Airwars assessment

At least three civilians, including at least one child and one woman, were killed and between 16 to 25 other civilians, including 11 women and children, were injured by alleged US airstrikes on the Shaab Al-Hafa neighborhood in the Shu’ub district of Sanaa, Yemen on April 6, 2025.

A tweet from @Jih_8 reported that a US attack “targeting” Sheikh Saleh Al-Suhaili’s home in the Shaab Al-Hafa neighborhood in Sa’wan killed four people, all siblings from the Al-Suhaili family, and 23 others were wounded, 11 of whom were women and children. @TvAlmasirah provided a similar death toll of four along with 16 injuries while the Ministry of Health was quoted by Almasdar Online as reporting the death of four civilians, including two women, and the injury of 25 others.

A Facebook post from Ahmed Abdel Hamid Al-Washli identified Sheikh Saleh’s children who were killed in the incident as Sareem Saleh Al-Suhaili, Lujain Saleh Al-Suhaili, Jaida Saleh Al-Suhaili, and Jalal Saleh Al-Suhaili. Based on images and descriptions, Sareem was likely a young boy, and pictures of him depict a smiling kindergartner, while both Lujain and Jaida were females but their age is unknown.

According to Almasdar Online, the strike on Sheikh Saleh Al-Suhaili’s home injured the Sheikh and his wife and killed four of their children. At the time of reporting Sheikh Saleh and his wife were in critical condition. Whether the Sheikh was affiliated with the Houthis was highly contested by local and international sources. Almasdar Online described Sheikh Saleh, who was from the Haraz region, as “one of the most prominent tribal leaders involved in fighting alongside the group”. However, a post from Sabry Saif Al-Anboub Al-Radfani referred to the Sheikh as a prominent Houthi leader, stating that the strike occurred while a senior figure was present. Sheikh Saleh was reportedly from Manakhah, and “most of the group’s senior leaders lived in his home in Manakhah”. This was disputed in a post from Fakri Jaber, who referred to Sheikh Saleh as “a well-known tribal sheikh who has no connection to politics or his country”.

Multiple sources including @DropSiteNews and @VocalPolitics1 published segments of an interview with Sheikh Saleh in which he confirms that his children were killed when two missiles struck his home. While Sheikh Saleh expresses support for Abdul-Malik al-Houthi and refers to himself as a “mujahid”, he also states that he isn’t a Houthi leader and didn’t have Houthi leaders at his home. Based on the competing claims, Sheikh Saleh has been classified as a contested civilian until further confirmation is found.

Sources also provided conflicting information regarding whether Jalal Saleh Al-Suhaili was affiliated with the Houthis. According to @BashaReport, Sheikh Saleh’s son Jalal was a computer science student at Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran. The source @BashaReport pointed out that anti-Houthi source @YemAware published an image that alleges that Jalal was a “Lieutenant Colonel” in the Houthi-run Ministry of Interior memorialized on a billboard but also mentioned that the authenticity of the image was unclear. A post from Mohammed Al-Masouri further asserted that Jalal was a member of the “Mahdi Youth” branch of the Houthi group abroad, with additional information on his ties to Iran. However, multiple other local sources, including Ahmed Abdel Hamid Al-Washli, stated that Jalal and his three siblings were civilians. Based on the conflicting statements, Jalal has been classified as a contested civilian until further confirmation is found.

A video posted by @gggytryare depicting “initial footage of the wounded” included a young man (possibly a teenager) being wheeled on a stretcher with an injury to his head while a young child with an oxygen mask is being treated by a team of doctors. In the same video, a man who is being treated for an injury is interviewed and mentions that an entire home was destroyed in the strike, and that women and children were among the victims. In another video from @Muhamad_AlMuta, a crying infant is seen getting an IV for injuries, while a woman and another young girl are being treated on stretchers and a man with a head injury is lying on a stretcher.

In a very graphic video posted by Abdul Qader Manshalin, the bloody body of one of the victims is seen crushed amongst rubble and an injured Sheikh Saleh is seen holding the limp limb of the victim, and a woman can be heard screaming in the background.

Images published by @Nasr_Amer1, @alhsanshaln2909, and other local sources depict an injured infant being treated, damaged windows, and piles of rubble, including one covered in blood.

A post from Sabry Saif Al-Anboub Al-Radfani desceibed the location of the house as being next to the Shaab Al-Hafa School. Hasham Mohammed posted an image of what remained of the home – one a few supporting beams still stood while the rest of the home was reduced to rubble.

Where sources attributed the attack to a belligerent, all sources identified the US as responsible. Eyewitnesses who spoke to Sabry Saif Al-Anboub Al-Radfani described the sound of violent explosions followed by low-flying aircrafts.

The incident occured in the evening.
