Iraqi sources revealed details of the attack that targeted a headquarters of an Iraqi faction loyal to Iran on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of a prominent leader in the al-Nujaba Movement and several of his companions.

Reuters quoted Iraqi police sources as saying that at least two missiles targeted a building used by the al-Nujaba Movement on Palestine Street, east of the capital.

The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) announced in a press statement that the American attack killed Abu Taqwa al-Saidi, a leader within the organization, and described the incident as "a brutal act of aggression."

A photo of al-Saidi was distributed by platforms affiliated with the PMF (Telegram).

However, informed sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that a drone launched four missiles at the al-Nujaba headquarters in Baghdad.

The sources, citing information from PMF leaders, said that "the first three missiles struck a convoy of three vehicles used by the companions of al-Nujaba Movement leader Abu Taqwa al-Saidi." The fourth missile targeted a fourth armored vehicle, in which al-Saidi was riding, sitting in the passenger seat. The vehicle was parked next to the al-Nujaba office inside the headquarters.

Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the drone had been waiting for al-Saidi's vehicle to enter the al-Nujaba headquarters for several hours, as he was believed to be returning from a mission in Syria.

Al-Saidi is a key figure in what is known as the al-Nujaba Movement's "Special Operations" unit. He was tasked with controlling areas around Baghdad during the battles against ISIS after 2016. (Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces vehicles guard the site of today's attack - AFP)

Reuters quoted a local commander in the al-Nujaba Movement as saying that the group "will take revenge on the Americans and make them regret committing this attack." According to sources who spoke with Asharq Al-Awsat after the attack, gunmen from the al-Nujaba Movement arrested a passerby walking near the headquarters, on suspicion of providing an external party with information and coordinates about the al-Nujaba Movement near and inside the headquarters.

Videos published by websites affiliated with the group showed a destroyed and burning car, which they claimed was the target of the attack.

Two security sources said that Iraqi security forces deployed to the area, and a security team arrived at the site to conduct a preliminary investigation.

Later, a US official told Reuters that Washington carried out the attack, killing an individual responsible for attacks against the international coalition in Iraq and Syria.

The US military has been attacked at least 100 times in Iraq and Syria since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in October, with attacks typically carried out using a combination of rockets and explosive-laden drones. There was no immediate comment from Washington on the latest attack in Baghdad, but Iraqi military sources link attacks not claimed by the US to Israel.

The United States has 2,500 troops in Iraq on a mission it says is aimed at advising and assisting local forces trying to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.

لكنَّ مصادر مطّلعة أبلغت «الشرق الأوسط» أن طائرة مُسيّرة أطلقت أربعة صواريخ على مقر «النجباء» في بغداد.
وقالت المصادر التي استندت إلى معلومات من قياديين في «هيئة الحشد الشعبي»، إن «الصواريخ الثلاثة الأولى ضربت رتلاً من ثلاث عجلات (سيارات) يستخدمها مرافقو القيادي في حركة النجباء أبو تقوى السعيدي».
أما الصاروخ الرابع فاستهدف «عجلة رابعة مصفحة، كان السعيدي يستقلها، جالساً في المقعد المجاور للسائق، وكانت مركونة إلى جوار مكتب النجباء داخل المقر».
وأفادت المصادر، لـ«الشرق الأوسط» بأن الطائرة المسيرة كانت تنتظر عجلة السعيدي حتى تدخل إلى مقر «النجباء» بعد انتظار دام لساعات، فيما يعتقد أنه كان «عائداً من مهمة كان ينفذها في الأراضي السورية».
ويعد السعيدي من الشخصيات المحورية في ما تعرف بـ«العمليات الخاصة» لحركة «النجباء»، وأُنيطت به مهمة السيطرة على مناطق حزام بغداد، خلال المعارك ضد تنظيم «داعش» بعد عام 2016.

ونقلت «رويترز» عن قائد محلي في «حركة النجباء»، أن الفصيل «سينتقم من الأمريكان ويجعلهم يندمون على ارتكاب هذا الاعتداء».
وحسب المصادر التي تحدثت مع «الشرق الأوسط» بعد الهجوم، فإن مسلحين من حركة «النجباء» اعتقلوا «عابر سبيل كان يمشي في الشارع القريب من المقر، للاشتباه بأنه زوَّد جهة خارجية بمعلومات وإحداثيات عن حركة النجباء قرب المقر وفي داخله».
وأظهرت مقاطع مصورة نشرتها مواقع مؤيدة للفصيل سيارة مدمَّرة مشتعلة، وزعمت أن الهجوم استهدفها.
وقال مصدران أمنيان إن قوات الأمن العراقية انتشرت في المنطقة، ووصل فريق أمني إلى الموقع لإجراء تحقيقات أولية.
وفي وقت لاحق، أبلغ مسؤول أميركي «رويترز» أن «واشنطن نفذت الهجوم، وقتلت شخصاً كان مسؤولاً عن هجمات ضد التحالف الدولي في العراق وسوريا».

وتعرّض الجيش الأميركي للهجوم 100 مرة على الأقل في العراق وسوريا منذ بدء الحرب بين إسرائيل وحركة «حماس» في أكتوبر (تشرين الأول)، وعادةً ما كانت تُشن الهجمات بمزيج من الصواريخ وطائرات مُسيّرة ملغومة. ولم يصدر تعليق على الفور من واشنطن عن الهجوم الأخير في بغداد، لكنّ مصادر عسكرية عراقية تربط الهجمات التي لا تتبناها واشنطن بالإسرائيليين.

وللولايات المتحدة 2500 جندي في العراق في مهمة تقول إنها تستهدف تقديم المشورة والمساعدة للقوات المحلية التي تحاول منع عودة تنظيم «داعش».
