Airwars assessment

Between 15 and 30 civilians including six women and at least five children were killed – and dozens more people injured – in alleged Russian airstrikes targeting schools in Anjara, according to multiple sources.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that warplanes believed to be Russian struck the Mustafa Ruston elementary school in the morning, killing at least 17 non-combatants including nine children. But they later reported that 13 were killed, including 12 students and a teacher, while eight others were  injured.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights 15 were killed, including 12 children, one civilian woman and one female teacher. The source stated that the death toll was likely to rise because people were still missing and many were severely injured. Haaretz/Reuters also put the number of children killed at 12, plus a teacher.

The White Helmets referred to a “demented bombardment by warplanes targeting the western countryside of Aleppo with more than 14 raids targeting Kafrnaha, Khan Al A’ssal and the town of A’njara which led to the death of 19 children in addition to a man and a woman in an initial count,” but did not say who the warplanes belonged to.

However, the Shaam News Network said that three schools were targeted by Russian forces. They initially put the death toll at eight with dozens injured – mostly children – but it then rose to 30, again with dozens injured and most of these being children.

VDC has named 15 victims including three unidentified male children.

Airwars assessment

One civilian was killed in an airstrike on Abtaa, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights – though it is unclear whether Assad regime or Russian forces were responsible.

The Observatory reported that regime forces bombed the town of Abtaa in the northern countryside of Dara’a, and that this was followed by raids by warplanes “believed to be Russian on areas in the town“. It said one person died and others were wounded.

VDC later named Khalil Deifallah Abo Kanoun (pictured) as later dying in Jordan from wounds sustained in the attack, though blamed the regime.

Airwars assessment

11 civilians including five women and two children were killed and nearly 35 injured in airstrikes on Douma, according to multiple sources. While most sources allege Russia was responsible, one blamed the Assad regime.

The Shaam News Network reported that 10 non-combatants died following raids by Russian warplanes, which also caused considerable damage to residential buildings.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights did not identify the warplanes responsible but said that eight people, including one child and two women, had been confirmed dead while two others had not been identified. It added that the death toll was expected to rise due to the severity of the injuries.

Other sources including the Violations Documentation Center, the Syrian Media Organisation and the White Helmets (who put the death at 10 including two children and four women) blamed Russia. Both the Syrian Media Organisation and the White Helmets posted distressing videos showing children being dug out from the rubble.

However, the Syrian Network for Human Rights said that regime shelling killed at least seven, including one child and four women. And video blogger Yasser al Fawwal filmed victims of what he said were both Russian airstrikes and Assad regime missile strikes.

10 victims were named by the Violations Documentation Centre as well as one Unidentified  female adult.
