Airwars assessment

The Pentagon announced on March 6th 2017 that it had conducted an airstrike against AQAP in Yemen on February 28th, though no other sources could be found to verify this.  This appeared to have been the first action of a serious intensification of US strikes in Yemen through the first week of March 2017.

Two local language Twitter sources did however note on February 28th that air strikes against AQAP in Al Suma’a, Bayda province had increased in frequency, and noted the killing of seven “terrorists”.  It was unclear whether this reflected a long term death toll of strikes in the area, or casualties of a specific strike on that day.  The content of both sources was the same, indicating that one was repeating the other, or both were repeating a third unavailable source.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

Defense Department officials detected and tracked multiple missile launches out of North Korea today, four of which landed in the Sea of Japan, Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters this morning.

Explosive ordnance disposal technicians assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5, Platoon 501, prepare for an EOD mine-countermeasure exercise with members of a South Korean navy underwater dive team off the coast of Jinhae, South Korea, as part of exercise Foal Eagle 2017, March 3, 2017. Davis said the four medium-range ballistic missiles were launched from the northwest corner of North Korea, traveled over the Korean Peninsula and out into the sea, totaling about 1,000 kilometers in distance, or more than 620 miles.

Missiles Land Off Japan’s Coast

The missiles landed in the vicinity of Akita Prefecture off the coast of Japan near that nation’s exclusive economic zone, he said. The EEZ is defined as a sea zone prescribed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea over which a state has special rights regarding the exploration and use of marine resources, including energy production from water and wind.

“The North American Aerospace Defense Command detected that the missiles from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America,” Davis said. “This [North Korean missile launch] is very similar in terms of the path and the distance of the three missiles that flew into Japan’s EEZ in September 2016.”

He added, “These launches, which coincide with the start of our annual defensive exercise, Foal Eagle, with the Republic of Korea’s military, are consistent with North Korea’s long history of provocative behavior, often timed to military exercises that we do with our ally,”

The United States stands with its allies “in the face of this very serious threat and are taking steps to enhance our ability to defend against North Korea’s ballistic missiles, such as the deployment of a [Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense] battery to South Korea, which will happen as soon as feasible,” Davis said.

U.S. Strikes AQAP in Yemen

Also overnight, the United States made an airstrike on Yemen’s Abyan Governorate against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula fighters, bringing to 40 the strikes there in the past five nights, Davis said.

Since the first airstrike against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen on Feb. 28, “We will continue to target [al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula] militants and facilities to disrupt the organization’s plot and protect American lives,” the captain said.

The strikes have been coordinated with and done in full partnership with the government of Yemen with the goal of denying al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula terrorists’ freedom of movement within traditional safe havens, Davis emphasized.

The captain also confirmed the deaths of three al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula operatives in March 2 and 3 airstrikes in Yemen.

Usayd al Adani, whom Davis described as a longtime al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula explosives expert and facilitator who served as the organization’s emir, was killed in a U.S. airstrike March 2 within the Abyan Governorate. Killed with him was former Naval Air Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detainee Yasir al Silmi.

Killed March 3 was al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula fighter and communications intermediary for Adani, Harithah al Waqri, Davis said.

“[Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula] has taken advantage of ungoverned spaces in Yemen to plot, direct and inspire terror attacks against the United States and our allies,” he said. “And we will continue to work with the government of Yemen to defeat [al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula].

Airwars assessment

Several sources alleged that US battleships bombarded the area of Al Khabr in al-Maraqisha, Abyan governorate, on February 2nd 2017, where AQAP militants were allegedly based. There were no reported civilian or combatant casualties.

One anonymous Yemeni government official, speaking to Reuters, said that “ships fired several missiles towards the al-Maraqisha mountains, where al Qaeda elements are based. The ships are widely believed to be Americans.  We have received no information on the outcome of the shelling”.

According to the Washington Times, “government officials” told the Associated Press that the area had been shelled by US warships for five consecutive days, though no further sources corroborated this claim, except for some local language reports of US naval shelling on February 1st.  Sky News Arabic reported that “local sources” had alleged US naval strikes in the area.  According to Reuters, the “al-Maraqisha mountains are a key al-Qaeda stronghold in Southern Yemen”, after militants were driven there when Zinjibar and Jaar fell to Yemeni government forces in 2016.

US Pentagon spokesperson Captain Jeff Davies denied US involvement in the naval shelling, Reuters reported.  One source indicated that tribal sheikh Faisal Mohammed Baleedi also denied any bombing in the region, while Al Mushahid reported that an anonymous “security source” had additionally denied that shelling was taking place.

The incident occured in the morning.

Some local language Twitter users alleged that US battleships bombarded the area of Mojan, al-Maraqisha, Abyan province early on February 1st 2017, where AQAP militants were allegedly based.  One source claimed that fisherman in the Shaqra area spotted American battleships approaching from the coast.  There were no known reports of civilian or combatant casualties.

Other sources later claimed that US shelling took place in the same area on February 2nd.  One anonymous Yemeni government official, speaking to Reuters, said regarding the February 2nd strikes that “Ships fired several missiles towards the al-Maraqisha mountains, where al Qaeda elements are based. The ships are widely believed to be Americans.  We have received no information on the outcome of the shelling.”

Airwars assessment

On January 25th 2017,  a US spokesperson stated that a strike in al-Bayda governorate on January 21st had killed three “AQAP operatives”.  This confirmed reports that a drone strike had targeted a vehicle in Suma’a district on that evening.  There were no known reports of civilian casualties.

A number of public sources had earlier reported that a US drone strike on 21st January hit a car in Sama’a district, Bayda province, killing a number of AQAP members.

US Central Command later confirmed that a strike on 21st January had killed three AQAP members, as part of a three officially acknowledged strikes between January 20th and 22nd.  One source suggested that a pickup truck was struck twice by Hellfire missiles.  Though most local sources corroborated that three had been killed in the strike, the New York Times reported on 22nd January that seven AQAP militants had been killed in a strike against a vehicle.

Some sources claimed that the attack had resulted in the death of Abu Anis al-Abi, a local AQAP leader, though others, including AQAP itself, asserted that he had died in an earlier strike on January 20th.

Although these strikes marked the first of the new Trump administration in Yemen, the Washington Post cited Pentagon spokesperson Navy Captain Jeff Davis as saying that the actions had not required approval by recently appointed Defense Secretary James Mattis or from President Donald Trump.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
