Airwars assessment

According to various reports, 10 people were killed and 20 injured following an alleged Coalition strike at Qayyarah targeting by mistake civilians houses.

Al Qayyarah Now – which described the strike as accidental – said children were among the dead. The Arabi Asad blog said two families died. Other local reports described heavy shelling of the town, which was reportedly captured from ISIL two days later.

In the second of their March 2020 civilian casualty reports, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that the allegation provided insufficient information on the timing and location of the strike to make a determination.

Airwars assessment

Five civilians were killed and seven others injured – Furthermore, 8 ISIL fighters killed – Followed an alleged Coalition on an ISIL web media office in the Cairo neighbourhood of eastern Mosul.

According to LBC, Maj. Younis Khalil al-Taie, a Special Forces (Gold Division of the Ministry of Defense), quoting medical sources, that the forensic medicine department in Mosul received early Wednesday the bodies of five civilians and eight gunmen who were killed an air raid carried out by coalition aircraft on the website of the organization in the Cairo neighbourhood. He added that Mosul General Hospital received seven civilians were extremely dangerous wounded in the same air strike.

Given reported British actions in the area that day, Airwars flagged the incident to the UK’s MoD which said ” we can confirm that there was no UK involvement” in the event. Airwars has asked for additional details.

More than 20 civilians were killed or wounded in Mosul following the alleged coalition airstrike, according to local sources.

An initial report from ISIL-controlled Al A’amaq said that 7 people died and 14 injured in a Coalition bombing on the Al Tanak neighbourhood of Mosul. Other outlets released similar figures. Iraqi Spring Media Center blamed the Coalition but did not report casualty figures. Iraq on meanwhile only identified heavy shelling in Al Tanak, while Iraq News Center put the civilian toll at 30 killed and wounded.

Airwars assessment

Local residents told Airwars researchers that an entire family was killed following alleged Coalition air strikes on their house in Qudis neighbourhood in East Mosul, in the afternoon of December 26th 2016. This was reported in an interview with two witnesses, on June 9th 2017.

The two witnesses, Ala Samir Ahmed and Ali Abdulrazaq, said that the entire family of Abdullah Al Malha died when Coalition airstrike failed to hit the house of a Russian ISIL member (a sniper) and instead hit the neighbouring house. That house had been used by the Al Malha family, who had been displaced after they fled from Guier. They all died in the incident.

In their June 2020 civilian casualty report, the US-led Coalition assessed reports that they were responsible for civilian harm in this strike as “non-credible”, stating that no Coalition actions were conducted in the geographical area at that time.

In a previously unknown incident or incidents, the Coalition concluded after self-reporting by personnel that no civilians had been killed or injured in Coalition strikes on Mosul on January 10th.

According to a March 4th statement, two separate incidents of concern occurred. In the first it was assessed that “no civilians were harmed in this strike.” In the second event, it was reported that “After a review of available information and strike video there was insufficient information to assess that any civilians were harmed in this strike.”

Local and press sources claimed that nine civilians were killed and more than twenty wounded in an airstrike conducted by planes of the US-led Coalition on Al Qa’im City.

According to Yaqein “a news source said that Coalition forces launched intensive raids on the city of Qaim, western Anbar province, killing nine civilians. The source added that the raids resulted in the injury of more than 22 civilians were injured.”

However in its April assessment the Coalition denied involvement: “Feb. 24, 2017, near Al-Qa’im, Iraq, via self-report: After a review of available information and strike video it was assessed that no civilians were harmed in this strike.”

A UN report on the protection of civilians in context of Nineveh operations and the retaking of Mosul stated: “In the morning of 5 March, an airstrike targeted an ISIL post in the ISIL—controlled residential area of the Souq al-Sha’areen neighbourhood, in central Mosul. Sources reported that a civilian home was hit, killing seven civilians, including two women, and wounding five others, including a woman. In addition, ISIL militants at a checkpoint were also killed.”

Local eyewitnesses reported the deaths of 25 civilians following an air or artillery strike on the hermit area of West Mosul.

An unpublished Amnesty International field investigation was shared with Airwars: ““On the street we were staying, in my uncle’s house, three houses were levelled by one attack, around 12pm on 15 March. I don’t know if it was mortars, or artillery, or an airstrike. I think it was artillery, because I heard the “ssssss” sound before it hit. After the attack, 5 families were dead under the rubble – at least 25 people. One of the families was headed by “Abu Amar.” No IS fighters were killed. Our neighbours said that IS fighters ate lunch in one of the house, and they prayed there. Of course the strike came 20 minutes later, when the fighters were already gone. I saw the destroyed houses the next morning, when we ran out of the house. The houses were on our same street, just one house away from ours.”
