Journalist Akid Roj (Shervan Sido) was martyred on February 15, 2025, in an airstrike by Turkish occupation forces on the Tishrin Dam area in northeastern Syria, while covering the popular resistance against the occupation.

Akid Roj was one of the most prominent media figures who participated in conveying the reality of the Kurdish people's resistance, and he was a living witness to the occupation's expansionist attempts. This attack adds to a long series of Turkish attacks on journalists and media professionals, in an attempt to cover up its military defeats and undermine confidence in the popular resistance.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Media Center issued an official statement following the martyrdom of journalist Akid Roj, who was targeted by Turkish occupation forces while covering resistance activities in the Tishrin Dam area in northeastern Syria.

The statement reads:

The Turkish occupation and its affiliated mercenary groups continue to launch their terrorist attacks on areas of northeastern Syria, attempting to expand their occupation. To this end, they view the Tishrin Dam area as a key target, considering it important in every respect.

For over two months, our forces and our people have displayed historic resistance, thwarting all the occupation's attacks. The entire world, thanks to the free press, has witnessed the resistance of our people and our forces. The occupying state has entered a state of defeat in its ground war as well as in its psychological warfare. In this regard, the work and struggle of media personnel and journalists have left their clear mark in foiling all attacks.

The occupying state, in order to cover up its defeat, always targets journalists. Recently, on February 15, journalist Akid Roj-Sharvan Sido was targeted by the occupying state's aircraft while covering the people's activities at the Tishrin Dam, and he was martyred. Journalists like Nazim, Jihan, and Akid are the eyes of our people in the dam resistance and have played a key role in the defeat of the occupying state. These attacks on the press aim to terrorize and instill fear in our people, as well as to give confidence to mercenary groups and weaken the resistance of our people and our forces at the Tishrin Dam. However, everyone must know this fact; For over 40 days, our people have continued their resistance despite all the attacks and dangers. The mercenary groups have been gripped by fear of this resistance and have lost their will, fleeing the battlefields against our people and forces. Every day, the resistance at the Tishrin Dam grows stronger. Undoubtedly, heroes like Akid Roj have played a significant role in bringing this resistance to the public's attention and exposing the crimes of the occupation.

Akid Roj was born in Afrin into a patriotic family that has offered many martyrs and heroic resistance fighters. Early in 2012, with the outbreak of the revolution in North and East Syria, he joined the revolutionary struggle and fought for a time in legitimate defense activities. Later, he joined the field of journalism and remained a member of the free media for many years. Akid Roj dedicated considerable effort to covering the resistance in Afrin, the Shahba region, and Aleppo. He worked to cover the resistance and the operations to liberate these areas from the mercenary groups. In 2018, he spent more than two months alongside the fighters, monitoring, covering, and documenting the resistance operations in Afrin. He also worked for many years documenting the conditions of our displaced people in the Shahba region. Recently, while covering civilian protests at the Tishrin Dam, he was targeted.

Akid Roj was a dedicated and courageous fighter on every front of the war and resistance. He was present at every resistance point within the Rojava Revolution, providing media coverage and reviving the legacy of free journalism. He never wavered in his pursuit of the truth, and for this reason, he became a target of the Turkish occupation.

While we condemn the Turkish occupation state for its ongoing crimes, we call upon all international institutions and organizations protecting journalists not to remain silent in the face of the targeting of journalists. We remember our comrade Akid Roj with the utmost reverence and respect, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and our people. We renew our pledge to follow in his footsteps and to uphold the principles of free journalism until victory is achieved.

ويُعد “عكيد روج” من أبرز الوجوه الإعلامية التي شاركت في نقل حقيقة مقاومة الشعب الكردي، حيث كان شاهداً حياً على محاولات الاحتلال التوسعية. هذا الهجوم يُضاف إلى سلسلة طويلة من الاعتداءات التركية على الصحفيين والإعلاميين، في محاولة لتغطية هزائمها العسكرية وزعزعة الثقة بالمقاومة الشعبية.
أصدر المركز الإعلامي لقوات سوريا الديمقراطية بيانًا رسميًا، في أعقاب استشهاد الصحفي “عكيد روج” الذي استهدفته طائرات الاحتلال التركي أثناء تغطيته لفعاليات المقاومة في منطقة سد تشرين شمال وشرق سوريا.

يستمر الاحتلال التركي ومجموعات المرتزقة التابعة له، بشن هجماتهم الإرهابية على مناطق شمال وشرق سوريا، ويحاولون من خلالها توسيع رقعة احتلالهم. وهم لهذه الغاية ينظرون إلى منطقة سد تشرين كهدف هام لهم، وأن له أهمية من كل النواحي.
منذ أكثر من شهرين؛ أبدت قواتنا وشعبنا مقاومة تاريخية، وأحبطت جميع هجمات الاحتلال. والعالم أجمع، وبفضل الصحافة الحرة، كان شاهداً على مقاومة الشعب وقواتنا. دولة الاحتلال، دخلت في حالة الهزيمة في حربها البرية وكذلك في حربها النفسية. في هذا الصدد كان لعمل ونضال أعضاء الإعلام والصحفيين بَصمتهم الواضحة في إفشال جميع الهجمات.
دولة الاحتلال، ومن أجل التستر على هزيمتها دائماً تستهدف الصحفيين. مؤخراً، وبتاريخ 15 فبراير/ شباط، تم استهداف الصحفي “عكيد روج – شرفان سيدو” من قبل طائرات دولة الاحتلال، وذلك عندما كان يغطي فعاليات الشعب في سد تشرين، واستشهد فيها. الصحفيون من أمثال “ناظم، جيهان وعكيد” هم أعين شعبنا في مقاومة السد، ولعبوا دوراً رئيسياً في هزيمة دولة الاحتلال. هذه الهجمات على الصحافة؛ هدفها إرهاب وزرع الخوف في نفوس شعبنا، وكذلك كي تمنح الثقة لمجموعات المرتزقة ولإضعاف مقاومة شعبنا وقواتنا في سد تشرين. إلا أنه يجب أن يعلم الجميع هذه الحقيقة؛ من أكثر من 40 يوماً وشعبنا مستمر في مقاومته رغم جميع الهجمات والمخاطر، ومجموعات المرتزقة سيطر عليهم الخوف من تلك المقاومة وفقدوا فيها إرادتهم وهم يفرون من ميادين المواجهة مع شعبنا وقواتنا، وكل يوم ازدادت مقاومة سد تشرين قوة. دون شك أن الأبطال من أمثال “عكيد روج” كان لهم جهد كبير في إيصال هذه المقاومة إلى الرأي العام وفضح جرائم الاحتلال.
ولد “عكيد روج” في عفرين ضمن عائلة وطنية قدمت العديد من الشهداء والمقاومين الأبطال. وفي وقت مبكر من عام 2012، ومع انطلاقة ثورة شمال وشرق سوريا، انضم إلى النضال الثوري، وناضل لفترة من الزمن ضمن فعاليات الدفاع المشروع. بعدها انضم إلى عمل الصحافة، وظل يعمل كعضو في الإعلام الحر ولسنوات طويلة. بذل “عكيد روج” جهوداً كبيرة في تغطية مقاومات “عفرين، مناطق الشهباء وحلب”. وعمل على تغطية مقاومة وعمليات تحرير تلك المناطق من المجموعات المرتزقة. في عام 2018، ظل نحو أكثر من شهرين بجانب المقاتلين يتابع ويغطي عمليات المقاومة في عفرين ويوثقها. كما عمل لسنوات طويلة على توثيق أوضاع شعبنا المهجّر إلى مناطق الشهباء. مؤخراً؛ وعندما كان يعمل على متابعة وتغطية احتجاجات المدنيين في سد تشرين؛ جرى استهدافه.
يعد “عكيد روج” مقاتلاً مضحياً وشجاعاً في كل جبهات الحرب والمقاومة، واحتل مكانه في كل نقطة للمقاومة ضمن ثورة روجآفا وعمل على تغطيتها إعلامياً، وأحيا ميراث الإعلام الحر في حياته، ولم يبتعد ولو قيد أنملة عن متابعة الحقيقة. ولهذا السبب أصبح هدفاً للاحتلال التركي.
إننا، في الوقت الذي ندين دولة الاحتلال التركي على جرائمها المستمرة، نطالب جميع المؤسسات الدولية ومنظمات حماية الصحفيين، بألا يظلوا صامتين أمام استهداف الصحفيين. ونستذكر رفيقنا “عكيد روج” بكل إجلال واحترام، ونتقدم بأحر التعازي إلى عائلته وشعبنا. ونجدد عهدنا بأن نسير على دربه، وأن نتمسك بنهج الإعلام الحر حتى تحقيق النصر.
