Airwars assessment

At least one civilian was killed and and six others, including one to three children and a woman, were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on various locations in Latakia in the early morning hours on May 5, 2021.

Images posted by @SAMSyria0 show three different children, a woman, and an elderly man being treated for wounds allegedly sustained during the Israeli strikes. Another tweet reported that according to the General Authority of Masyaf National Hospital, quoting Dr. Maher Younis, 10 injuries were being treated so far, including four serious injuries, from strikes near Deir Shamil in Hama. It is unclear if those injured are civilians or militants.

@SAMSyria0 identified “Lieutenant Sharaf: Hussein Ali Faisal Abeda”, a regime soldier, as being killed in the strikes on Lattakia.

According to Syrian Arab News Agency, “a civilian was martyred in the aggression, and six others, among them a child and his mother were injured, in addition to causing material damages as the Israeli aggression targeted a civilian plastics factory.”

However, Shaam reported that the it was actually a military facility, “activists on social media circulated scenes showing successive fires and explosions emanating from a site that was hit by an air strike in what is believed to be a warehouse of ammunition and weapons belonging to Assad’s forces and the Iranian militias supporting him.”

A tweet from @AsaadHannaa, a journalist for Al Monitor, identified the facility as being “suspected to manufacture drugs of Captagon pills and other drugs in #Latakia; belonging to Badih and Wissam Al-Assad (the family of Bashar Al-Assad)”.

@SAMSyria0 also identified a wood and ceramics warehouse as being struck in the vicinity of al-Raml al-Janoubi neighborhood in the south of Lattakia, in addition to providing the coordinates and referring to the sites struck in Lattakia as being “completely civilian and belonging to civilians”.

Additional details from SANA were that the strikes occurred at about 2:18am and the planes came “from the direction of south west of Lattakia targeting some positions in the coastal region.” @freeehsem added that 35 missiles were used in the bombardment.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the “Israeli airstrikes hit military positions of regime forces and Iranian-backed militias in both countryside of Hama and Latakia in the early hours of Wednesday morning.” In addition, “one civilian was killed and over five others, including a woman and three children, were injured as well as the destruction of a building, but it was not known if it was a warehouse or a workshop, in Ras Shamra and Ras al-Ain in Latakia countryside. However, it is not known if Israeli missiles or shrapnel of the missiles of the regime’s air-defences left these casualties and caused the material damage.”

A post from Nors studies pointed out that “one of the targeted sites is in Ras Shamra, away from the Russian Hmeimim base, where the S-400 systems are located only 20 km away.”

Ynet News reported that according to Syrian television, as a result of the attack, electricity infrastructure in a certain area of the port city of Latakia was damaged, and as a result, the supply of electricity to residents in the area was stopped. Technical teams are working to restore the infrastructure. It was also reported that private homes in the area were also damaged as a result of the attack.

This incident was geolocated by @obretix. The majority of sources attributed the strikes to Israel but the Israeli Defense Forces refused to comment on the strikes.

The incident occured at 02:18:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

Between two and three civilians, including two children, were killed and between four and 25 others were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on Al-Zaytoun neighborhood on May 12, 2021.

According to the Anadolu Agency, “one person was killed and several injured in an Israeli raid targeting Al-Zaytoun neighborhood”. However, @GNNANOW and @batoolaloufi tweeted that three people were killed.

Al Mezan reported that “at 9:15pm, Israeli air forces fired two missiles onto Salah Eddein Street, in the east of the Al-Zeitoun neighborhood, eastern Gaza City, killing Yahya Mazen Shehada Khalifa, 13, who happened to be in the area.”

The Defense for Children International Palestine (DCIP) reported that Yahya had been walking to a shop near his home when the Israeli missile exploded, killing him instantly and dismembering his body. Yahya was pronounced dead at Shifa Hospital. In addition, dozens of residents and people passing by were injured in the blast and many homes were destroyed.

The New York Times quoted his father, Mazen Khalifa as saying “He was an innocent and sweet boy”. He “enjoyed riding his bike, had memorized several chapters of the Quran and hoped to one day visit the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem”. He was killed while he was running out to buy yogurt and ice cream for his family.

Al Mezan later added that Mahmoud Hamed Tulba, 13, died of his wounds the next day.

DCIP stated that Mahmoud had been leaving the barber shop when shrapnel from the blast hit his head. His injuries were treated at Shifa Hospital in the intensive care unit but ultimately he succumbed to his injuries and died the next morning.

Hamed Tolbeh, father of Mahmoud, told the New York Times that he was an excellent student, he liked the sciences and dreamed of becoming a mechanical engineer. “He was the backbone of our family. We could rely on him for anything, like making eggs and sandwiches for his siblings, tea and coffee for guests, cleaning the house and picking up groceries. He had a bright future but it was buried with him in the grave”. Mahmoud was killed just steps from the barber shop’s entrance where he was going to help his cousin.

@ShehabAgency put the number of civilians injured at 23 after a “house belonging to the Barakat family” was struck. @M1998HM identified 20 injuries that arrived at Al-Shifa Hospital as an initial toll while @Obada_mekkousi provided a toll of 25 injuries. Al Ghad TV gave the lowest estimate of four injuries.

One of the locations affected by the strikes was an ice factory in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, as reported by Al Sharq. DCIP further pinpointed the location to in front of an auto repair ship on Salah al-Din Street.

@AlHadath quoted Journalist Adel Al-Zanoun who identified more than 20 Israeli raids on the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood while Al Kofiya News said that only three missiles were launched. @M1998HM pointed out that the bombing occurred without warning.

The incident occured at 21:15:00 local time.

Airwars assessment

A Palestinian mother in her mid-forties was reportedly killed while her husband (49) and son were injured in an alleged airstrike by the Israeli Armed Forces in the Al-Amal neighborhood in Beit Lahiya, West of Khan Younes in Southern Gaza on May 14th/May 15th, 2021. The attack reportedly hit agricultural land next to the family’s two story house in Al-Mashrou Street.

Most sources reported the death of one civilian female, and the injury of her husband and son. Several reports identified the female casualty as Faiza Ahmed Mohammed Salama, and her husband as Ibrahim Musa Salama.

B’Tselem provided testimony from Ibrahim Salamah, 49, Faiza’s husband: On Friday, after midnight, there was massive shelling all over the northern Gaza Strip. I was with my wife and our son Musa in our apartment on the ground floor. ‘Udai and ‘Uhud were with Uhud’s family. Suraya, Musa’s wife, was also with her children at her parents’ house in a-Shati Refugee Camp. We heard very loud explosions nearby. We were in the living room, and the bombardment didn’t stop. Suddenly, I saw the window fly. I felt dizzy and fell down. I woke up several minutes later with lumps of concrete on me. I saw a concrete pillar still holding the roof up. Musa was next to me. My wife was, too, but she was buried under debris. I said to Musa, “Where’s your phone? Turn on the flashlight.” Then I told him to call for help. He called his uncle Ahmad and a friend of his. Meanwhile, I heard people shouting and screaming outside, and neighbors talking and calling Civil Defense forces and ambulances. At some point, neighbors came to rescue us. They lifted the rubble off me and pulled me out. I crawled out. Musa was taken out after me. An ambulance took us to the Indonesian Hospital. It was 1:30 A.M. At around 4:00 A.M., they extracted my wife Fayzeh’s body. I stayed at the hospital for a few hours. I was diagnosed with a fracture in the fifth vertebrae and bruises. Musa sustained bruises and partial hearing loss. We’re still recovering. At first, I went to my in-laws’, because our house was completely ruined. After the war ended, I rented this apartment.”

Only one citizen was allegedly injured according @Salehghareeb8. “We Beyond the Fence” was the only source that instead reported that “at 2 a.m. (…) two women, 19 and 50, were buried alive and killed after the army shelled their home”, claiming other local sources reported on the incident.

According to Al Mezan News, Faiza Ahmed Mohammed Salama was 44 years old, while the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights claimed she was 45.

Several sources reported that the Israeli Military fired two missiles and hit next to a two-story house that belonged to the affected family. The airstrikes left many houses destroyed according to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

Relatives of the family mourned the loss on social media. Romel Salama posted on Facebook: “My Cousin’s wife, Ibrahim Salama (Abu Musa), died after the barbaric bombing of the northern Gaza Strip, where their house was bombed”, and Abo Jihad Salama stated: “With more pride and honor, we mourn the martyr of Jerusalem, the wife of my brother Ibrahim Salama (Abu Musa)”.

@Betelgeuse100 reported that the “casualties” arrived to the Al-Shifa hospital, claiming that the father was “running to escape” when his family was hit.

The consensus among sources was that Israel was responsible for the strikes. B’Tselem reported that “According to the military, Hamas’ tunnel network ran by the house.”

The incident occured around dawn.

Airwars assessment

Two young men were killed and two others were injured by an IDF UAV at 5:30 pm near the Hammouda clinic in Beit Lahiya. Both young men killed were identified by official sources as being members of militant groups while the two others injured were identified as civilians.

Various local sources reported on the death of Ahmed Ziyad Sabah (29) and  Muhammad Nazeer Abu Oun (18), who were allegedly killed by an Israeli airstrike targeting a group of people near the Hamouda roundabout opposite of the Hammouda medical clinic. Furthermore, PCHR Gaza released a report, asserting that two other citizens were injured, one of whom was seriously injured.

@palestino_free posted on twitter: ” Muhammad Nazir Abu Aoun was sitting at the door of his house in the safety of God, when a shrapnel hit him in his chest, so he entered the house and climbed the stairs and went to his mother to see her for the last time (Mother, I cannot breathe);”.

A post by Ahmad Abu Sedo on Facebook identified Ahmed Ziyad Sabah as being a scout leader and included a photo of him with a child in a scout uniform.

Contrasting to that statement, a different local source stated that the civilians were killed, as a result of the targeted attack of a civilian car.

The Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades Telegram channel identified Muhammas Nazeer abu Oun as a member of the Hamas’ military wing and Ahmed Ziyad Sabah was identified by the Palestine Islamic Jihad’s military wing as a member of the Artillery Corps Mujahideen in the North Gaza Brigades.

All of the sources pointed to Israel as being responsible for the strike.

The incident occured at approximately 5:30 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

As many as seven civilians, including five children, were reported injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Al-Sabra neighborhood of Gaza city, on May 20th 2021, according to local reports.

Al Haq reported, at approximately 6:00 am Israeli aircraft targeted the fifth-floor apartment of Hazem Muhammad Antar Aslam (spelled Asleem and Saleem in other sources) and the bombing reportedly wounded four sleeping children. According to the source, the building located close to the Abdullah Azzam Mosque was owned by Hazem’s son. The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights puts the number of children injured in the strike at five.

Amira Aslam, 14, spoke to Reuters from her hospital bed about the strike that caused parts of her house to collapse: “We were sitting on the sofa when a missile landed. There was heavy smoke and we couldn’t see anything.”

Al Haq reported that a ten-year-old girl, Farah Hazem Muhammad Aslam, had to have her leg amputated following the strike. Palestine Now reported that her foot was amputated. Al Watan said that the three children injured alongside her were her brothers.

Three people who were injured in the strike later arrived at the Al-Shifa Medical Complex, according to The Palestinian Information Center.

Airwars assessment

Up to 10 civilians were wounded and taken to hospitals in Homs, Syria after being hit by shrapnel from an explosion, allegedly as a result either of Israeli airstrikes or an accidental explosion, on an ammunition warehouse of Hezbollah within the camp of Hassan Bin Al Haitham on the road connecting Homs to Palmyra, Homs governorate, on May 1st, 2020.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said they received information that the explosion “was caused by a new Israeli missile strike, which targeted a warehouse of ammunition and missiles belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah in the camp of Hassan bin Al-Haytham located on the road of Homs – Palmyra.” The sources of the Syrian Observatory confirmed that the camp “is for university training, but the Lebanese Hezbollah took it as headquarters a few years ago.”

However, there were different stories about the explosions that were heard in Homs. The Syrian regime said the explosion was a result of human error while moving ammunition there, which had then led to the explosion and the injury of a number of civilians who were passing at that time.

Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted a regime military source as saying “At 9:25 am on Friday, May 1st, 2020, successive explosions were heard at a military position in the city of Homs, and investigations revealed that these explosions occurred due to human error during the transportation of some ammunition”, the source said. He added that the explosions caused material and human losses due the shrapnel which scattered outside the military position.

However, the governor of Homs, Talal Barazi, said that  “the sounds heard in Homs were caused by explosions in an ammunition depot as a result of an attack on the site. He stressed that the attack included a military site and its nature was not known yet, which led to explosions. Smoke columns emerged from the site, shells fell in its vicinity, and a number of passing civilians were wounded.”

Dr. Hassan Al Jundi, Homs Health Director, told SANA that “10 injuries had arrived in public and private hospitals in the city as a result of falling flying missiles from the explosion that occurred at a military site, and the necessary aid was provided to them.”

Step News Agency provided the names of that arrived at Homs Hospital with injuries from the explosion: Muhammad Ahmad Al-Ahmad – amputated right leg, Muhammad Ali Ibrahim – two limbs amputated, Muhammad Yusef Milhem – a right hand wound and a back wound, Muhammad Omar Hussein Askari – stable general situation.

Baladi News reported that a number of Hezbollah members were killed and injured as a result of the event. They said that nine militants including officers were killed.

The incident occured at approximately 9:25 am local time.

Airwars assessment

Two civilians were killed and another was injured in alleged Israeli drone strike on farmland west of Deir al-Balah on May 11th 2021.

WAFA News reported that “the occupation planes targeted a group of citizens west of Deir al-Balah, which led to the death of a citizen and the serious injury of another.” However, Al Haya and various other sources said that two civilians were killed in the bombing.

According to Al Mezan, “on Tuesday evening, 11 May 2021, an Israeli drone fired a missile at farmland in the district of Middle Gaza. The attack killed two Palestinian brothers, 21-year-old Munther Abdel Kareem Baraka and 18-year-old Manar, running a family-owned poultry business.” Various other sources give Manar’s age as between 18 and 19 years old and Anadolu Agency listed Manar as being a woman.

A report by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, an Israeli-based research group, provided information that “the two brothers worked on their father’s poultry farm near the Deir al-Balah beach, situated near “resistance” positions in southwestern Deir al-Balah. It was so close to the outposts that shrapnel fell near the farm every time the positions were attacked. According to the family, they were killed by a missile fired from a UAV when the Israeli Air Force attacked the terrorist positions near the farm”.

@AbdulrahmanQan added that at the time the brothers were killed, they were working on the farm and Palestinian Center for Human Rights reported that “they were in a 14-dunum rented agricultural land that included 3 poultry farms, which belong to their father “Abdel Karim Mohammed Barakah”. Palestinian Center for Human Rights also reported that “at approximately 22:00, their bodies were taken to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.”

B’Tselem interviewed Abd al-Karim Barakah, 65, a father of seven including Munzer [Munther] and Manar, who said “On Tuesday evening, 11 May 2021, I was with my sons Munzer and Manar on our land. We went there despite the war because the chicks needed care. The atmosphere was tense that night. There were airstrikes all the time and drones hovering over us. We sat down under an olive tree, a few meters away from the coops. Munzer said he and Manar would go turn on the gas heaters in the coops to keep the chicks warm, and then come home. Manar was terrified of the airstrikes and held his brother’s hand. They headed to the coop and I stayed under the tree. Everything was dark because there was no power in the area at the time. When they were both 20 meters away from me, the bombings suddenly intensified and they shouted to me that they were leaving. I called out to them, “Leave everything and go home.” Meanwhile, some bales of straw caught fire and I got up quickly to put it out. As I was putting it out, I heard a loud explosion. About 45 minutes later, I was done putting out the fire and called out to my sons, but they didn’t answer. I went in the direction they’d gone and then found them lying side by side about 30 meters away. I sat down next to them and put Munzer’s head on my leg. I called, “Munzer, Munzer,” but he didn’t respond. So I left him and started talking to Manar. I called his name, but he didn’t respond either. I shouted as loud as I could for my neighbors to come, and some members of the Khsewan family, who live nearby, arrived. They picked my children up and took them to the house of a family member who lives 100 meters from the coop. Fifteen minutes later, a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance arrived and took my sons to Shuhada al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah. When we got to the hospital, the doctors examined them and pronounced them dead. We buried them the next day at noon. Munzer and Manar left school in the sixth grade and have worked in the coops with me ever since. They raised the chicks to adulthood and then sold them. They took care of the whole financial side of the business….Since our boys were killed, things at home have been very tough. My wife is suffering immensely. I take her to the doctor almost every day. She has anxiety attacks and screams and cries a lot, especially when people come to console her.”

A tweet from @Mmt90_ reported that the bodies of Munther and Manar were taken to Al-Aqsa Hospital after the strike. Images posted by EastArea on Facebook show the funeral for the brothers, with many people gathered to mourn their death.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the strikes to Israel.

The incident occured in the evening.

Airwars assessment

At least one man, identified as a member of the Mujahid Qassami, was killed and three others were injured in an alleged Israeli drone strike on Deir Al-Balah.

According to Al Mezan, Mohammed Khaled Al-Tawashi, 21, a resident of Deir Al-Balah, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Al Aqsa Hospital at 8:30am. He was killed in an Israeli drone strike the previous evening near his home.

Palestinian Centre for Human Rights added that the drone strike had occurred at approximately 7:00pm the night before on agricultural land behind a home.

Both Al Mezan and Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that Al-Tawashi’s body wasn’t found until the morning after he was killed. However, multiple sources, including @uunionnews and @GazaNewsOfficia reported that “a martyr and 3 injuries arrived at Al-Aqsa Hospital after targeting in Deir al-Balah” on May 13th. It is unclear if this is the same incident.

Al Qassam Brigades posted a memorial on their website for Mohamed Khaled Al-Tawashi, who they identified as a “Mujahid Qassami”. @SafaPs also tweeted that a resistance site was bombed in Deir al-Balah. None of the sources referred to Al-Tawashi as a civilian.

All of the sources attribute the strikes to Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces released a statement that “17:25 – IDF aircraft attack the operational apartment of the deputy commander of Hamas’ Jabalya battalion in the northern Gaza Strip, from which the latest attacks were conducted. In addition, the IDF attacked three other operational apartments, of a company commander in the Sajaiya battalion in the northern Gaza Strip, a company commander in Shabura in the northern Gaza Strip and a company commander in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.”

The incident occured at approximately 7:00 pm local time.
