Fatima Hassouna: The Eye of Truth Assassinated by Israel

Photographer Fatima Hassouna, nicknamed "The Eye of Gaza," has been added to a long list of journalists martyred during the war on the Gaza Strip. This attempt to eradicate Gaza journalists, so that no one in the Strip remains who can report the truth and the crimes of the occupation.

Fatima's colleagues and friends were shocked by Israel's assassination of the Eye of Truth. She was targeted, along with ten members of her family, in a direct airstrike on their home in the Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza City.

Hassouna documented Israel's crimes and violations against civilians since the beginning of the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza. She conveyed the suffering of the people of the Gaza Strip to the world, depicting the suffering of women and children, the destroyed homes, the siege, and starvation.

Photographer Fatima Hassouna said in her final will: "I want a resounding death. I don't want to be in breaking news, nor as a number in a group. I want a death that the world will hear about, an impact that will last a lifetime, and immortal images that will not be buried by time or place."

The war forced Fatima to shift from photographing weddings and gatherings to capturing the sorrows and massacres being committed in Gaza, chronicling the suffering of the Strip's people through her lens.

Fatima Hassouna never left the field since the beginning of the war, documenting the massacres with her lens under bombardment and fire. She carried the pain and cries of the people in her photographs, and faced death daily until the occupation committed its final massacre against her.

She was waiting for her white dress next week, when she ascended and was shrouded in a different white shroud, unlike the one Fatima had anticipated, becoming a bride in heaven.

The Center for Defending Journalists stated that Fatima Hassouna was a creative photographer who covered Israeli violations in the Gaza Strip. Her photos were published in international media outlets and had a significant impact in conveying the humanitarian reality of the aggression.

According to the center's documentation, the number of journalists killed in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, has risen to approximately 212, an unprecedented toll in the history of modern conflicts.

The center considered the attack to also constitute a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2222 of 2015, which emphasizes the need to protect journalists.

The center called on the international community to open an immediate investigation into the incident and hold those responsible accountable. It stressed the need to take urgent steps to ensure the safety of journalists and enable them to carry out their work freely, in accordance with international conventions and standards.

ارتقت المصورة فاطمة حسونة الملقبة بـ”عين غزة”، تضاف إلى قائمة طويلة من الصحفيين الذين استشهدوا خلال الحرب على قطاع غزة، في محاولة لإبادة صحفيي غزة، لكي لا يبقى أحد في القطاع ينقل الحقيقة وجرائم الاحتلال.

سيطرت الصدمة على زملاء وأصدقاء فاطمة بعد اغتيال إسرائيل عين الحقيقة، إذ استهدفت مع عشرة من أفراد عائلتها في قصف مباشر على منزلهم في حي التفاح شرق مدينة غزة.

وثقت حسونة جرائم إسرائيل والانتهاكات بحق المدنيين منذ بداية الحرب على الإسرائيلي المتواصلة على غزة، حيث نقلت معاناة أهالي القطاع للعالم تصور معاناة النساء والأطفال والمنازل التي دمرت والحصار والتجويع.

قالت المصورة فاطمة حسونة في وصيتها الأخيرة: “أريد موتًا مدويًا، لا أريدني في خبر عاجل، ولا في رقم مع مجموعة.. أريد موتًا يسمع العالم به، وأثرًا يظل مدى الدهر، وصورًا خالدة لا يدفنها الزمان ولا المكان”.

أرغمت الحرب على انتقال فاطمة من تصوير الأفراح والاجتماعات إلى تصوير الأحزان المجازر التي ترتكب بغزة وتروي آلام أهالي القطاع بعدستها.

ولم تغادر فاطمة حسونة الميدان منذ بداية الحرب، وثقت المجازر بعدستها تحت القصف والنار، حملت وجع الناس وصرخاتهم في صورها، وواجهت الموت يوميًّا، حتى ارتكب الاحتلال مجزرته الأخيرة بحقها.

كانت تنتظر فستانها الأبيض الأسبوع القادم، إذ ارتقت وكفنت بالكفن الأبيض آخر لا يشبه ما انتظرته فاطمة، فتصبح عروسًا في الجنة.

وقال مركز حماية الصحفيين إن فاطمة حسونة كانت مصورة مبدعة، وغطت الانتهاكات الإسرائيلية في قطاع غزة، ونُشرت صورها في وسائل إعلام دولية، وكان لها تأثير كبير في نقل الواقع الإنساني للعدوان.

وبحسب توثيق المركز، فإن عدد الصحفيين الذين استشهدوا في قطاع غزة منذ السابع من أكتوبر/تشرين الأول 2023، ارتفع إلى نحو 212، في حصيلة غير مسبوقة في تاريخ النزاعات الحديثة.

واعتبر أن الهجوم يمثل أيضًا خرقًا لقرار مجلس الأمن الدولي رقم 2222 الصادر عام 2015، والذي يؤكد على ضرورة حماية الصحفيين.

وطالب مركز حماية الصحفيين، المجتمع الدولي بفتح تحقيق فوري في الحادث ومحاسبة المسؤولين عنه وشدد على ضرورة اتخاذ خطوات عاجلة لضمان سلامة الصحفيين وتمكينهم من أداء عملهم بحرية، بما يتوافق مع المواثيق والمعايير الدولية.
