Two children were reported killed, and between three and seven other civilians including three women were injured in alleged Russian forces or Syrian regime airstrikes on Awaijil village in the western countryside of Aleppo, Syria, on January 17th, 2020.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said “The Russian airstrikes killed two children in Awejil and injured seven others, including three women. Information was reported on escape of prisoners from Al Qasimiyah prison west of Aleppo after being bombed by Russian aircraft.”

Shaam Network described the attacks as “unprecedented aerial escalation” reporting that residential areas were targeted with “dozens of airstrikes causing deaths and injuries”.

The Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets) said the airstrikes targeted residential areas, and the Edlib Media Center the attacks targeted a shelter for IDPs in the village.

As to responsibility for this incident, SMART Agency, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Edlib Media Center pointed fingers to Russia, while Syria Coalition and Shaam Network blamed both Russia and the Syrian regime.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that within 72 hours, the number of airstrikes by Russia on Aleppo countryside and Idlib reached at least 140, while the regime conducted about 105 raids.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
