Airwars assessment

An elderly man was killed by alleged Turkish drone strikes on Al-Kharofiya village on May 18, 2023.

A local source told a North Press Agency correspondent that a civilian was killed when a vehicle close to him on the road was struck by a drone. The source also provided the name of the civilian killed: Abd al-Wahhab al-Muhammad al-Haj Hamidi (70 years old) from Al-Kharofiya village.

The Syrian Democratic Forces Press Center published a statement with similar details, adding that the drone strike on a civilian car occurred at exactly 6:30pm and despite medical intervention, Abd died from his injuries. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the Turkish drone executed two strikes on a military car of the woman’s protection units, and the civilian was injured (and later died of his injuries) by shrapnel when he was trying to help those injured in the vehicle. The earlier strike left two military members injured, according to SOHR.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the drone strikes to Turkey.

The incident occured at 18:30:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

Abd al-Wahhab al-Muhammad al-Haj Hamidi عبد الوهاب المحمد الحج حميدي
70 years old male killed

Airwars assessment

On August 25th, 2023 at least two women were injured and a young woman and child later died due to injuries sustained in a Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) perpetrated assault on Jurin and Na’orat Jurin Villages in Northwest Hama. The woman, Taryaq Rustom and child, Maher Abbas, died four days after the attack after receiving care at Hama Hospital. Maher Abbas was described as a “wonderful child.”

Sources diverge on those wounded. Both the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) and AlyaumTV stated that two women had been injured, while Sahl Al-Grab (@Sahl Al-Grab) correspondent alleged a man had also been wounded. Sources also differ slightly on what weaponry was used. Sahl Al-Ghab alleged Grad missiles had been used, which SOHR corroborates, stating that missiles and artillery shells were responsible. AlyaumTV, however, points to bombs.

Multiple sources allege that HTS was responsible for the attack. An amalgam of Sunni insurgent groups, HTS evolved out of the Nusrah Front, Al Qaeda’s former Syrian Branch. HTS operates primarily in Northwest Syria. SOHR, Sahl Al-Grab, and AlayumTV point to HTS as the perpetrator, with AlayumTV alleging the group has ties to Turkey.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

On December 28th, 2023, a 65 year-old kidney patient identified as Ahmed Abd al-Rahman Khadr reportedly died as he could not access treatment, following the reported destruction three days earlier of a dialysis center hit by alleged Turkish air or drone strikes in Qamishlo city.

Rojava TV and Ibrahim Sheikho described Ahmed Abd al-Rahman Khadr as a former kidney patient who had been sick for more than two years. Sources both said he was Syrian, born in 1958 in Amuda, Al-Jazira district, and died as he could not access treatment following the destruction of the dialysis center. Ibrahim Sheikho posted a picture of the alleged victim on Facebook. Rojava TV claimed that he had undergone three dialysis sessions in the last two years. It further stated that the dialysis center had prior to the attack capacity to treat 70 patients and was equipped with only one emergency room with one device to provide dialysis treatment. No information was available as to where the victim died.

Qamishlo puls on Facebook alongside other sources reported that on December 25th 2023, alleged Turkish bombing in Qamishlo resulted in putting the “only dialysis center out of service”. Al Hafel on Facebook posted a video showing the damage to the building and piles of rubble – the source further claimed that the Syrian Democratic Forces are using hospitals and schools, such as the dialysis center, as “headquarters”, and that these buildings are hit by alleged Turkish drone strikes. Multiple sources reported that the oxygen plant in Qamishlo was also destroyed by alleged Turkish strikes on December 25th, 2023.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Airwars assessment

Local media reported that six civilians were injured following an alleged Turkish attack with missiles/artillery shells containing “toxic gas”.

According to Nuce 24, the Turkish military occupation army targeted the village of Aranda, in the area of Shih, with an artillery shell poisoned by chemical gas (it is not yet known what the gas was). A doctor noted that the injured were suffering from nausea, burning in the eyes, itching in the body and vomiting.

Multiple sources named six injured victims.

According to Nuce, the clothes of victims had been sent for analysis to determine what chemical agents were involved.

Afrin Now reported a statement from the management of Afrin Hospital. The second page is from the chemistry lab and reads: The central chemistry lab in Afreen carried out tests of earth samples presented by you on 16/2/2018 from the village of Arnada in Sheikh al Hadid area [the location of the raid]. The results were that the earth samples contain high levels of chlorine. Other samples from around the village were tested and did not contain any chlorine 18/2/2018.

Rojava and IC Afrinresistance citing the Efrîn Health Council and the Official Press Conference on the attack also confirmed the presence of chlorine.

The Kurdish Red Crescent reported that the six injured experienced several symptoms suspected of as symptoms of chemical gas, such as respiratory issues – cough – eczema – skin irritation, narrowing pupil. The medics also suffered from skin itching and teary eyes.

It was later reported that analysis had shown traces of chlorine. According to Xeber 24: In a statement issued by the Health Council in Afrin province on 18 February 2018, the Afrin Hospital proved that the Turkish army used chlorine gas in the village of Aranda in the province of Shih. The Board indicated that they had based their report on samples that had been detected in the hospital’s laboratories.

Reuters later carried a denial by an unnamed Turkish military source: These are baseless accusations. Turkey never used chemical weapons. We take utmost care about civilians in Operation Olive Branch. According to Reuters, the source also described the accusations of wounding six civilians through a suspected gas attack as black propaganda.

In a report by Reuters, Turkey denied using chemical weapons. Reuters reported: Turkey never used chemical weapons in its operations in Syria, and takes the utmost care of civilians, a Turkish diplomatic source said, after Syrian Kurdish forces and a monitoring group accused it of carrying out a gas attack in Syria’s Afrin region.

These are baseless accusations. Turkey never used chemical weapons. We take utmost care about civilians in Operation Olive Branch, the source said.

The source also described the accusations of wounding six civilians through a suspected gas attack as black propaganda.
