd Pharmacy. 30-year old Muhammad Hassan al-Sabakhi was killed with his son, 5-year old Ibrahim Muhammad al-Sabakhi. Adam al-Helou and his nephew Saeed Ashraf al-Helou were killed, as were 30-year old bank worker Obaida Mazen al-Nakhalah and 51-year old Iyad Salama al-Ajla. Ahmed Rizq Hamad and his brother, Dr. Mahmoud Rizq Hamad, suffered injuries. No further details were available regarding the identity or current conditions of the victims.

Al Awda Health and Community Association received five of those killed and 80 of those injured, and at least 10 of the 80 patients required transfer to al-Aqsa Hospital as the emergency room reached full capacity, as depicted in the images.

On X, user @walaasaada shared a video portraying bystanders carrying a wounded individual inside a taxi, presumably on their way to a hospital, while @PalPostN uploaded a video depicting visibly upset relatives bidding farewell to a child that died as a result of the bombardment. @SafaPs and @mohammed_jbour also shared pictures documenting the rescue and recovery efforts. At the time of user Mahmoud Sufyan’s last update on the situation, there were still “a number of missing people under the rubble.”

On Facebook, Sanaa Mahmoud, Abu Osama Aljazaairi Almorabet, Mohammad Ismail al-Hour, Adam Nawas, Hossam Youssef, Abu Jameel al-ashqar and Khaleel Alghaffari shared images and video compilations documenting the immediate aftermath of the strike, illustrating its destructive impact on the infrastructure where citizens “bought their household supplies,” according to Emad J. Abushawiesh. Their posts captured moments of chaos and human suffering, including one of a dazed man–possibly the injured Dr. Mahmoud Hamad– stumbling outside of a hospital, covered in dust and blood, and other scenes of children being rescued from under the rubble and hurriedly transported to ambulances bound for al-Awda Hospital in al-Nuseirat.  Ibrahem Elian reported that some of the casualties sustained “serious injuries” necessitating “amputations.” Additionally, Jenine News reported that the airstrike targeted a commercial complex housing a humanitarian aid distribution point, as well as “large numbers” of shoppers and displaced individuals.

Condolence messages, alongside several pictures honouring the victims, were shared by numerous relatives and acquaintances. Among them were Ziad Khaled Omar al-Hamarneh’s relatives, Khaled Hamarna and Mahmoud al-Mashharawi Abu Fadi. The Al-Nuseirat Camp Page bid farewell to Ziad, remembering him as “their righteous son.”

Muhammad al-Sabakhi’s cousins, Mahmoud Frezano and Anas Adnan al-Sabakhi, and Iyad Salama al-Ajla’s family also expressed their grief on social media.

Additionally, Ibrahim al-Sabakhi’s grandfather, Khaleel Ibrahim, Adam al-Helou’s brother-in-law, Iyad Abu Ahmad, and Muhammad al-Arouqi’s acquaintance, Khaleel al Ghaffari, expressed their condolences. Others who contributed included Adam al-Helou’s friend Abdelrahman Naser Eid, and Israa Suhail Abu Dalal’s “beloved” brother Muhannad Abu Dalal. Muhammad Hassan al-Sabakhi’s niece, Nour Sabakhi, and Hossam Akram Salama’s cousins, Abu Mohammad and Nadal Salame, joined in expressing their sorrow.

Colleagues of Obaida al-Nakhalah at the Palestine Islamic Bank, Wafaa Odeh, Deyaa Zarifah, Mahmoud Abu Safa, and Bara’ Refai, shared memories of Obaida and described him as “young and decent”, “beloved”, and possessing “high morals.” Additionally, Obaida’s cousins, Abeer Alnakhala and Abdallah Ghazali, and his friends Hasan Elrayer and Mohammad Ashour Abu Albaraa, reminisced about his kindness. Multiple photos were shared by his colleagues, including one where he is cutting a birthday cake at his office.

Nabeel Abu Nafez and Maysoon Diab Awd mourned the workers of Abu Dalal Mall, highlighting their smiles and good humour. Abu Jameel al-Ashqar wished for the speedy recovery of his friend, “the respected and decent neighbour” Ahmed Rizq Hamad, and his brother, Dr. Mahmoud. Lastly, Al Nuseirat Joint Primary School extended their condolences to Saadia and Hisham al-Banna’s family, acknowledging their “cheerful students” too.

Mourners also acknowledged the solace the Abu Dalal Mall had afforded them. Facebook user Maysoon diab awd commented that “the mall that was a space and psychological comfort to me is all gone.”

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.
