According to the German news agency DPA, the first known civilian victims of US bombing in the campaign occurred on August 16th, eight days into the air war. According to DPA, witnesses informed the agency’s reporter that “11 civilian were killed by a US airstrike when they chased [ISIL] fighters in Sinjar but its rockets missed them, targeting civilian houses and killing 11 persons west of Mosul.”

Al Jazeera also reported that 11 non-combatants had died, adding that additional civilians may also have been killed on US strikes after August 8th: “Medical sources from the city’s hospital in Mosul said that the bodies of more than two dozen people from IS killed by US raids on northern Iraq were received.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad reported two alleged Coalition airstrikes, killing five and injuring two civilians called Mohammed Mohammed Ahmed and Ebtehalf Mohammed Yosef.

The first attack took place at 7.40 AM local time on the highway close to the town of Umm al-Dheban at that time. The second airstrike was at 8.40 AM local time on the highway close to the town of Umm Jereis. Jannie Schipper, a Dutch journalist who first broke the story, provided Airwars with details of the location and photo imagery.

The people were moving in a row of taxis from Mosul to Baghdad to flee from ISIS on 26 January 2015. Mr. Ahmed was with his mother in the first taxi and Mrs Yosef was with her husband and another couple in the second taxi. Around 7.40 AM the first taxi of the row was hit during an airstrike. Mr. Ahmed was wounded as a result. His mother and the driver did not survive the attack. After the airstrike the persons present in the second taxi provided first aid to the victims of the first taxi and they have ensured that the victims were taken to a medical facility in ISIS-held area by cars coming towards them. After the row of taxis had continued its journey, it was again hit around 8.40 by an airstrike. This time the second taxi was hit. Mrs Yosef was severely wounded as a result of this bombing. Her husband and the other couple have not survived the airstrike.

Mr. Ahmed and Mrs Yosef are presently being represented by Dutch lawyer Liesbeth Zegveld, who specializes in human rights liability.

The incident occured between 7:40 am and 8:40 am local time.

Three or four possible civilians were reported killed in an airstrike in northern Iraq, carried out by two Danish F-16s which each dropped a 500lb GBU-12 bomb. The possible error was discovered after a Danish review of cockpit video: “In some parts of the footage showing four people and a vehicle, there were acts being carried out which may be perceived as not being openly hostile.”

A joint inquiry with CENTCOM later concluded that those killed were “likely not civilian casualties” and had instead had probably been involved in planting roadside bombs.

The commander of Danish F-16s in the Middle East told Information: “It was ourselves who said, ‘I wonder if there is something here that is not as it should be?’ We wanted to get the Coalition to investigate that the intelligence basis for the operation was in order, and I am very pleased that our suspicions have been treated thoroughly and seriously, both by the Coalition and at home in Denmark.”

Denmark set a new benchmark for Coalition transparency when it publicly reported the incident just four days after the event. A statement at the time noted that “Danish forces routinely carries out an evaluation of all completed missions, with a detailed focus on specific attacks. In this context, Danish forces assessed that there is a risk that an attack may have caused civilian casualties. Danish forces have disseminated this assessment to the coalition’s air headquarters. The coalition has now launched an investigation. Danish force will review internal operating procedures in order to assess whether there is a need for change.“

No further details on the location have been given. However, citing military sources Danish state radio said that the attack took place “near Irbil.“
