Airwars assessment
At least five civilians, including women and children, were reported injured by alleged US airstrikes on the Attan neighborhood of Sana’a, Yemen on March 16, 2025.
The US military released a statement that “On March 15, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) initiated an operation consisting of precision strikes against Iran-backed Houthi targets across Yemen in order to restore freedom of navigation.” However, as there are no detail on the locations of these strike, the incident has been graded by Airwars as a “likely” US strike until further information is provided by the United States.
A video shared by Twitter/X account @ShahidAlmasirah was circulated widely on Twitter/X by accounts such as @TvAlmasirah, @BdyHyhat202412, @Ansurallahinfo, and @adentv20. Dated to March 16th, 2025, 3:43 PM, the video shows surveillance footage from a store in Attan. In the video, a man is seen sitting, and then jumps up when the wall next to him quakes in, rocked by the strength of the blast. The second and third clips show men sweeping glass from shattered windows on two commercial streets.
Moving to Al-Matoukl Hospital, one man, lying on a hospital bed with a large bleeding wound, describes hearing the sounds of the missile. A doctor in blue hospital scrubs describes the man’s injuries, specifying that he suffered injuries to his abdomen, spine, and back.
The broadcaster adds that women and children were admitted to a number of hospitals in the area. Video from inside Al-Ahli Modern Hospital showed bloodied, shattered window glass on the tile floor of the hospital. The broadcaster goes on to add that the incident resulted in the injury of women and children in their homes.
There were no details publicly available on the identities of those harmed, but as the news report referred to children and women being hospitalised in the plural, Airwars has put the minimum number of each group as two, in addition to the one injured man interviewed in hospital. As such, the minimum civilian harm from this incident is recorded as five injured. This assessment will be updated if more specific information emerges.
The video from @ShahidAlmasirah showed the wide-reaching effects of the bombing, with the windows of many residential and commercial buildings shattered.
Echoing that reported by the @ShahidAlmasirah video, Twitter/X user @omanvar45 emphasised that “Homes, property, and shops were damaged as a result of US aggression…”
Images shared by Twitter/X user @brranpress and Facebook users Samih Yahya and Mahyoub Abdul Hakim showed large clouds of dark smoke up over a town identified as Attan in the evening.
Facebook user Samih Yahya added that the strikes were conducted by U.S. aircraft, and Twitter/X user @MhmdSalm90801 referred to “US raids…targeting Jabal Attan”.
Images posted by sources Nezar Sameer (Facebook) and @omanvar45 have not been archived within this incident as they have been identified as images relating to different events in Yemen from previous air campaigns.
The incident occured at 15:43:00 local time.
