The Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip announced today the martyrdom of journalist Ismail Abu Hatab, bringing the number of media professionals killed since the beginning of the war on the Strip to 228.

Abu Hatab was a prominent photographer who collaborated with several local and international media outlets and had previously organized photo exhibitions outside Palestine to highlight the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

In an official statement, the Media Office affirmed that the targeting of Palestinian journalists is part of a systematic policy pursued by the Israeli occupation to obscure the crimes committed against civilians. The statement also strongly condemned the continued targeting and killing of journalists, considering it a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and freedom of journalism.

The statement called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Federation of Arab Journalists, and all press unions and associations worldwide to condemn these crimes and stand with Palestinian media professionals. The media office also held the Israeli occupation and its supporting countries, primarily the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, fully responsible for what it described as crimes of genocide against civilians and media professionals in the Gaza Strip.

The media office called on the international community and human rights organizations concerned with press freedom to prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes in international courts and to take urgent action to halt the aggression and protect Palestinian journalists.

The statement concluded by offering condolences to the family of the martyr and all journalistic families, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured media workers.

أعلن المكتب الإعلامي الحكومي في قطاع غزة، اليوم، عن استشهاد الزميل الصحفي إسماعيل أبو حطب، ليرتفع بذلك عدد الشهداء من الإعلاميين منذ بدء الحرب على القطاع إلى 228 صحفياً.

ويُعد أبو حطب من المصورين البارزين الذين تعاونوا مع عدة وسائل إعلام محلية ودولية، وسبق له تنظيم معارض فوتوغرافية خارج فلسطين لتسليط الضوء على الواقع الإنساني المتدهور في غزة.

وأكد المكتب الإعلامي، في بيان رسمي، أن استهداف الصحفيين الفلسطينيين يأتي ضمن سياسة ممنهجة يتّبعها الاحتلال "الإسرائيلي" للتعتيم على الجرائم المرتكبة بحق المدنيين. كما أدان البيان بشدة مواصلة استهداف الصحفيين وقتلهم، واعتبر ذلك انتهاكاً صارخاً للقانون الدولي الإنساني وحرية العمل الصحفي.

ودعا البيان الاتحاد الدولي للصحفيين، واتحاد الصحفيين العرب، وجميع النقابات والهيئات الصحفية في العالم إلى إدانة هذه الجرائم والوقوف إلى جانب الإعلاميين الفلسطينيين. كما حمّل الاحتلال "الإسرائيلي" والدول الداعمة له، وعلى رأسها الولايات المتحدة، والمملكة المتحدة، وألمانيا، وفرنسا، المسؤولية الكاملة عمّا وصفه بجرائم الإبادة الجماعية بحق المدنيين والإعلاميين في القطاع.

وطالب المكتب الإعلامي المجتمع الدولي والمنظمات الحقوقية المعنية بحرية الصحافة بملاحقة مرتكبي هذه الجرائم في المحاكم الدولية، والعمل العاجل على وقف العدوان وحماية الصحفيين الفلسطينيين.

وختم البيان بتقديم التعازي لأسرة الشهيد وجميع الأسر الصحفية، متمنياً الشفاء العاجل للمصابين من العاملين في المجال الإعلامي.
