Last Updated: December 5, 2025

On 21 April 2025, west of the Kaam-jaroon area in the Lower Juba region of Somalia, an airstrike was conducted by U.S. Africa Command with the assistance of the Danab commandos and Jubaland Dervish forces, under the Federal Government of Somalia and Puntland authorities. No civilians were officially reported as injured or killed in the strikes. While AFRICOM did not announce the results of the strike, “officers leading the operation” confirmed that 9 members of the Al-Shabaab group had been killed. This includes leaders and militia members of the group. “Many more” militants were wounded, as reported by Caasimada Online News.

In a statement released by AFRICOM on 21 April, the US military announced that “In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike against al Shabaab approximately 60 km northwest of Kismayo in the Lower Juba Region of Somalia on April 21, 2025.” The statement did not include any other details, adding that “Specific details about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security.”

The airstrike reportedly took place approximately 60 km northwest of Kismayo and to the west of the Kaam-jaroon area, aiming at a stronghold where al-Shabaab group members were reportedly hiding. The initial airstrike led to a ´direct battle between the two sides´ with an unknown number of fatalities on either side. As Caasimada Onlie News highlighted, the officers leading the operation were ambiguous about the impact of the operation. Although the high-ranking officials declared publicly the success of the operation, the situation was described as ´tense´ and they said ´nothing that they defeated the terrorists´, concluded the local source.

In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike against al Shabaab approximately 60 km northwest of Kismayo in the Lower Juba Region of Somalia on April 21, 2025. Al Shabaab has proved both its will and capability to attack U.S. forces. AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade al Shabaab’s ability to plan and conduct attacks that threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad. Specific details about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security.
