One woman died and several other civilians were wounded in an alleged Russian airstrike on Abin Sama’an town, according to sources on the ground.

Omawi.news.agency reported: “Russian warplanes carried out several air strikes with rockets on the towns of Abyan Semaan and Sheikh Ali in the western countryside of Aleppo, wounding several people and causing extensive damage to civilian property.”

According to Baladi on March 16th, “The cities and towns of Al-Atareb, Sheikh Ali, Babis, Maarat al-Atareb, Abyan Samaan and Kfarkermin were heavily shelled by the Russian air force. Five civilians, mostly children and women, were killed in the areas of Sheikh Ali and Abyan Samaan.”

Smart News Agency reported that a woman died and pointed to Russia as the culprit.

Local eyewitnesses reported the deaths of 25 civilians following an air or artillery strike on the hermit area of West Mosul.

An unpublished Amnesty International field investigation was shared with Airwars: ““On the street we were staying, in my uncle’s house, three houses were levelled by one attack, around 12pm on 15 March. I don’t know if it was mortars, or artillery, or an airstrike. I think it was artillery, because I heard the “ssssss” sound before it hit. After the attack, 5 families were dead under the rubble – at least 25 people. One of the families was headed by “Abu Amar.” No IS fighters were killed. Our neighbours said that IS fighters ate lunch in one of the house, and they prayed there. Of course the strike came 20 minutes later, when the fighters were already gone. I saw the destroyed houses the next morning, when we ran out of the house. The houses were on our same street, just one house away from ours.”

Five civilians including two women died in an alleged Coalition airstrike on Jadida Khabour village in eastern Raqqa, according to local sources.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported: “a man and a woman were killed and there was information about another woman who was killed in bombing by Coalition planes on areas in Jadida Khabour”.

The victims were named as Khabour Al-Mohammed Al-Khabour and his wife, and another woman: Houriya Al-Abdullah Al-Teef Al-Habbal. However a local tweeter claimed that Mr al-Khabour was only wounded.

Al Raqqa Truth named two further victims of a Coalition strike.

Between one and two civilians died and up to five were injured in an alleged Coalition airstrike on the Al Thani and Awwal neighbourhoods of Al Tabaqa, according to local sources.

According to Smart News, “local sources reported the death of one civilian and wounding of others, on Wednesday evening, as a result of aerial bombardment likely carried out by the international Coalition on Al Tabaqa city (55 km west of Raqqa). “The source told Smart that the warplanes launched two raids on the first and second neighbourhoods, killing one civilian and wounding five others, who were taken to the National Hospital in the city.”

Micro Syria also blame the Coalition putting the death toll at one civilian.

Hewar.Khayma said that two were killed – though it didn’t identify who the warplane responsible belonged to. A tweet by Abdulbaset10 had noted “An American warplane B52 is flying over Tabaqa city now.”

The Coalition itself has denied conducting strikes in the geographic area that corresponded to claims of civilian harm on this date.

Airwars assessment

Local residents and military and medical sources said that up to two dozen civilians were killed or injured due to different kinds of shelling, and strikes by US Apache helicopters. This reportedly occurred during an ongoing battle around the Bab Al Tob area and other ancient neighborhoods in the center of Mosul.

Naynawa Alghad reported on Facebook that due to the heavy clashes on Thursday morning [March 16th] between Iraqi forces and ISIL in the old parts of the city, the US intervened with Apache helicopters. A medical source said that the “battles until dawn on Thursday left dozens of dead and wounded civilians, [who] were killed in their homes by the fighting.”

Iraqi Spring said that up to 20 people were killed and 50 injured.

However, Yaqein reported that four people, including women and children, were killed and six wounded. Nineveh Media Center posted a photo (see below) of the aftermath of the strikes, saying “This is Mosul, without comment!!!”.
