One civilian was injured by alleged Russian missile strikes/shelling of the city of Chuhuiv on April 9, 2022.

As part of an investigation into violations of the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported on Telegram and Facebook that Russian forces fired a long-range missile at the city of Chuhuiv, resulting in damage to residential buildings and about 10 cars, in additional to an injury of one of the residents to their eye. The Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group provided similar information on casualties and damage.

Both of the sources attributed the incident to Russian forces. While the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office identified long-range missiles as being part of the attack, the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group stated that the Russian military shelled the city of Chuhuiv.

A 59 year old civilian was killed and three other civilians, including a child and a woman, were injured by alleged Russian shelling of Chuhuiv on April 24, 2022.

Volodymyr Tymoshko, head of the Main Department of the National Police of the Kharkiv region, announced on Facebook that Russian shelling of Chuhuiv resulted in the injury to a child and her mother. The child was born in 2010 and sustained shrapnel injuries to the right and left thigh, and right and left shin. The mother was born in 1986 and sustained shrapnel injuries to the left thigh. Another local resident born in 1953 sustained shrapnel injuries to the back on the left and air accumulation in the lung cavity.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office announced they were conducting a pre-trial investigation into the artillery shelling of the city of Chuhuiv at around 12:00 resulted in the death of a 59 year old resident and the injury of three others, including an 11 year old boy, as well as damage and destruction to residential buildings.

Mayor Galina Minayeva confirmed to Suspilne Media that there was destruction in the private sector and high-rise buildings in Chuhuiv due to shelling.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the shelling to Russian forces. Multiple local sources pointed out that the shelling occurred on Orthodox Easter holiday.

On May 4th 2022, Kharkhiv Human Rights Protection group reported that Russian shelling of the town of Balakeya near Kharkiv resulted in one man dying. Suspilne quoted Oleg Sineguboy, the head of the Kharkhiv Regional Military administration who added that the “the deceased is from the village of Zalyman between the temporarily occupied Balaklia and Izyum”.

On the morning of 1 May 2022, at approximately 11am, alleged Russian artillery fire hit the village of Odnorobivka in the Bohodukhiv region of Kharkiv, injuring one man. The incident was reported widely across Ukrainian news outlets, with the information coming from the prosecutor’s office suggesting that the injured man was 27 years old and the shelling had damaged a residential house and some property on farmland.

Suspilne News reported that it was specifically the petrol station on an agricultural enterprise which was hit and caught fire as a result of shelling. Photos showed a plume of dark black smoke characteristic of petrol fires. Suspilne News and some other outlets reported that the injured man sustained shrapnel wounds and was 30 years old, but the majority of sources stated 27.

As of 2 May 2022, the Head of the Zolochiv community told Suspilne News that the petrol station continued to burn. The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that a pre-trial investigation has been opened into the incident.

On February 26th 2022, one elderly woman was reportedly killed when an alleged Russian forces artillery strike hit a residential nine storey building with the address of 40a Buchma Street, in Kharkiv.  20 other people were rescued and two were reportedly taken to hospital, injured.

Redpost.com reported that there was destruction of the “bearing wall of the staircase and flights of stairs from the 2nd to the 7th floors, building structures of apartments on the 4th, 5th and 6th floors were damaged.” It reported that the elderly women died as a result of the destruction that was caused by the artillery fire, who lived on the 5th floor.

The Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office announced an investigation into the incident based on a violation of the laws and customs of war related to premeditated murder (part 2 of article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The time of the incident was reported from 21.00 to 22.50.

Four civilians were allegedly killed and at least 15 other civilians were injured when a Russian missile shelled a supermarket on March 6th 2022, in Pyatykhatky, Kharkiv.

Local source @aliev_aliev reported that the civilians were killed whilst they stood outside the supermarket.

A statement from the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s office said, “it was established that on March 6th 2022, around 12pm, Russian serviceman fired artillery of unknown characteristics at the Khazar supermarket on Akademika Valtera Street in Kharkiv.”

Maksim Myhailiuk wrote on Facebook, that “on March 6th 2022, a shell or bomb hit the store in the afternoon and killed people: children, women and men. In my peaceful, sleeping area Pyatikhatki on the outskirts of the city of Kharkiv. The photo shows how bodies and a sea of blood lie near the entrance to the store. For what? What are we to blame?…”

Multiple local and English language sources refer to a Russian Grad multiple-launch rocket system as being responsible for the attack.

A man was killed and up to seven others, including two women, were injured in their homes by alleged Russian shelling and/or airstrikes on the town of Liubotyn on March 28, 2022.

Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union reported that during a shelling of the town of Liubotyn one person was killed, seven others were injured, and seven houses and a car were damaged.

Suspilne News originally reported on Telegram that in addition to the death, two others were injured but later revised their toll to seven injured, adding that a dead man was found under the rubble of one of the houses.

The State Emergency Services stated that “At one of the fires in the city of Lubotyn, rescuers removed the body of a dead man born in 1957 from under the rubble. It was possible to save two more people: a man and a woman. They were immediately hospitalized by a team of doctors at a local medical facility.”

A Facebook post by Denys Lubotynskyi described a family that was affected by the shelling: “6-year-old, her mother and father remained on the street. Under the rubble of the house, their relative, grandfather and 90-year-old great-grandmother were injured and are currently in the hospital.”

Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office posted on Telegram that a pre-trial investigation was opened into the Russian Armed Forces missile attack on Lyubotin which resulted in the death of one man and the injury of seven others.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the casualties to Russian forces. @tsnua referred to “rockets” being used during the attack and @Kelli_Nixe tweeted that the enemy fired two cruise missiles. Other local sources identified air strikes as being carried out.

Airwars assessment

On April 10th, 2022, two civilians were reported killed and three civilians were reported injured after an alleged Russian shelling of the Pisochyn village in Kharkiv.

According to a pre-trial investigation launched under the procedural supervision of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, two people were killed and three were injured when Russian servicemen fired on Pisochyn at about 17:00 on April 10th. @Kharkiv1654 reported via Telegram that one neighbor was killed “while running to the basement” when they were “caught by shrapnel.” DSNS Kharkiv additionally reported via Telegram that rescuers of the Kharkiv garrison of the SES found the bodies of two people in Pisochin who had sustained fatal injuries.

According to Kharkiv Today, all of the victims were “residents of the private sector which had been targeted by the shelling.”

Oleg Sinegubov, the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, stated that [Russian forces] shelled the civilian infrastructure of Pisochyn during the day. The village head, Oleh Cerhnobay, detailed that the shelling also damaged private houses.

All sources alleged Russian responsibility for the strike.
