Airwars assessment

Three men were killed and two to five others injured after alleged Russian airstrikes on the city of Kafar Nabil, Idlib governorate, on October 28th 2019, according to local sources. It remains contested whether the victims were civilians or militants.

@SyrianCoalition reported that 3 men were killed and 2 injured after Russian warplanes bombed residential neighborhoods of the city. The Syrian Civil Defence reported the same numbers on Facebook, and stated that “Civil Defence teams recovered the bodies of the dead and rescued the injured to nearby medical points”. According to Step News, “vacuum missiles” were used.

The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights recorded the death of 3 “fighters of rebel factions”. Smart News reported that according to local sources, “they are members of the Army of the Army of Glory of the Free Syrian Army, and were not on a military mission, where they were targeted by Russian aircraft while inside a house.”

A Step News correspondent, in addition to all other sources, however reported that all harmed were civilians.

Zaitun agency reported that “Russian warplanes bombed the southern neighborhoods of the city of Kafr Nabl, killing three civilians and wounding five others.”

Syria TV reported that the three people killed were men.

A tweet by @EyadHoms20 referred to the area affected by the strikes as residential homes and @maldoghem tweeted that “the bombing caused great material damage to civilian homes and properties”.

A video posted by @EjWhYqVDoQNnBoH showed a huge crater caused by the strikes, buildings reduced to rubble, and the bodies of two people killed.

@teskilatAr reported that the missiles came from a “Russian BM_30 Smerch launcher.”

While most sources point to Russia as the belligerent of the incident, Shaam News Agency reported that the Assad regime was responsible for the artillery strikes that killed 3 people, in addition to Russian airstrikes on the city.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
