Airwars assessment

At least one civilian, a child, was killed and up to fifteen others wounded – including five children and two women – by an alleged US airstrike on a residential building in the Ma’in District of Yemen’s capital, Sana’a during the evening of 23 March, 2025. The strike reportedly hit the building in front of the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq School and a minibus filled with passengers.

A child named Sultan al-Qadhi was reported killed. One of the injured children was identified as Duaa Muhammad.

@Tariq__Salam included a video of the strike itself: two significant blasts are visible and glass can be seen falling on people.

A series of videos shared on X/Twitter by @TvAlmasirah showed the aftermath: an injured person – seemingly a woman – lying face-down in a car, likely on the way to receive medical attention; chaotic street scenes where blood is visible on the ground; remnants of the destroyed building; two men receiving medical attention; damage sustained to “a number of cars and vendor’s goods [from] a popular market”; Duaa Muhammad being interviewed from a hospital bed; three youths on hospital beds, one with a severe eye injury. In one video, a minibus driver described the consequences of the strike, stating that both he and all passengers in his vehicle sustained injuries. In another, a passenger reiterated the driver’s story: “I was on the bus with my son and two nephews, all of whom were injured”. Photographs shared show structural damage, and one severely injured young boy, with both legs bandaged. Khaimanews also shared a video of the immediate aftermath: one man carries an injured boy; the air is smoky with dust.

Facebook user Hisham Mohammed Mohammed Al-Shaddadi offered “sincere condolences and sympathy” to Sultan’s father, attaching a photograph of the young boy in a dark shirt.

Mwatana reported that the US airstrike, which occurred around 10pm, had “targeted” a basement used for storing iron and wood, resulting in the death of two civilians, including a child, and the injury of 12 others, including a young girl who was passing by. The strike also resulted in material damage to nearby homes and commercial stores.

Jamal Jameel, reporting one death and 13 wounded, reported the lack of capacity in hospitals: “The sad thing is that the nearest hospital to the scene of the attack announced that its capacity was full. As a result, it sent two cases back and transferred them to other hospitals”. Jameel raised concerns about the further strain on the healthcare system: “What would their situation be, God forbid, if a bombing occurred and a large number of casualties occurred, given that one of the largest hospitals had a capacity of ten wounded and couldn’t even provide first aid to the rest?”

@maeen_newz shared a video showing the inside of a home; the windows have been largely blown out, and glass shattered on the floor. In the background, children can be heard crying.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all pointed to the US military.

This assessment was updated on April 29, 2025 to include additional information from Mwatana.

The incident occured at approximately 10:00 pm local time.

The victims were named as:

Sultan al-Qadhi سلطان القاظي
Child male killed
Duaa Muhammad دعاء محمد
Child female injured
