The Israeli army and the Shin Bet internal security service announced on Thursday the assassination of the commander of the Shujaiya Battalion of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army said in a statement that "Haitham Rizq Abd al-Karim Sheikh Khalil, the commander of the Shujaiya Battalion of the Hamas organization, who led and attacked Nahal Oz in the massacre that took place on October 7, 2023, was killed." The statement explained that Sheikh Khalil's killing came after an Israeli airstrike yesterday "on a command and control compound in Gaza City, approximately one kilometer from IDF forces operating in the area, where a number of Hamas terrorists were operating, planning and executing terrorist attacks targeting citizens of the State of Israel and IDF forces." The statement noted that "Khalil, during the war, promoted and advanced hostile plans against Israeli forces, including planting explosive devices and booby-trapping combat areas." The Israeli army resumed its intensive bombardment of Gaza weeks ago following disagreements over negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on January 19, following a devastating 15-month war between the Jewish state and Hamas. At least 23 people were killed in the Israeli airstrike on Gaza City on Wednesday, including children and women, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense.

علن الجيش الإسرائيلي وجهاز الأمن الداخلي (شاباك)، اليوم (الخميس)، اغتيال قائد كتيبة «الشجاعية» التابعة لحركة «حماس» في قطاع غزة. وجاء في بيان للجيش الإسرائيلي أنه «تم قتل هيثم رزق عبد الكريم شيخ خليل، قائد كتيبة (الشجاعية) في منظمة (حماس) الذي قاد وهاجم ناحال عوز في المذبحة التي جرت في 7 أكتوبر (تشرين الأول) 2023». وأوضح البيان أن قتل شيخ خليل جاء بعد غارة إسرائيلية أمس «على مجمع قيادة وسيطرة في مدينة غزة، على بُعد نحو كيلومتر واحد عن قوات جيش الدفاع العاملة في المنطقة حيث عمل داخله عدد من المخربين التابعين لـ(حماس) الإرهابية، ممن عملوا على التخطيط للعمليات الإرهابية المستهدِفة لمواطني دولة إسرائيل وقوات جيش الدفاع وتنفيذها». ولفت البيان إلى أن «خليل قام خلال الحرب بالترويج ودفع مخططات عدائية ضد القوات الإسرائيلية، بما في ذلك زرع عبوات ناسفة وتفخيخ مناطق قتالية». واستأنف الجيش الإسرائيلي منذ أسابيع القصف المكثّف على غزة بعد خلافات بشأن مفاوضات المرحلة الثانية من اتفاق وقف إطلاق النار الذي دخل حيّز التنفيذ في 19 يناير (كانون الثاني)، إثر حرب مدمّرة استمرّت 15 شهراً بين الدولة العبرية و«حماس». وقُتل 23 شخصاً على الأقل في الغارة الجوية الإسرائيلية على مدينة غزة، الأربعاء، بينهم أطفال ونساء، وفق الدفاع المدني الفلسطيني.
