Military reports – December 2018

Monthly summary: Below are all known published daily Coalition military reports relating to the air war against so called Islamic State or Daesh in Iraq and Syria for December 2018. We have also included relevant video and photo releases. Beginning in June 2018, the Coalition began issuing once weekly reports, issued each Monday for the previous seven days, though Airwars continues to disaggregate these by date.

‘Operation Roundup, which began May 1 for the defeat of ISIS in the Middle Euphrates River Valley and Iraqi – Syrian border region, has continued to gain ground and remove terrorists from the battlefield through offensive operations coupled with precision Coalition strike support.

Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve and its partner forces’ operations are exerting pressure on ISIS senior leaders and associates, as well as degrading, disrupting and dismantling ISIS organizational structures throughout Iraq and Syria.

Operation Roundup will continue to target ISIS remnants as the Coalition remains committed to the lasting defeat of ISIS to increase peace and stability in the region, and to protect all our homelands from ISIS’s terrorist threat.

Weekly Strike Summary

Between Nov. 25 and Dec. 01, CJTF-OIR conducted 90 strikes consisting of 151 engagements in Syria and Iraq.

On Dec. 01 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 12 strikes consisting of 18 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 12 strikes destroyed five vehicles, nine supply routes, one reservoir, two staging areas and one oil petroleum lubricant facility.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 01, 2018.

On Nov. 30 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 12 strikes consisting of 29 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 12 strikes destroyed five fighting positions, four armored vehicles, nine vehicles and one storage facility.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Nov. 30, 2018.

On Nov. 29 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 18 strikes consisting of 28 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 18 strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units, and destroyed 15 supply routes, four vehicles, one command and control center, three fuel trucks, one piece of heavy equipment and two staging areas.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Nov. 29, 2018.

On Nov. 28 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 12 strikes consisting of 15 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 12 strikes engaged six ISIS tactical units and destroyed one supply route, two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, three vehicles, two fighting positions, two command and control centers and three pieces of heavy equipment.

On Nov. 28 in Iraq, there were three strikes consisting of four engagements.

•       Near the Hamrin Mountains, two strikes destroyed five buildings and four tunnels.
•       Near Hawijah Pocket, one strike destroyed one cave.

On Nov. 27 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 13 strikes consisting of 24 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 13 strikes engaged four ISIS tactical units and destroyed eight supply routes, 15 vehicles, one IED facility, one piece of communication equipment and one command and control center.

On Nov. 27 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of one engagement against ISIS targets.
•       Near Kirkuk, one strike engaged one ISIS tactical unit.

On Nov. 26 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted five strikes consisting of six engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, five strikes destroyed two bridges, one IED facility, one tunnel, and two supply routes.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Nov. 26, 2018.

On Nov. 25 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 14 strikes consisting of 26 engagements against ISIS targets.

•       Near Hajin, 14 strikes engaged 12 ISIS tactical units and destroyed one vehicle, two fighting positons, two supply routes, one UAS launch site, three buildings, one command and control center and one weapons cache.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Nov. 25, 2018.

Between Nov. 25 and Dec. 01, CJTF-OIR detected 45 strikes from other actors that crossed the Euphrates River Valley. CJTF-OIR is committed to avoiding and in every case minimizing civilian casualties; CJTF-OIR calls on all other actors in the area to observe the same precautions. ‘

Update from French MoD on December 6th:

[From November 28th to December 4th, the aircraft of Operation Chammal made 16 air sorties and conducted one airstrike. Task Force Wagram conducted 61 firing missions from Iraq – 24 lighting, 37 destruction.]

SITUATION MILITAIRE DU THEATRE

 

Offensive contre les dernières poches de Daech en Syrie
Dans la région d’Hajine, dans la moyenne vallée del’Euphrate, profitant de conditions météo défavorables, Daech a lancé à nouveau des offensives contre les positions des forces démocratiques syriennes (FDS). Celles-ci se sont heurtées à des frappes aériennes et des tirs d’artillerie de la coalition. Au bilan, la ligne de front n’a pas évolué cette semaine.
Poursuite des actions de sécurisation en Irak
En Irak, la situation est inchangée. Les opérations des forces de sécurité irakiennes (FSI) se poursuivent. A la frontière, l’effort visant à contrer toute tentative d’action d’infiltration de Daech depuis la Syrie est maintenu.

ACTIVITE DE LA FORCE

 

Le dispositif français déployé au Levant n’a pas évolué. La frégate légère furtive Aconit patrouille actuellement en Méditerranée orientale dans le cadre de la fonction stratégique connaissance et anticipation.
La Task Force Wagram en appui de l’offensive contre les dernières poches de Daech présentes dans la vallée de l’Euphrate

La Task Force (TF) Wagram appuie les forces démocratiques syriennes contre Daech dans la région d’Hajine.

De façon à assurer une précision maximale des tirs, Wagram dispose de la nouvelle station météo baptisée SEPHIRA (Station d’Elaboration de Profils atmospHérIques et Radiosondage pour l’Artillerie) qui permet de transmettre aux pièces d’artillerie les éléments atmosphériques influant sur la trajectoire des obus : force et direction du vent, température, taux d’humidité ou encore pression atmosphérique.

De plus, cette semaine ont été employés, pour la première fois en opération, les obus Bonus, qui sont des munitions antichars à effet dirigé, de précision métrique. Chaque obus Bonus dispose de deux charges militaires, ce qui permet de détruire deux véhicules blindés avec une seule munition. Ainsi, le 3 décembre, alors qu’une colonne de véhicules de Daech est détectée, la TF Wagram a reçu l’ordre de lui barrer la route. Après un premier tir de barrage, Daech contourne la zone et relance son action. Ordre est alors donné à Wagram de détruire la colonne. Au bilan, l’emploi de 4 obus Bonus a permis la neutralisation de 8 véhicules blindés.

La TF Wagram a réalisé, depuis le territoire irakien, 61 missions de tir (24 éclairement, 37 destruction – bilan du 28 novembre au 4 décembre inclus).
Depuis le début de son engagement, la Task Force Wagram a réalisé 2288 missions de tirs.
Les bases aériennes en Jordanie et aux EAU en appui des opérations

Les aéronefs français basés en Jordanie et aux Émirats arabes unis poursuivent leurs actions contre Daech, au sein de la coalition.

Cette semaine, les aéronefs de l’opération Chammal ont réalisé 16 sorties aériennes (bilan du 28 novembre au 4 décembre inclus). Les Rafale français ont conduit 1 frappe cette semaine sur des combattants de Daech.

Bilan total de l’action du pilier appui aérien depuis le 19/09/14 :

8688 sorties / 1482 frappes / 2283 objectifs neutralisés.

Les Task Forces Monsabert et Narvik poursuivent leurs missions de formation
La Task Force (TF) Monsabert poursuit sa mission d’assistance et de conseil de l’état-major de la 6ème division irakienne.
La TF Narvik, poursuit sa mission de formation et de conseil de l’Iraki Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS), notamment dans les domaines suivants : mise en œuvre d’armes lourdes, combat motorisé, lutte contre les engins explosifs improvisés, sauvetage au combat et tir de précision.’

Between Dec. 2 and Dec. 8, CJTF-OIR conducted 251 strikes consisting of 494 engagements in Syria and Iraq.

On Dec. 8 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 39 strikes consisting of 63 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 39 strikes engaged 10 ISIS tactical units, and destroyed 21 fighting positions, four staging areas, three command and control nodes, one financial facility, one petroleum oil and lubricant facility, one mortar launching site, one piece of engineering equipment, one vehicle, two supply route and one UAS facility.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 8, 2018.

On Dec. 7 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 46 strikes consisting of 66 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 46 strikes engaged one ISIS tactical unit, and destroyed 19 fighting positions, seven pieces of heavy equipment, seven staging areas, five supply routes, four command and control nodes, three vehicles, one building and one financial facility.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 7, 2018.

On Dec. 6 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 32 strikes consisting of 63 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 32 strikes engaged four ISIS tactical units, and destroyed 13 fighting positions, five staging areas, six supply routes, two pieces of engineering equipment, one logistics facility, one petroleum oil and lubricant tanker, one piece of heavy equipment, one heavy machine gun, one tactical vehicle and one financial facility.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 6, 2018.

On Dec. 5 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 41 strikes consisting of 82 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 41 strikes engaged eight ISIS tactical units, and destroyed 19 fighting positions, three command and control nodes, three vehicles, two staging areas, two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices, two supply routes, two logistics facilities, one piece of heavy equipment, one media cell and one building.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 5, 2018

On Dec. 4 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 31 strikes consisting of 66 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 31 strikes engaged seven tactical units, and destroyed 15 fighting positions, eight staging areas, four supply routes, two pieces of engineering equipment, three command and control nodes, one piece of heavy equipment, and one weapons facility.

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 4, 2018.

On Dec. 3 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 38 strikes consisting of 93 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 38 strikes engaged 12 tactical units, and destroyed 10 supply routes, five staging areas, two weapon caches, four improvised explosive device facilities, two buildings, two fighting positions, one anti-aircraft system, one rocket storage site, one tunnel, two heavy equipment, and one vehicle storage.

On Dec. 3 in Iraq, Coalition military forces conducted one strike consisting of nine engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Sulayman Bek, one strike engaged three tactical units, and destroyed two buildings and damaged one building.

On Dec. 2, 2018 in Syria, Coalition military forces conducted 23 military strikes consisting of 51 engagements against ISIS targets.
•       Near Hajin, 23 strikes engaged two tactical units, and destroyed four command and control nodes, one building, one storage site, six staging areas, six supply routes, one tactical vehicle and three fighting positions, and suppressed seven supply routes and one fighting position. 

There were no reported strikes conducted in Iraq on Dec. 2, 2018.

We received delayed reports for strikes conducted by Coalition military forces on Nov. 3 and Oct. 4.

‘Operation Roundup, which began May 1 for the defeat of ISIS in the Middle Euphrates River Valley and Iraqi- Syrian border region, has continued to gain ground and remove terrorists from the battlefield through offensive operations coupled with precision Coalition strike support.

Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve and its partner forces’ operations are exerting pressure on ISIS senior leaders and associates, as well as degrading, disrupting and dismantling ISIS organizational structures throughout Iraq and Syria.

Operation Roundup will continue to target ISIS remnants as the Coalition remains committed to the lasting defeat of ISIS to increase peace and stability in the region, and to protect all our homelands from ISIS’s terrorist threat.
