Palestinian Territories - The Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC) mourns the death of photojournalist Hassan Hamad, who was martyred in the early hours of Sunday morning after the Israeli army targeted his home in the northern Gaza Strip.
According to testimonies collected by the center, 26-year-old journalist Hamad was killed after his home was targeted by an artillery shell in Jabalia camp. His body, in pieces, arrived at Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip.
Hamad worked as a cameraman collaborating with Al Jazeera Mubasher and several local media outlets. In his last message to a group of journalists shortly before his death, he documented the Israeli airstrike on a house near the Riyad al-Saleheen Mosque, the sounds of Israeli military vehicles, and the displacement of civilians from Jabalia camp. He was also subjected to several Israeli attacks during his journalistic work, and the Israeli army threatened him to dissuade him from continuing his journalistic work. The martyrdom of journalist Hamad coincides with the end of the first phase of the Israeli war on Gaza, which has killed and wounded dozens of journalists. This comes amidst the Israeli army's policy of targeting journalists while they were working or inside their homes since the start of the horrific war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
The Center for Defending Journalists reiterates its strongest condemnation of the Israeli army's continued targeting of journalists in the Gaza Strip and the murder of journalist Hamad. It emphasizes the need for urgent and immediate international intervention to halt Israel's unprecedented targeting of journalists in the Strip, which has recorded the bloodiest death toll of journalists in the 21st century.
It also affirms that since the beginning of the war on Gaza, Israel has deliberately targeted Palestinian journalists, both male and female, and media outlets in general to prevent coverage, obscure the truth, and ensure the documentation and exposure of genocide crimes to the international community is halted.
It explains that the Israeli army has turned journalists into military targets without regard for the principles of protection afforded them by international humanitarian law, particularly the provisions of the Geneva Convention and human rights conventions.

وفقًا لإفادات جمعها المركز فقد استشهد الصحفي حمد (26 عاما) بعد استهداف منزله بقذيفة مدفعية في مخيم جباليا، ووصل جثمانه أشلاء إلى مستشفى كمال عدوان في شمال القطاع.
وكان “حمد” يعمل مصورا متعاون مع قناة “الجزيرة مباشر” ومع عدد من وسائل الإعلام المحلية، ووثق في آخر رسالة كتبها عبر مجموعة للصحفيين قبل استشهاده بوقت قصير استهداف الطيران الإسرائيلي منزلًا قرب مسجد رياض الصالحين وتقدم أصوات آليات الاحتلال وعمليات نزوح المواطنين من مخيم جباليا، كما تعرض لعدة استهدافات إسرائيلية خلال عمله الصحفي، إضافة إلى أن الجيش الإسرائيلي هدده لثنيه عن مواصلة عمله الصحفي.
ويتزامن استشهاد الصحفي “حمد” مع نهاية العامل الأول للحرب الإسرائيلية على غزة وقتل وجرح عشرات الصحفيين في ظل نهج الجيش الإسرائيلي القائم على استهداف الصحافيين خلال عملهم الصحفي أو داخل منازلهم منذ بدء الحرب المروعة على قطاع غزة في السابع من أكتوبر/ تشرين الأول 2023.
ويجدد مركز حماية الصحفيين، إدانته بأشد العبارات تواصل استهداف الجيش الإسرائيلي للصحفيين في قطاع غزة وجريمة قتل الصحفي “حمد”، ويؤكد على الحاجة إلى تدخل دولي عاجل وفوري لوقف الإمعان الإسرائيلي غير المسبوق في استهداف الصحفيين في القطاع الذي يسجل الحصيلة الأكثر دموية لقتل الصحفيين في القرن الواحد والعشرين.
كما يؤكد أنه منذ بداية الحرب على غزة، تعمدت إسرائيل استهداف الصحفيين والصحفيات ووسائل الإعلام الفلسطيني إجمالاً لمنع التغطية وحجب الحقيقة وضمان وقف عمليات توثيق جرائم الإبادة وفضحها أمام المجتمع الدولي.
ويوضح أن الجيش الإسرائيلي حوّل الصحفيين لأهداف عسكرية دون اعتبار لمبادئ الحماية التي منحتها لهم قواعد القانون الدولي الإنساني لا سيما أحكام اتفاقية جنيف ومواثيق حقوق الإنسان.
