Airwars assessment

At least one civilian, a  woman, was reported killed and between three and four civilians, including three children and a woman, sustained injuries during alleged Russian or Regime airstrike or artillery shelling on civilian homes in the Town of Hayyan in the northern countryside of Aleppo on February 6, 2020. Anadolu Agency noted that Hayyan was situated in one of the ‘de-escalation’ areas. Multiple sources also mentioned that vacuum missiles were used during the attack.

Regarding civilian harm, multiple sources, including Zakria Zelo, claimed that a woman, identified as Fatoum Ateeq, the wife of Hamdo Qanti, died and three children and a woman sustained injuries as a result of bombing with vacuum missiles on the town of Hayyan. Idlib Plus and the SCD Aleppo reported that a woman was killed and three children were wounded. According to a tweet from Amer4news, the three injured children and the deceased woman belonged to the same family. Baladi Network and SOHEB2019 were the only sources that claimed multiple civilian deaths.

Fresh Syria stated that the Assad Regime forces and their Russian ally were pursuing a scorched-earth policy by means of heavy artillery shellings and airstrikes on the Idlib and Aleppo governorates, including Hayyan, resulting in the forced displacement of the civilians living there.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible for the strike with the Syrian network for Human Rights attributing the attack to Syrian Regime forces, while Al Bawaba News referred to Russia as having carried out airstrikes with vacuum missiles on Hayyan. Shaam News Networked said that both Russia and the Syrian Regime were responsible for the attack on Hayyan, however they consolidated the incident into a larger report of strikes across various cities and towns.

According to SCD Aleppo, the incident took place in the afternoon.

The incident occured in the afternoon.

Airwars assessment

Ten civilians, including a medic and two children, were killed and three people were injured in alleged double Russian airstrikes on Al Shaikh Thulth neighbourhood in Idlib city on February 6th, 2020, according to local sources. The medic was identified as Abdul Rahman Majid Hilal, and two other civilians were identified as Obaidah Khaled Hilal and Mohamed Raed Haj Asaad.

Shaam News Network reported that “ten people, including a medic, were martyred and others were wounded today, Thursday, by airstrikes by Russian warplanes on the Sheikh Thulth neighborhood of Idlib, in conjunction with artillery and missile shelling in the city today [February 6th, 2020]”. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that there were at least two children among the casualties.

A medical source told SMART News Agency that Russian warplanes targeted a van on Corniche road, east of Idlib city. Among the ten civilians that were killed, there was one ambulance driver and nine unidentified people. The incident wounded three others, one of them a Syrian Civil Defence volunteer, who were reportedly near the car.

Shaam wrote that “activists from Idlib said that the Russian warplanes targeted the outskirts of Idlib from the direction of the Sheikh Thuluth neighbourhood, targeting cars on the outskirts of the city, killing a number of martyrs, and upon the arrival of Syrian Civil Defence and ambulance teams, the area was subjected to double raids that left a medic martyr and the burning of an ambulance”.

Shaam News Network stated that overall on Thursday, Russian and Syrian regime forces launched dozens of airstrikes, targeting the city of Idlib and the towns and villages of Sarmin, Qumenas, Taftanaz, Kafr Nubel and Hass.

Various tweets identified the three civilian deaths, including the medic. It is unclear if the medic was the same as the ambulance driver identified by SMART News Agency.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

One man his wife were killed and four children injured in an alleged Syrian regime or Russian artillery strikes on the night of February 4th to February 5th, 2020, according to local sources.

The Syrian Civil Defence reported that “Mr. Ahmad Rostom was killed and his family – his wife and four children were injured – due to artillery shelling by the regime forces, which targeted their house in the town of Ainjara in Aleppo countryside, at midnight on Tuesday”.

However, Step News Agency later reported that one of the injured women died on February 5th as the result of her wounds. @Step_Agency said: “A woman was killed in a missile attack by the Syrian regime forces yesterday night in the town of Ainjara”.

Several sources reported the strike took place at midnight.

@Shahbapress said Syrian regime forces used artillery and rocket launchers  to shell the town.

Activists from Aleppo told Khobar 24 that a gunman from a Turkish-backed faction was also killed in the strike. Activists reportedly told the source that Russian and Syrian warplanes carried out more than 60 airstrikes on the southern and western countryside of Aleppo.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights said Syrian regime forces’ fired artillery that struck Talhah Bin Obiadallah Mosque in the west of Einjara village partially destroying the building and damaging furniture.

Whereas some sources stated the artillery strikes were carried out by the Syrian regime, other sources did not specify a belligerent. Shaam News Network blamed both the Syrian regime and Russia.
