Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: July 23, 2025

On October 25th 2023, an alleged Israeli airstrike reportedly hit a house where the Al-Dahdouh family were taking refuge, in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in Central Gaza, killing at least 13 named family members of Wael Al-Dahdouh, bureau chief for Al-Jazeera in Gaza, including nine children. At least five other family members sustained injuries in the strike. The family had moved following the Israeli military’s instruction on October 13th to move south for safety.

Al Jazeera News reported that Wael Al-Dahdouh had been covering the on-going conflict from the Al Jazeera office and that Wael was surprised when he heard that Israeli attacks had taken place in the area his family were taking shelter in, as this area had been deemed safe by the Israeli Military. The family had been evacuated from the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood in the Northern Gaza Strip.

Wael Al-Dahdouh’s wife, Amna Shaaban Ibrahim Al-Dahdouh (44) was reportedly killed, alongside their son, Mahmoud Wael Hamdan Al-Dahdouh (16) and daughter, Sham Wael Hamdan Al-Dahdouh (6), as well as their grandson, Adam Magdy Jaber Al-Dahdouh (45 days).

According to an Al Jazeera news report, Wael Al-Dahdouh’s other children Sondos Al-Dahdouh (Adam’s mother), Kholoud Al-Dahdouh, Batoul Al-Dahdouh and Yehya Al-Dahdouh all sustained injuries but survived the airstrike, and were being treated at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Hanan Al-Dahdouh, Wael’s 81-year-old mother in law, suffered injuries to her hands and face.

Siblings who were the daughter and son of Wael’s cousin, Ayman Al-Dahdouh (20) and Hadeer Al-Dahdouh (30) were both killed, along with Hadeer’s children Mayar Muhammed Amin Al-Dahdouh (9), Malak Muhammed Amin Al-Dahdouh (6), Mays Muhammed Amin Al-Dahdouh (4), and Majd Muhammed Amin Al-Dahdouh (1). In addition Amna Shaaban Jaber Al-Dahdouh, Lian Shaaban Ibrahim Al-Dahdouh, and Nidaa Shaaban Ibrahim Al-Dahdouh were also killed.

In a tweet by @iirodeØ posted to X/Twitter, it was reported that Wael Al-Dahdouh’s ‘wife, daughter and son were martyred in one moment’.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent said that there were more than 100 people in the building which was struck, including a large number of members of the Dahdouh family. The Guardian reported that the Health Ministry put the total death toll at 21 people. In a post to Facebook by Al Jazeera Palestine, it is also claimed that, alongside the Al-Dahdouh family, the airstrike also impacted members of the Awad family.

During an Al Jazeera Egypt news report, reporter Hisham Zaquot narrated as footage of Wael Al-Dahdouh walking through the Al-Asqa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al Balah to find his family members was broadcast.

In a video posted to Facebook by Al Jazeera Palestine, Wael Al-Dahdouh can be seen crouched behind the body of his deceased son, Mahmoud, according to the video’s caption. The Qatari Al Jazeera network also broadcast images of Wael saying farewell to his son with a number of citizens gathered around him, offering their condolences.

The Twitter account @wael333444 shared that Mahmoud Wael Hamdan Al-Dahdouh aspired to be a prominent journalist, like his father. PBS News reported that as Wael Al-Dahdouh wept over the death of Mahmoud, he said “You wanted to be a journalist”. Mahmoud studied at the American International High Street in Gaza, and according to his father, spent his spare time recording and editing video clips. In a video filmed by Mahmoud with his sister Kholoud and shared on Youtube, Mahmoud exclaimed that “This is the fiercest and most violent war we have ever lived in Gaza”. Both siblings stare straight into the camera to say “Help us to stay alive.”

On the day of the incident, Mahmoud Hassan Al-Misrati shared a post on his Facebook account of watching Wael Al-Dahdouh broadcast live from a separate raid in the Gaza Strip moments before discovering the fate of his family, detailing that Wael suddenly cut off from the broadcaster. His voice, however, remained clear and he could be heard talking on the phone saying “Who is who?”.

A post from Reham Abu Allan stated that 45-day old Adam Magdy Jaber Al-Dahdouh was the only child of his parents, and that his parents had been trying for four years to have children.

According to an Al Jazeera news report, when Wael Al-Dahdouh’s daughter, Bisan Al-Dahdouh, heard that there had been an airstrike in the area where her family was sheltering, she headed to the Al-Asqa Martyrs Hospital. She recounted that “The first body I saw at the hospital was Adam, my sister Sondo’s first and only son.”.

It has been reported that Amna, Wael’s wife, was preparing a meal when she was killed. Hasan Shoubaki described Amna and Wael’s relationship: “I have never seen a man as affectionate and close to his wife as Wael, and his dearest Umm Hamza was a homeland and a world filled with peace and affection. During his time in the operating room of the hospital in Amman, his lifelong companion did not stop praying for him.”

According to a post from Hasan Shoubaki, four of Amna’s brothers had been killed by Israeli forces in years past, while Wael has lost two of his brothers to Israeli missiles in the past decade.

Al Jazeera spoke with Ali Dahdouh, Amna’s brother, who said “Amna was my only and youngest sister. We are nine brothers and one sister. We live next to each other in Tal al-Hawa, southwest of Gaza City, and we all evacuated to Nurseirat after the Israeli orders. I used to have breakfast with Amna and her husband, Wael, every Friday. Our relationship was very strong.” Ali was not home when the attack occurred, and told Al Jazeera that his injured mother Hanan was unconscious and not yet aware that her daughter died, and that “My mother is very attached to her. It’s a big catastrophe.”

Fares Ghannam posted a condolence message to his “childhood friend” Ayman, along with a picture of him smiling at the camera. Samah Dahdouh, sibling to Ayman and Hadeer, had returned home to Tal al-Hawa just a day before her family was killed. She told Al Jazeera that “They were all gathered at home, and now they’re all gone, my sister and all her children. I was on the verge of losing my mind. I couldn’t make it to the hospital from Gaza to Deir el-Balah at night. I arrived this morning. I couldn’t bid them farewell.” According to Samah, Ayman was engaged and was preparing for marriage when he was killed.

Describing Wael as a colleague as well as offering his condolences, the account Documentaries2000 posted to Facebook a video compilation of Wael emotionally mourning a deceased young man and a deceased child. When mourning the young man, he is accompanied by a teenage boy who has sustained a head injury.

According to CNN, the Israeli military has confirmed that they carried out a strike in the area, saying that they had targeted “the infrastructure of the Hamas movement” and @amanpour provided the same information during an on-air segment. However, “CNN cannot independently confirm the source of the blast at the house”.

Published On 25/10/2023 | Last updated: 22:35 (Mecca Time) Several members of the family of Al Jazeera correspondent Wael al-Dahdouh in Gaza – including his wife, son, and daughter – were killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house they had taken refuge in in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. Al-Dahdouh was known for his meticulous coverage of the Israeli bombardment and the numerous massacres committed during its ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, conveying the extent of the destruction and the clear targeting of unarmed civilians in the Strip. He was covering the continuous Israeli airstrikes from Al Jazeera's Gaza office when he was surprised by an attack on the area where his family had sought shelter in southern Wadi Gaza, one of the areas to which the occupation forces had ordered residents to move. Al-Dahdouh's family had sought refuge in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip after he realized he could not attend to them amidst the relentless bombardment and his tireless work covering the aggression. The occupation had ordered Palestinians in the Strip to move south to avoid the bombing, but the Israeli airstrikes followed them there, repeatedly confirming that there is no There is no safe place in the Gaza Strip. My colleague, Al-Dahdouh, said, "It's clear that the targeting of children, women, and civilians continues. I spoke about the Israeli airstrikes that targeted all areas, including Nuseirat. We had some doubts that the Israeli occupation would leave these people unpunished, and unfortunately, that's what happened. This is the area that the 'moral' occupation claimed was safe." He added, "The Israeli bombing targeted my family in an area far from northern Gaza, which the occupation army ordered to be evacuated." He continued, "They are taking revenge on us through our children. Our tears are tears of humanity, not tears of cowardice and collapse. Shame on the occupation army." For his part, the Al Jazeera correspondent said that there were more than 100 people in the targeted building, including a large number of members of the Al-Dahdouh family. The correspondent added that the Israeli bombing targeted the Al-Dahdouh and Awad families, noting that a number of family members are still missing.

There is no power nor strength except with God. The wife and children of journalist Wael al-Dahdouh, a correspondent for Al Jazeera, were martyred when Israeli warplanes bombed his family's home in the central Gaza Strip. Wael al-Dahdouh was just now on air reporting the truth about the Zionist entity's massacres and their bombing of homes. Minutes later, he discovered that his own home had been bombed, and that his wife, son, daughter, and several other family members and relatives had been martyred. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

This is Wael al-Dahdouh, Al Jazeera's correspondent. I swear to God, I was watching him live on air, covering an airstrike in Gaza, when suddenly the broadcast cut out. But his voice was clearly audible from afar, talking on the phone, saying "Who's there?" Then the anchor switched to a correspondent in southern Lebanon, thinking there was a technical problem with the Gaza broadcast. Later came the news of the death of his daughter, son, wife, and the rest of his family in a bombing of his home in Gaza. All day he covered the event, his camera following the victims' families at al-Shifa Hospital to convey their suffering to viewers as they searched for their loved ones and clutched the remains of their children. Today, the camera follows him as he searches for his family and clutches the remains of his children. A true tragedy in every sense of the word. There is no power nor strength except with God.

He was with us in Amman, along with his life partner, a week before this horrific aggression. He stayed for 25 days, during which he underwent surgery and numerous medical checkups. The first picture shows an unmistakable joy. At sunset under the Madaba sky on Mount Nebo in late September, Sister Amina Al-Dahdouh, "Umm Hamza," felt a surge of happiness as the distant horizon carried the breezes of Palestine—breezes denied to the people of Gaza, who are not allowed to enter their homeland, from which they were displaced by an injustice that continues to this day. Palestine dwells within them, wherever they may be, and despair finds no place in their hearts, even though Umm Hamza carries the heavy memory of four of her brothers being martyred during an Israeli aggression years ago, while Abu Hamza bid farewell to two of his brothers in the past decade, martyred by the treacherous missiles of the occupation. I have never seen a man as tender and close to his wife as Wael. His beloved Umm Hamza was a world unto herself, a haven of peace and affection. During his time in the operating room at the hospital in Amman, his life partner never ceased praying for him. It was as if they had just met, such was their devotion, love, and tenderness. I pray to the Almighty that He accepts our martyred sister Umm Hamza, her martyred son Mahmoud, and her martyred little girl Sham into the highest Paradise. May He grant patience and solace to my brother and friend Wael Al-Dahdouh, so that he may remain as I have always known him: patient, faithful, and steadfast. He is one of the greatest journalists who have borne the burden of documenting the Palestinian tragedy in a world overflowing with injustice, Zionism, and ugliness. Mahmoud Wael Al-Dahdouh wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, the renowned reporter Wael Al-Dahdouh. He spoke English well. At the start of the war, the martyr, along with his sister, began recording videos and posting them on social media to show the world the devastating effects of the Israeli bombings. As his father continued his courageous coverage of events from the heart of Gaza, the enemy warplanes bombed the family home, and the hero Mahmoud Al-Dahdouh, his sister, his mother, and some other family members were martyred. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — More than 3,600 Palestinian children were killed in the first 25 days of the war between Israel and Hamas, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run Health Ministry. They were hit by airstrikes, smashed by misfired rockets, burned by blasts and crushed by buildings, and among them were newborns and toddlers, avid readers, aspiring journalists and boys who thought they’d be safe in a church. Nearly half of the crowded strip’s 2.3 million inhabitants are under 18, and children account for 40% of those killed so far in the war. An Associated Press analysis of Gaza Health Ministry data released last week showed that as of Oct. 26, 2,001 children ages 12 and under had been killed, including 615 who were 3 or younger. “When houses are destroyed, they collapse on the heads of children,” writer Adam al-Madhoun said Wednesday as he comforted his 4-year-old daughter Kenzi at the Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah. She survived an airstrike that ripped off her right arm, crushed her left leg and fractured her skull. WATCH: Some civilians trapped in Gaza allowed to cross into Egypt as Israeli airstrikes continue Israel says its airstrikes target Hamas militant sites and infrastructure, and it accuses the group of using civilians as human shields. It also says more than 500 militant rockets have misfired and landed in Gaza, killing an unknown number of Palestinians. More children have been killed in just over three weeks in Gaza than in all of the world’s conflicts combined in each of the past three years, according to the global charity Save the Children. For example, it said, 2,985 children were killed across two dozen war zones throughout all of last year. “Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of children,” said James Elder, a spokesperson for UNICEF, the U.N. children’s agency. Images and footage of shell-shocked children being pulled from rubble in Gaza or writhing on dirty hospital gurneys have become commonplace and have fueled protests around the world. Scenes from recent airstrikes included a rescuer cradling a limp toddler in a bloodied white tutu, a bespectacled father shrieking as he clutched his dead child tight to his chest, and a dazed young boy covered in blood and dust staggering alone through the ruins. “It’s a curse to be a parent in Gaza,” said Ahmed Modawikh, a 40-year-old carpenter from Gaza City whose life was shattered by the death of his 8-year-old daughter during five days of fighting in May. Israeli children have also been killed. During Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 rampage across southern Israel that sparked the war, its gunmen killed more than 1,400 people. Among them were babies and other small children, Israeli officials have said, though they haven’t provided exact figures. About 30 children were also among the roughly 240 hostages Hamas took. As Israeli warplanes pound Gaza, Palestinian children huddle with large families in apartments or U.N.-run shelters. Although Israel has urged Palestinians to leave northern Gaza for the strip’s south, nowhere in the territory has proven safe from its airstrikes. “People are running from death only to find death,” said Yasmine Jouda, who lost 68 family members in Oct. 22 airstrikes that razed two four-story buildings in Deir al-Balah, where they had sought refuge from northern Gaza. The strike’s only survivor was Jouda’s year-old niece Milissa, whose mother had gone into labor during the attack and was found dead beneath the rubble, the heads of her lifeless twin newborns emerging from her birth canal. “What did this tiny baby do to deserve a life without any family?” Jouda said. Israel blames Hamas for Gaza’s death toll — now more than 8,800, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry — because the militant group operates from jam-packed residential neighborhoods. Palestinians point to the soaring casualty count as proof that Israeli strikes are indiscriminate and disproportionate. The war has injured more than 7,000 Palestinian children and left many with lifechanging problems, doctors say. Just before the war, Jouda’s niece Milissa walked a few paces for the first time. She will never walk again. Doctors say the airstrike that killed the girl’s family fractured her spine and paralyzed her from the chest down. Just down the hall from her in the teeming central Gaza hospital, 4-year-old Kenzi woke up screaming, asking what had happened to her missing right arm. “It will take so much care and work just to get her to the point of having half a normal life,” her father said. Even those physically unscathed may be scarred by war’s ravages. For 15-year-olds in Gaza, it’s their fifth Israel-Hamas war since the militant group seized control of the enclave in 2007. All they’ve known is life under a punishing Israeli-Egyptian blockade that prevents them from traveling abroad and crushes their hopes for the future. The strip has a 70% youth unemployment rate, according to the World Bank. “There is no hope for these children to develop careers, improve their standard of living, access better healthcare and education,” said Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director for Defense for Children International in the Palestinian territories. But in this war, he added, “it’s about life and death.” And in Gaza, death is everywhere. Here are just a few of the 3,648 Palestinian children and minors who have been killed in the war. Aseel Hassan, 13 Aseel Hassan was an excellent student, said her father, Hazem Bin Saeed. She devoured classical Arabic poetry, memorizing its rigid metric and rhyme scheme, and reveling in its mystical images and florid metaphors. During the war, when Israeli bombardments came so close that their walls shook, she would regale her relatives by reciting famous verses from Abu Al Tayyib al-Mutanabbi, a 10th-century Iraqi poet, her father said. “When I asked her what she wanted to do when she grew up, she would say, read,” said 42-year-old Bin Saeed. “Poems were Aseel’s escape.” An airstrike on Oct. 19 leveled his three-story home in Deir al-Balah, killing Aseel and her 14-year-old brother, Anas. Majd Souri, 7 The explosions terrified Majd, said his father, 45-year-old Ramez Souri. He missed playing soccer with his school friends. He was devastated that the war had canceled his Christian family’s much-anticipated trip to Nazareth, the town in Israel where tradition says Jesus grew up. “Baba, where can we go?” Majd asked again and again when airstrikes roared. The family, devout members of Gaza’s tiny Christian community, finally had an answer — St. Porphyrius Greek Orthodox Church in Gaza City. Souri said Majd calmed down when they arrived at the church, where dozens of Christian families had taken shelter. Together, they prayed and sang. On Oct. 20, shrapnel crashed into the monastery, killing 18 people. Among the dead were Majd and his siblings, 9-year-old Julie and 15-year-old Soheil. Israel says it had been targeting a nearby Hamas command center. Majd was found beneath the rubble with his hands around his mother’s neck. His face was completely burned. “My children just wanted peace and stability,” said Souri, his voice cracking. “All I cared about was that they were happy.” Kenan and Neman al-Sharif, 18 months Karam al-Sharif, an employee with the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency, could barely speak Wednesday as he knelt over his children’s small shrouded bodies at the hospital. Gone were his daughters, 5-year-old Joud and 10-year-old Tasnim. Also gone were his twin 18-month-old sons, Kenan and Neman. Al-Sharif sobbed as he hugged Kenan and said goodbye. Neman’s body was still lost beneath the rubble of the six-story tower where the family had sought refuge in the Nuseirat refugee camp, in central Gaza. “They had no time here,” Sami Abu Sultan, al-Sharif’s brother, said of the baby boys, a day after the building was destroyed. “It was God’s will.” Mahmoud Dahdouh, 16 On Oct. 25, Al Jazeera’s livestream caught the chilling moment when its Gaza bureau chief, Wael Dahdouh, discovered that an Israeli airstrike had killed his wife, 6-year-old daughter, infant grandson and 16-year-old son, Mahmoud. Swarmed by TV cameras at the hospital, Dahdouh wept over his teenage son, murmuring, “You wanted to be a journalist.” Mahmoud was a senior at the secular American International High School in Gaza City. Set on becoming an English-language reporter, he spent his time honing camera skills and posting amateur reporting clips on YouTube, Dahdouh said. A video that Mahmoud filmed days before he died showed charred cars, dark smoke and flattened homes. He and his sister, Kholoud, took turns delivering a monologue, straining to be heard over the wind. “This is the fiercest and most violent war we have lived in Gaza,” Mahmoud said, chopping the air with his hands. At the end of the clip, the siblings stared straight into the camera. “Help us to stay alive,” they said in unison. DeBre reported from Jerusalem. An Al Jazeera correspondent is mourning the loss of his entire immediate family after they were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza. The family of Wael al-Dahdouh, Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Gaza, had moved to a house in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza after Israel’s warning on 13 October to those in the northern half of the territory to leave.Dahdouh’s wife, son, daughter and grandson were killed in the airstrike late on Tuesday, amid an overnight surge in Israeli attacks that the Hamas-run health ministry said had killed hundreds of people. In a statement, Al Jazeera said: “Their home was targeted in the Nuseirat camp in the centre of Gaza, where they had sought refuge after being displaced by the initial bombardment in their neighbourhood, following Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu’s call for all civilians to move south.“The network strongly condemns the indiscriminate targeting and killing of innocent civilians in Gaza, which has led to the loss of Wael al-Dahdouh’s family and countless others.”Twenty-one other people were killed in the same airstrike, according to the health ministry.Other members of Dahdouh’s family were buried under the rubble, according to Al Jazeera.Dahdouh was helping broadcast live images of the besieged territory’s night sky when he received the news that his family members had died.Moments later, the satellite channel switched to footage of Dahdouh entering Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir al-Balah before being overcome by grief as he peered over the body of his dead son in the hospital’s morgue.“They take revenge on us in our children?” he said, kneeling over his son’s bloodied body, still wearing his protective press vest from that day’s work.Speaking to Al Jazeera on his way out of the hospital, Dahdouh said: “What happened is clear. This is a series of targeted attacks on children, women and civilians. I was just reporting from Yarmouk about such an attack, and the Israeli raids have targeted many areas, including Nuseirat.“We had our doubts that the Israeli occupation would not let these people go without punishing them. And sadly, that is what happened. This is the ‘safe’ area that the occupation army spoke of.”The video is likely to reverberate across the Arab world. The 53-year-old journalist is revered in his native Gaza for telling people’s stories of suffering and hardship to the outside world through many wars.Youmna ElSayed, a correspondent for Al Jazeera in Gaza, told the broadcaster: “It’s heartbreaking to be reporting about Wael’s family and to see how broken he is. He calms everyone. He speaks to us like a big brother, not just a bureau chief.“He didn’t leave Gaza City. He stayed despite all the threats and warnings and didn’t stop for 19 days in a row. He said: ‘I must be here in Gaza City to report about these people who are getting bombed every day.’”Dahdouh and other mourners attended the funerals on Thursday wearing the blue flak jackets used by reporters in the Palestinian territories. There was no comment from the Israeli military on the strike. It says it strikes only Hamas military targets in Gaza and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 7,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war in less than three weeks, a figure that includes the disputed toll from an explosion at a hospital. That is more than three times the number of Palestinians killed in the six-week-long Gaza war in 2014. The ministry’s toll includes more than 2,900 minors and more than 1,500 women. The victims in Gaza include more than 22 journalists, according to the Palestinian journalists’ union. The fighting has killed more than 1,400 people in Israel, mostly civilians killed during the initial Hamas attack on 7 October, according to the Israeli government. On Wednesday night, Israeli airstrikes in the southern city of Khan Younis levelled more than eight homes belonging to an extended family, killing at least 15 people. Ambulances raced to the scene as dust from the collapsing buildings hung in the air.About 1.4 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have fled their homes, with nearly half of them crowded into UN shelters. Hundreds of thousands remain in northern Gaza, despite Israel ordering them to evacuate to the south, saying those who remain might be considered “accomplices” of Hamas.Reuters contributed to this report

Deir el-Balah, Gaza Strip – When 27-year-old Bisan Dahdouh heard that an Israeli air strike had hit the central Gaza Strip area of Nuseirat where her family was sheltering, she rushed to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. She wasn’t prepared for what she would see: the body of her one-and-a-half-year-old nephew. “The first body I saw at the hospital was Adam, my sister Sondos’s first and only son,” she told Al Jazeera.Recommended Stories list of 3 itemslist 1 of 3How the US has used its veto power at the UN in support of Israellist 2 of 3Israel stages large overnight ground raid into Gaza Striplist 3 of 3Israel-Hamas war: List of key events, day 20end of listIt was only the beginning of a cascade of devastating news that would hit her and her family. Bisan is the daughter of Wael Dahdouh, the Al Jazeera bureau chief in Gaza.Wael lost his wife and Bisan her mother, 44-year-old Amna, in the Israeli bombing. Wael’s 16-year-old son, Mahmoud; his seven-year-old daughter, Sham; and his grandchild, Adam, were also killed in the attack.Eight other extended family members, including Wael’s cousin’s daughter and her four children, were also killed in the attack. In the emergency department of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, Bisan sat anxiously, awaiting updates on her injured siblings — Sondos, Kholoud, Batoul and Yehya. They all sustained injuries but survived. The Dahdouh family had recently evacuated from the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood in the northern Gaza Strip to the Nuseirat area on orders from the Israeli army instructing half of Gaza’s residents to move south.Amna was fasting when she was killed.“They had prepared a meal, but she chose to pray before breaking her fast. The bomb then struck, and everything was gone,” Bisan said before breaking into tears, overwhelmed with grief and shock.Sitting beside her was her cousin, Samah Dahdouh, who lost her 20-year-old brother, Ayman, as well as her 30-year-old sister, Hadeer, and Hadeer’s four children: Mayar, Malak, Mayess and Maid.Get instant alerts and updates based on your interests. Be the first to know when big stories happen. With tears in her eyes, 37-year-old Samah explained how she had made the decision to return home to Tal al-Hawa just a day before her family was killed. She witnessed air strikes throughout the area, prompting her to return to the north while her family remained in Nuseirat.“They were all gathered at home, and now they’re all gone, my sister and all her children,” she said as she wept.“I was on the verge of losing my mind. I couldn’t make it to the hospital from Gaza to Deir el-Balah at night. I arrived this morning. I couldn’t bid them farewell,” Samah said. She lamented the fact that Ayman, who was recently engaged and was preparing for marriage, was among the victims.‘My only sister’Among the wounded was 81-year-old Hanan Dahdouh, Wael’s mother-in-law, who suffered severe injuries to her hands and face. Her 57-year-old son, Ali Dahdouh, spoke in a low voice as he expressed his devastation.“Amna was my only and youngest sister. We are nine brothers and one sister,” he told Al Jazeera.“We live next to each other in Tal al-Hawa, southwest of Gaza City, and we all evacuated to Nurseirat after the Israeli orders,” he explained.“I used to have breakfast with Amna and her husband, Wael, every Friday,” said Ali with tears in his eyes. “Our relationship was very strong.”Ali was not home when the shelling took place but rushed to the hospital when the news broke. He explained that his mother remained unconscious and unaware of the tragedy that had befallen her family. The killing of the Dahdouh family members is no different from the reality for all the residents of Gaza, Ali said. “Everyone here is a target. No place is safe,” he noted.More than 7,000 Palestinians, including 3,000 children, have been killed since Israel launched a bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip on October 7, the day Hamas killed more than 1,400 people in attacks on southern Israel.Ali said he is worried about the moment when his mother wakes up to find that her only daughter was killed along with her children.“My mother is very attached to her. It’s a big catastrophe.”

Wael Al Dahdouh lost his wife, son, daughter, and grandson when a blast hit a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza where the family was taking shelter after being displaced, according to the news organization. Al Dahdouh thanked viewers for their messages and calls following his family’s tragedy. “The solidarity and prayers were certainly something very important for us but we thought it was necessary to return quickly despite everything,” he said. “The area is still burning, as you can see, from the raids and artillery bombardment. I saw that it was my duty, despite the pain and the bleeding wound, to return quickly and to meet you through the camera lens and social networking sites,” he added. In an on-air message on Wednesday, the Qatari-funded news network wrote that “Members of the family of our colleague Wael Al Dahdouh, including his wife, son, and daughter, were martyred in an Israeli bombing.” Al Jazeera reported Al Dahdouh’s grandson Adam was declared dead two hours later. An emotional Al Dahdouh was seen in a video crying as he stood over his son’s body, wrapped in a white sheet. The distraught journalist was also seen carrying the small body of his grandson through al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Gaza. His son Mahmoud was 15 years old, and his daughter Sham was seven years old, Al Jazeera reported. Al Jazeera anchor Abdisalam Farah announced the deaths on air, visibly struggling to keep his composure and tearing up. Twelve members of the Al Dahdouh family were killed on Wednesday, including 9 children, a statement by the family said. The Al Dahdouh family were displaced from Tal El Hawa to Nuseirat refugee camp, which they thought would be a safe place for them to stay, Al Jazeera’s office in Ramallah told CNN. CNN cannot independently confirm the source of the blast at the house, and Al Jazeera did not provide evidence linking it directly to an Israeli strike. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed to CNN that it carried out an airstrike in an area of Gaza where Al-Dahdouh’s relatives were killed on Wednesday. The IDF said that it was targeting “Hamas terrorist infrastructure.” “Strikes on military targets are subject to relevant provisions of international law, including the taking of feasible precautions to mitigate civilian casualties. Regarding this specific case, the IDF targeted Hamas terrorist infrastructure in the area,” the IDF said in a statement. Israel’s leadership has vowed to wipe out Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, in response to its October 7 deadly terror attacks and kidnap rampage in which 1,400 people, mostly civilians, were killed and more than 200 taken hostage. Its weeks-long siege on Gaza has resulted in a humanitarian crisis inside the enclave, now cut off from the world by a near-total blockade, say aid groups. Israeli airstrikes have decimated entire neighborhoods, leveling homes, schools, and mosques. CNN drone footage from Monday showed the level of destruction across parts of the strip, with whole streets flattened in the al-Rimal neighborhood in Gaza City and a row of destroyed buildings known as al-Zahra towers in central Gaza. More than 6,400 people have been killed and a further 17,000 injured in Israel’s sustained aerial bombardment of the crowded enclave, according to latest figures from the Hamas-controlled health authorities in Gaza published by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah. ‘Horrifying’ Advocacy groups condemned the death of Al Dahdouh’s family members on Wednesday. The International Press Institute (IPI) called it “horrifying and outrageous news,” in a statement. “We condemn the killing of civilians and offer our deepest condolences to Wael Dahdouh.” According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 24 journalists have died since the start of this conflict as of Wednesday. Twenty of those killed are Palestinian, three are Israeli, and one is a Lebanese journalist, CPJ said. The figure includes Palestinian journalist Roshdi Sarraj, according to Palestinian press agency WAFA, which said he was killed in an Israeli airstrike. Sarraj was a fixer at French national public radio broadcaster Radio France and had been working with its correspondents since May 2021, according to Radio France. When CNN reached out to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for comment on Sarraj’s death, it said on Monday that “in stark contrast to Hamas’ intentional attacks on Israeli men, women and children, the IDF follows international law and takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm.” CNN’s Mihir Melwani, Pierre Meilhan, Oliver Darcy and Sophie Jeong contributed to this report.
