Airwars assessment
On Tuesday, 10th September 2024, at least two girls were killed and 17 others injured in alleged UK-US airstrikes at the Umm Al-Mu’minin Aisha School in Al-Jund area, Taiz District, Yemen.
Local sources reported that two female students from the Umm Al-Mu’minin Aisha School for girls were killed during the incident: Hamas Abdullah Abedalsalam who was in seventh grade and Saja Ahmad Ali who was in fifth grade.
Sources reported that up to 17 civilians were injured as a result of the alleged airstrikes and were taken to the military hospital and Al-Quds hospital in Al-Jund. While a majority of sources report that nine students were injured, additional sources reported up to 17 were injured with the lowest injury toll of five provided by @TvAlmasirahl. Furthermore, the Facebook User Fahad posted that in addition to the nine students injured, up to 13 students fainted as a result of the “stampede of female students when they left the school.”
Facebook user Anwar posted photos of big crowds of people gathering on the street for the funeral of Hamas Abdullah Abedalsalam and Saja Ahmad Ali.
Monazama posted on Facebook “We at Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms condemn these inhumane practices for which civilians and innocents pay the price, and we call on all free people in the world to condemn this crime and express their solidarity with the victims from the students of Umm Al-Mu’minin School in Taiz Governorate.”
Al Yemen posted on Facebook “The Ministry of Education and Scientific Research called on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards this criminal act and hold its perpetrators accountable.”
The Twitter/X user @mmdly135395 posted a photo of an explosion at the site of Umm Al-Mu’minin Aisha School where there are large clouds of smoke and fire in the daytime.
Multiple sources posted photos of girls wrapped in bandages in hospital, including one girl pictured with bandages on her finger and with an IV treatment and at least two other girls being helped to walk by doctors and others. Images of the bodies of both young girls were also posted by multiple sources, and in another image a body wrapped in a white shroud can be seen.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the US military and the UK military.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement that “In the past 24 hours, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces successfully destroyed one Iranian-backed Houthi missile system in a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen.” Due to the lack of locational information provided by CENTCOM, we have not been able to match this statement to the incident in which civilian harm occurred. Therefore, this incident has been graded as a “likely strike”.
The UK military did not release any statements around the time of the strike.
This assessment was updated on October 31, 2024 to remove an image which was not relevant to this incident and had been reused from a previous article unrelated to this event.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
The victims were named as:
