Airwars assessment

On Friday, October 13th 2023, at least three civilian members of the Baraka family were killed and others were injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the home of the Abu al-Asla (Baraka) family near the Asfour station in Bani Suhaila, Khan Yunis, the Gaza Strip.

Initial reporting from Safa news mentioned “Martyrs and injuries” in the bombing, without specifying any number. Sources on social media later revealed that at least three had been killed, and the names identified were Shawqi Hussein Baraka (Abu Muhammad), his brother Adly Hussein Baraka (Abu Mahmoud), and their nephew Muhammad Baraka (Abu Hassan) the son of their brother Hassan.

Radwan Baraka shared a tearful tribute on social media, and friends and relatives shared tributes and images of the victims, “My uncle Adly Baraka, you were martyred and your daughter Hadeel followed/Your pure, fragrant blood still clings to my hands/My uncle Shawqi Baraka, you were in our house a week before the war and you asked my father, “When do you want to perform Umrah, Abu Hamid?”/Muhammad Hassan Baraka, may God have mercy on you, cousin/May God have mercy on you, martyrs of my family”. It is unclear whether Hadeel, daughter of Adly, was killed in the bombing on the 13th. Mohammed Baraka added that Shawqi Baraka was supposed to travel to Saudi Arabia soon, before he was killed.

Airwars has matched the names of some of the civilians killed with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023, which explicitly mentions that names on the list are “victims of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip”. Therefore this incident has been graded as fair, as another source also identified Israel as being responsible.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On Monday, 16 October 2023, at least five civilian members of the Dr. Fakhri Radi family, including two women and three children, were killed, and large number of civilians were reportedly injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Radi family’s home located behind the Radi Petrol Station in the west of the Nuseirat camp in the Gaza Strip.

Mieylam Media quoted the Ministry of the Interior in Gaza, confirming that there were “martyrs and wounded in an Israeli bombing of the Radi family home”. Wafa news reported that a “number of martyrs were killed and dozens were wounded in an Israeli raid on a house for the Radi family.”

According to a Facebook user Maysoon Diab Awad and the Palestinian refugee portal, the house belonged to Dr. Fakhri Radi, the head of the Humanities Department at al-Ummah University. Local sources indicated that he survived the bombing along with some of his children and his wife Rabab Rayan – however, members of his family, including his other wife alongside his four-year old daughter Zeinab Fakhri Sabri Radi, were killed. Dr. Radi’s brother-in-law Ali Rayan wrote a condolence message on Facebook for him, mourning the loss of his wife and daughter.

A family relative Rana Radi mourned the death of two boys, an eight-year old Zaid Sabri Musleh Radi and a six-year old Hamza Sabri Musleh Radi. She attached an image of the deceased children, her “beloved smiling birds of paradise”, sitting on the coach and smiling.

A Facebook user Amna and Radi shared a condolence message for his/her aunt Asmahan Radi who was also a victim of the attack.  Sources did not specify the names or details of any of those injured, and it is unclear if Dr. Fakhri Radi or his surviving wife and children were among the injured.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.

Where sources identified the belligerents all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

At least seven people were killed from the al-Daalis family, including a one-week-old baby boy, and at least seven people were injured when the al-Daalis family home in Nuseirat refugee camp, near the Al-Ahly Club, was reportedly hit by an Israeli bomb on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. The news website, Alwatanvoice.com, reported that both the al-Daalis family home as well as multiple neighboring houses were destroyed.

The victims were identified by their families as Hajja Najiba al-Daalis and her sister-in-law 46-year-old Maysaa al-Daalis, who was killed alongside her daughter, 15-year-old Nada Rafat al-Daalis as well as her son, 16-year-old Salah al-Din Rafat al-Daalis, his wife, Mai Saeed al-Daalis and a one-week-old baby Jihad Muhammed al-Daalis.

Nuseirat Panorama originally reported that eight people were injured and that one of the injured, a family member identified as Abu Farid al-Daalis, was in critical condition. Abu Farid later died of from his injuries.

The identities of the parents of the baby, Jihad Muhammed al-Daalis, are not made clear in the available sources. One source, Abu Nidal, in a tribute post on Facebook, referred to both Jihad and Salah as their nephews, making them the same generation of the family, possibly brothers or cousins. Another source, Muhammad Jabr, in a similar post on Facebook, referred to Jihad as their uncles’ grandson, making him the generation below Salah and possibly the child of Mai and Salah.

Many heartfelt tributes were made to the family on X and Facebook. Ghadeer Imad said Najiba al-Daalis was a joy and was dearly beloved. Iman Raed described Nada al-Daalis as her friend of four years who was like a sister, referring to her by the nickname “Nadosh” and saying “my hands are in her hands, and she has never abandoned me”.

In a post on Facebook, Salah al-Din Imad Al-Hajj paid tribute to Salah al-Din Al Daalis; he referred to him as his student and described him as having “high character and lofty ambitions”.

The age of Mai Al-Daalis is not clear in the available sources. However, Abu Nidal and Muhammed Jabr referred to her as the wife of Salah al-Din, who is 16 years old. She may also be under the age of 18 but, as this cannot be confirmed, this discrepancy is reflected in the civilian casualty range for this incident.

Nada Al-Daalis, Salah al-Din Al-Daalis, Maysaa al-Daalis and Jihad Al-Daalis have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities published on October 26, 2023 and their ID numbers are listed below.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli Military.

Airwars assessment

Alleged airstrikes from Israeli military aircraft killed between 23 and 35 civilians, including members of three generations of the Al-Moutawaq family, on Saturday, October 21, 2023, in the middle of the night on Masoud Street and Old Gaza Street in the Tal Al-Zaatar area in the east of Jabalia in Gaza. The number of injured civilians remains unknown.

The lowest casualty report came from Almayadeen News within an hour of the strike, although this number continued to rise with other reports throughout the night. The highest civilian death toll was reported in a post on Twitter/X by Ahmed who reported that more than 34 members of the Al-Moutawaq family had been killed.

23 victims’ names were identified by Airwars. The strike reportedly killed 35-year-old Sheikh Ibrahim Maher Sabri Al-Moutawaq, the imam of the Quba Mosque, who was a widely respected and known figure in the north of Gaza. Ibrahim’s three sisters 39-year-old Kafa Maher Sabri Al-Moutawq, 26-year-old Heba Maher Sabri Al-Moutawq, and Khadra Maher Al-Moutawq were also among those killed.

A 19-year-old girl named Tasneem Saeed Yousef Al-Moutawaq was killed alongside her younger sister and brother, 14-year-old Rawan Saeed Yousef Al-Moutawaq and 12-year-old Yousef Saeed Yousef Al-Moutawaq – as well as another brother, whose age is unknown, called Moatasem Saeed Al-Moutawaq.

Three brothers, 35-year-old Sabri Muhammad Sabri Al-Moutawaq, 30-year-old Ismail Muhammad Sabri Al-Moutawaq and 28-year-old Ahmed Muhammad Sabri Al-Moutawaq were killed alongside their sister 44-year-old Amira Muhammad Sabri Al-Moutawaq. Ismail is possibly the father of a 1-year-old girl called Celine Ismail Muhammed Al-Moutawaq, who was killed in the incident.

Three siblings, an eight-year-old girl called Raneen Abdul Rahman Maher Al-Moutawaq, a six-year-old boy called Hamza Abdul Rahman Maher Al-Moutawq and a three-year-old girl called Maryam Abdul Rahman Maher Al-Moutawaq, were killed.

Another set of young siblings, 9-year-old Zakaria Khabab Muhammed Al-Moutawaq and his 3-year-old sister Enas Khabbab Muhammed Al-Moutawaq, were also killed.

Other family members were also identified but couldn’t have their exact relationships verified. Two male family members called Kholoud Al-Moutawaq and Abdul Muti Yousef Al-Abd Al-Moutawaq (aged 49) were killed. Three female family members 63-year-old Etidal Ali Muhammed Al-Moutawaq, Naima Al-Abd Al-Moutawaq and Afnan Muhammad Al-Moutawaq (Nasr), were also reported killed.

Safa News referred to the incident as having killed Ibrahim and “all his family members.”

Quba Mosque posted a condolence message for their Sheikh, Ibrahim Maher Al-Mutawaq – Abu Maher saying, “We knew him in the prayer niche of the mosque, committed to his imamate, diligent in reciting the Qur’an during prayer, adhering to the Sunnah, following the guidance of the beloved Muhammad….We will miss you in every prayer, every Friday, every visit, and every activity.”

A video posted by @AJArabicnet showed the bodies of the dead and wounded being brought to the hospital, including a wounded infant. Multiple other sources mentioned wounded from the strike but none provided a toll.

Dr. Tariq Suleiman noted that the strike took place at 1:15 am with “American barrels and missiles” that were fired by Israeli planes.

The majority of names of victims identified by sources have been reconciled to the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities published on October 26, 2023, except for Kholoud Al-Moutawaq and Moatasem Saeed Al-Moutawaq.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

بالقرب من منزل ابو طه بحي المنارة جنوبي شرقي خان يونس, near Abu Taha’s house in the Al-Manara neighborhood, southeast of Khan Yunis, Khan Yunis, the Gaza Strip

Airwars assessment

On October 22nd 2023 at dawn, at least four people were reportedly killed by an alleged Israeli airstrike on their family home in the Al-Manara neighbourhood located southeast of Khan Yunis.

All of the sources reported that four people had been killed in the strike. Reporting on the incident identified Salama Issa Muhammad Abu Taha and his two sons, Issa Salama Issa Abu Taha and Hamada Salama Issa Abu Taha as killed in the strike. A neighbour, Musa Issa Musa Al-Muzain, was also reportedly killed in the strike. @ShehabAgency was the only source to report that three sons of Salama – Youssef, Issa, and Taha – were killed in the strike. Salama, his sons Issa and Hamada, and Musa’s names were all matched names with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of nearly 7000 victims’ names and ID numbers released on October 26th but Taha and Youssef’s names was not found.

Relatives of the Abu Tama family paid tribute to their family members on Facebook with images of the victims. A Facebook post from the Abuta family in the homeland and diaspora referred to Issa as “one of the members of the media committee on the official website”.

The sources further identified that the Abu Taha family home is located next to Sayyid Qutb mosque.

In cases where sources attributed responsibility for the strike, they held the Israeli military responsible.

Due to the scale and urgency of Airwars’ assessment process, all images have been automatically uploaded to each assessment with the graphic filter applied to protect users. We have also included all images identified from the sources, which may also include any imagery of combatants.

The incident occured around dawn.

Airwars assessment

At about 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 14, 2023, the Cancer Diagnostic Center Treatment at Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City was allegedly struck by Israeli airstrikes, resulting in injuries to four hospital staff workers. The injured staff members were receiving medical treatment for their wounds at the time of reporting.

Don Binder, Canon of St. George’s Cathedral, released a statement that “At about 7:30 pm local time today, Ahli Hospital’s Diagnostic Cancer Treatment Center in Gaza was hit by Israeli rocket fire. The strike severely damaged the two upper floors, including the Ultrasound and Mammography wards.” Images provided by Don Binder show damage to the walls and the equipment in the hospital.

The Mariam Foundation also released a statement that “Our partners, the National Arab Hospital in Gaza, were hit by two missiles and the hospital was ordered to be evacuated. Al-Ahli Hospital is our primary partner in supporting cancer patients in Gaza, and it has a branch and office of the Maryam Foundation, which is responsible for the Foundation’s activity in Gaza. Evacuating the hospital means evacuating staff and patients, including cancer patients who desperately need life-saving treatments.”

The incident occured at approximately 7:30 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

Up to nine civilians (mostly from one family) were killed, and as many as 18 people were injured, in an alleged Israeli artillery strike on the Al Dhahra area in eastern Beit Hanoun on May 10th, 2021. The Israeli military however reportedly denied responsibility for the strike, claiming that the deaths were caused by a Palestinian rocket launch that went awry.

At least four of the dead were children from the al-Masri family. They were identified by a cousin, 14-year-old Ibrahim, as brothers Ibrahim and Marwan and their cousins Rahaf and Yazan. Another family member, 22-year-old Ahmed, died the following day from injuries sustained in the blast. Ahmed was due to be married in less than a week.

A further two children were also reported to have been killed in the same incident, with Defence for Children – Palestine naming 11-year-old Hussein Muneer Hussein Hamad and 16-year-old Ibrahim Abdullah Mohammad Hassanain as among the dead. AFP interviewed Hamad’s father at his funeral, who said the al Masri family were their neighbours.

Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights, alongside two other sources, also named Mohammed Ali Mohammed Nusseir as a victim of the strike. He was aged between 20 and 24 years of age. The Israeli Defense Forces listed Nusseir as “eliminated” by IDF forces and referred to him as “active in the terrorist organization Hamas”. However, Jalal, Nusseir’s brother, told Human Rights Watch that Nusseir did not belong to an armed group. According to his brother, Nusseir made an income buying and selling barley from a horse and cart and the al-Masri family were a regular supplier of his. Two people interviewed for the report said that one of the reasons so many children were killed in the strike was that they had crowded around Nusseir’s horse when it arrived at the al-Masri homes.

On July 27th 2021, Human Rights Watch published a report in which they said “an Israeli-guided missile” struck the residence of the al-Masri family in Beit Hanoun on May 10th. As part of their investigation, Human Rights Watch visited the location on three occasions and interviewed seven members of the al-Masri family, including three relatives of two people also killed in the strike. Interviewees told Human Rights Watch the attack happened shortly after 6 p.m. when family members were packing processed barley into sacks to sell to Mohammed Nusseir.

Ibrahim, the al-Masri cousin, witnessed the incident. According to his account to AFP, two of the boys had been filling sacks of straw to sell at a livestock market when the strike hit. Along with his cousins he was putting the sacks onto a cart at the time. “We were laughing and having fun, when suddenly they began to bomb us, everything around us caught fire,” he said. “I saw my cousins set alight, and torn into pieces.”

Four of those interviewed by Human Rights Watch said they saw the missile approach moments before the strike. Mohammed Attallah’s son, Mohammed Mohammed said: “I was with my brothers, packing barley into sacks. Suddenly, I saw something coming toward us from the east. When I first saw it, it was high in the air. Then it gradually descended as it came in our direction. It exploded about one meter from the ground. Something hit me in the eye, the abdomen, and legs. I flew into the air and landed on the ground. I didn’t lose consciousness. I saw that my brother Ahmed, my sister Rahaf, and my nephew Yazan were dead. Their bodies were all torn up. It was awful.” Ihsan al-Zaneen 29, who was sitting outside her parents’ house when the attack happened, said he saw “a missile” coming through the air “from the east” prior to the explosion. Ahed Hassanein, 12, who was standing on the roof of his house at the time said he saw a “big mass come from the Nahal Oz area” in Israel, an area about 7.5 kilometers southeast of Beit Hanoun, before it exploded nearby. Ghassan al-Masri, 24 , who was injured in the attack, said that he was facing east when he saw something coming from the southeast that was “flying low and quietly towards the group which then exploded in the air close to the ground.”

Human Rights Watch said remnants of the munition, photographed on the morning of May 11th, indicate that the weapon used was a type of guided missile. The lack of an impact crater also suggested the munition detonated in mid-air.

Youssef al-Masri, the father of brothers Ibrahim and Marwan, said the strike had been targeting a motorcycle that was passing by. “The children were playing with their cousins in front of the house when a man on a motorcycle passed by, and the occupation targeted him twice.” Al-Masri added, “I cannot find any justification whatsoever for targeting someone passing through overcrowded civilian neighbourhoods where dozens of children usually play.”

Other sources asserted that the strike hit a house, which Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights said belonged to Attallah Al-Masri. This included Haaretz, which were told by witnesses that the children had been playing close to their house in a plaza which was around 800 metres from the border fence. Human Rights Watch concluded that damage caused to two of the four al-Masri houses occurred after the attack on May 10th.

While the accounts differed slightly, none appeared to be contradictory. A neighbour of the Al Masri family, Ahmed Nasser, described the chaos of the scene to a Middle East Eye reporter. “We were preparing for Iftar, and children and youths were sitting in the neighbourhood, before a massive explosion, followed by another one, suddenly rocked the street,” he said. “I ran out to the street and the scene was horrific. Children were killed and young men were bleeding. Mothers were crying and screaming while the [targeted] motorcycle and its driver were on fire.”

Middle East Eye reported eyewitnesses telling them the airstrikes hit “crowded neighbourhoods after armed Palestinian groups at the eastern Gaza border targeted an Israeli military vehicle with a Kornet missile, and launched a barrage of rockets towards Israel.” Four witnesses, interviewed by Human Rights Watch, said that shortly before the attack they had heard one or more munitions being launched into Israel from Gaza. However, Human Rights Watch said they found no evidence that any of the victims were combatants, nor were there any military target at or near the site of the strike.

Eighteen other residents were reportedly injured in the incident, among them a woman and 10 children, Haaretz and Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights reported. Medical staff at Beit Hanoun said three of the victims were in a serious condition, while the others sustained light to moderate injuries. Three additional houses were reportedly damaged.

Additional members of the al-Masri family were identified as among the injured by Facebook user Kamil AJ  – Othman Issa Othman Al-Masri, Israa Rafiq Fayek Al-Masri and Ghassan Muhammad Atallah Al-Masri, alongside Nabil Muhammad Hani Shabat, Hani Mohamed Hani Shabat, Jamil Muhammad Hani Shabat, Hossam Ali Mahmoud Naseer and Mahmoud Hussam Ali Naseer.

Family members expressed their devastation to reporters following the strike. Ibrahim al-Masri, the cousin who witnessed the incident said, “Why did they leave me? I would have wanted to die as a martyr like them.” Abu Hussein Hamad, the father of Hamad, sobbed to reporters that he’d promised to buy him new shoes for the Eid celebrations. “What did this innocent child do?” he asked.

While almost all sources blamed an Israeli targeted strike for the civilian deaths, the Times of Israel – citing Channel 12 News – asserted that “the IDF is denying responsibility for the kids’ deaths, saying they were killed in a rocket launch at Israel that went awry.” And YNET reported that “The IDF claims that intelligence tests conducted during the day show that six Gazan children were killed with certainty by failed launches by Palestinian Islamic Jihad since the beginning of the escalation round.”

The ages for the children differed. Yazan was reported by one source as three months old but most identified him as two-years-old, while Marwan was aged between seven and ten and Ibrahim between 11 and 14.

The New York Times shared an image of Ibrahim al-Masri, which Defence for Children International – Palestine said was Ibrahim Abdullah Mohammad Hassanain, who also died in this incident. It is unclear which source is correct.

The organization, NGO Monitor, said discrepancies in reporting on the type of munition used in the strike by the likes of PCHR, Al Haq and Al Mezan strongly suggested the casualties were the result of a Palestinian rocket that fell short inside Gaza.

The incident occured at approximately 6:10 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

At least three civilians were injured in an alleged Israeli strike on the Islamic National Bank on Salah El-Din Street on May 12, 2021.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that “at approximately 11:50, Israeli warplanes launched 2 missiles; the first launched by a drone, at the Islamic National Bank on Salah al-Deen Street, south of al-Bureij refugee camp’s entrance.  As a result, the Bank’s 2-storey building (500 sqms) was completely destroyed while the nearby shops and houses sustained partial damage in addition to the electricity network, causing power outage in the area. Moreover, 3 passers-by sustained various injuries and were taken to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.” Al Haq also referenced three casualties in relation to this incident.

A tweet from @najireyad pointed out that “the bombing that targeted the Islamic National Bank on Salah El-Din Street in the central Gaza Strip, caused significant damage to the homes of neighboring citizens.”

While the majority of the sources refer to the building as containing the Islamic National Bank, a tweet from @lebel_or referred to it as a “HAMAS finance building”.

Mohammed Abu Jayab, economist and editor of the economic newspaper Al-Eqtesadia in Gaza, speaking to Al-Monitor, downplayed the importance of Hamas losing some of its headquarters and financial facilities. He said the “destruction of the financial institutions, namely the Finance Ministry that collects taxes, does not mean that Hamas’ financial sources will be negatively affected, as these headquarters can easily be replaced by other places after this Israeli aggression ends.”

All of the sources that attributed the strikes to a responsible party identified Israel as carrying out the strikes. A tweet from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, @IsraelMFA, verified that they carried out the strike, tweeting “the Islamic National Bank in Gaza served as a terrorist vault for Hamas, directly funding its rocket production operation. Israel is shutting down Hamas’s terror infrastructure”.

A press statement released by the IDF on the 13th May included a picture stating the damage caused to the Islamic National Bank in Khan Younis (a city just south of where this event took place), alongside a statement that also referenced another building damaged. The statement was as follows: “The IDF struck an additional multi-story building belonging to the Hamas terror organization. A short while ago IDF jets and aircraft struck intelligence offices used by the Hamas terror organization in the Rimal neighborhood. Prior to the strike, the IDF provided advance warning to civilians in the building and allowed sufficient time for them to evacuate the site. The IDF continues to strike terror targets in the Gaza Strip”.

According to Al Haq, multiple Islamic Bank sites were hit on the 12th May – it is unclear if this statement relates specifically to this event.

The incident occured at 23:50:00 local time.
