Airwars assessment

At least 3 civilians were injured in an alleged Turkish drone strike killed two Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters by a petrol station near the southern entrance of Kobani at 11:55am on June 12, 2023.

The North Press quoted a medical source at the al-Amal Hospital in Kobani city who reported that 22 year old male Alaa Abdurrazaq Ibrahim had their hand amputated while sustaining injuries to their liver and kidneys, 28 year old male Khabat Adham had their legs and a hand amputated, and 25 year old male Muhammad Bahjat Ayoub fractured their jaw and as of last reporting was receiving surgery for an injury to their main artery by their jaw. The medical source emphasized that all three of the men were seriously injured.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that a total of five civilians were injured by the drone strike.

The two SDF fighters were reported to have been travelling on a motorcycle on the Kobani-Aleppo road when the strike occurred. Images shared by SOHR detail extensive damage to the motorcycle which was damaged to near unrecognition. At this time, no military has claimed the attack while all of the local sources attributed the strike to Turkish drones.

Both Hawar News and ANF identified the location of the strike as occurring on the Aleppo road at the southern entrance to Kobani, with SOHR specifying a gas station as the location.

The incident occured at 11:55:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

Khabat Adham
28 years old male injured
Alaa Abdurrazaq Ibrahim
22 years old male injured
Muhammad Bahjat Ayoub
25 years old male injured

Airwars assessment

US air support was potentially involved in an operation to retake areas of the Lower Shabelle region which killed 15 al Shabaab fighters, Radio Shabelle reported.

Colonel Mohamed Abdullahi Arale confirmed to state media that the Somali National Army had retaken Yaaqbari Weyne, MadaxMarodi and Lego villages. Colonel Arale reportedly said that his troops had killed 15 fighters during the operation and destroyed several vehicles that they were using.

According to Shabelle’s sources, the US also provided air support. However other local sources made no mention of US support at the time.

In August 2019, the Media Relations Chief for US Africa Command, John Manley, denied US involvement in the strike telling the Bureau of Investigative Journalism “We did not participate in any combined operations in this location on this day, as alleged in the article.”

Asked whether it had been responsible for this event, in February 2020 a senior AFRICOM official told Airwars that this was not the case. However, this may not preclude actions by the CIA which conducts its own undeclared strikes in Somalia.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

In the morning of October 9th 2023, an Israeli airstrike allegedly hit the Qishta family home, south of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, reportedly killing two civilians, 45 year old Faisal Mohsen Muhammad Qishta and his 25 year old daughter Nour Al-Huda Qishta.

Sources additionally reported a further 12 to 14 civilians were injured. Multiple sources, including the Palestinian Center for Human Rights and Al Mezan, reported that the strike took place without prior warning and resulted in the complete destruction of the home.

Several social media posts from family members confirmed the death of Faisal and Nour, offering words of grief for their lost loved ones. “Make your abode in paradise,” reads a post from Iman Qishta. “Oh heartache.” Several family members shared photos of Faisal. In one he is wearing a blue shirt that says “positive”, and another he is shown posing in front of a ferris wheel. “May God have mercy on you, my uncle Abu Muhammad,” reads a social media post from Mohsen Qishta. “May God have mercy on you, my cousin. Oh God, replace them with a better home than their home.”

Other photos shared by family members and the Qishta family Facebook page appear to show the aftermath of the strike, with rescue workers looking through the wreckage of the heavily damaged home and taking what appear to be bodies covered in blankets or sheets to an ambulance.

Early accounts of the strike from PBC News and a social media post from the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that 12 people were injured in the strike, and the Shehab Agency posted an image of a young girl being treated by medical professionals, with a caption stating that she was injured in the bombing of the Qishta family home in Rafah.

Later accounts from the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) and Al Mezan both stated that 14 people were injured.

The names of both Nour Qishta and Faisal have been found in the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

The location was described by sources as the Qishta neighbourhood of Rafah, likely because the family was known in the area.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

Airwars assessment

A male civilian was injured in a bombing suspected to have been carried out by the Turkish military during the night of September 5, 2023 in Al-Hawija village in Ain Issa district. A Hawar News correspondent named the injured civilian as 23 year old Khalil Ibrahim Al-Hamad who was taken to the National Hospital in Raqqa for treatment; it is unclear what injuries he sustained in the attack.

Several homes were damaged in the attack. Images shared by Hogir Necar were taken during the night with reduced visibility but show the resulting damage in three different locations, including a hole in an external residential building the size of a doorway, and rubble scattered on the street from another location damaged by the bombing. Hawar News discussed this bombing attack alongside a further context of recent use of “machine guns and heavy weapons” in the area by the Turkish Army.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On October 9th, 2023, an alleged Israeli airstrike hit an area near the Grand Mosque in central Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza strip, and an old municipality building in its vicinity, injuring civilians and reportedly killing a number of others. Wafa news reports that the Grand Mosque, which is one of the most important landmarks in the city of Khan Yunis, was attacked with several missiles, wounding a number of passers-by.

While there are no names of victims available within the sources, Shehab Agency, Ahram News, and Safa all reported that the strike had caused at least several injuries, while some sources (Abbad news) spoke about many injured civilians. Only one source, a tweet by @Mohamedmuhanna9, reported about the allegedly killed civilians: “The Grand Mosque in central Khan Yunis was targeted, and there were a number of injuries and martyrs at the scene”. As no clear number was provided regarding the number of civilians wounded, Airwars ranged the number of injured to be between two and ten based on an aggregation of multiple references to many injured civilians.

Multiple sources, including Abadd News, a Facebook user Albader, and 26 September Net, all alleged that Israeli forces intended to hit the mosque, while Shehab Agency and Najah TV alleged the strike was aimed at a house nearby the mosque. All sources claim the strike hit a civilian area within Gaza.

The exact time of the incident and further details about the victims are unknown. Airwars recorded a civilian harm incident the same day resulting in the deaths of at least several civilians and in the destruction of the old municipality building of Khan Yunis, which is adjacent to the Grand Mosque. As at least one source mentioned “several strikes”, this incident has been coded separately as ISP0045. Given the proximity of the locations of both incidents, and the lack of details regarding the victims of ISPT0060, it is possible that some of the casualty figures tracked here overlap. Airwars will update both incidents should new information come to light.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.
