Early morning on Friday, 18 April 2025, an airstrike in the Miraale Valley southeast of Bosasso, Puntland, Somalia, was declared by US Africa Command (AFRICOM) forces in collaboration with the Federal Government of Somalia.
In a press release, US AFRICOM stated that they had conducted a “collective self-defense airstrike against ISIS-Somalia”, which was “at the request of the Federal Government of Somalia”, with the strikes occurring “southeast of Bosasso, Puntland, in northeastern Somalia.” AFRICOM did not provide details regarding the number of casualties from the strike, if any, among civilians or militants.
The Puntland Counterterrorism Office posted on Twitter/X stating that AFRICOM airstrikes hit “ISIS terrorists in the Mirale Valley, al-Miskaad Mountains.” The postThey added that these strikes were in tandem with an ongoing ground offensive by Puntland forces that killed fifty militants over the previous 24 hours, with the Somali Guardian reporting that the strikes “coincided” with the ground clashes. The Daily Somalia News reported that the ground offensive and airstrikes occurred early in the morning, and that the “heavy airstrikes hit” caves in Miraale valley that were suspected of being hideouts in “ISIS last known stronghold” in the region. Images published by local media showed soldiers in combat gear, purportedly a part of the Puntland Counterterrorism ground offensive.
As no casualty numbers were specifically tied to the airstrikes, no casualties have been quantified for this incident until further information comes to light.
Multiple local, national and social media sources quoted the official press release while reporting on the strikes.
