Dr. Ahmed Al-Farra, Head of the Pediatrics Department at Nasser Medical Complex, announced that the death toll from the escalating polio disease in the Gaza Strip has risen to five, including four children and a 60-year-old woman. This follows the death of a child infected with the disease today.

Al-Farra explained that the Ministry of Health in Gaza has recorded approximately 100 cases of the disease, half of whom are children under the age of fifteen, while the other half are older.

He explained that the disease manifests in three scenarios: the first involves nerve weakness followed by spontaneous recovery, which accounts for approximately 30% of cases. The second involves the spread of the disease throughout the body without affecting the respiratory muscles, which also accounts for 30% of cases. The third scenario involves the disease reaching the respiratory muscles, requiring the patient to be placed on a ventilator, which often leads to death.

Meanwhile, the director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, Muhammad Abu Salmiya, confirmed that three children are at risk of death due to their progressive paralysis. He called for the urgent entry of medications for this and other diseases into the Gaza Strip.

The Nasser Medical Complex announced on Wednesday the death of a child from Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, as a result of the progressive polio disease.

Abu Salmiya called for the entry of polio medications into Gaza, as well as all missing medications, such as anesthesia, wound disinfectants, antibiotics, and cancer medications. He noted that the World Health Organization stated yesterday that the Strip's drug supply is almost zero.

He spoke about the malnutrition afflicting Gaza, stating that in May, approximately 3,000 to 4,000 cases of malnutrition were diagnosed. In June, the number rose to 7,000, then to 12,000 in July, and to 10,000 in August.

Abu Salmiya stressed that the famine is disproportionately affecting children. There are 320,000 children under the age of five, and 20,000 children in need of urgent hospital intervention, as there are no vitamins, nutritional supplements, or proteins. All that is available is saline and some sugar solution to keep them alive.

He also revealed that 55,000 pregnant women suffer from malnutrition in the Gaza Strip, noting that malnutrition has led to immunodeficiency and premature births in incubators.

In the absence of clean drinking water in Gaza City, epidemics and intestinal flu are spreading, in addition to the spread of skin diseases due to the hot weather in the Gaza Strip.

The director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex told Al Jazeera that hospitals are overwhelmed by the large number of wounded and starving patients, but they are unable to provide services due to the complete collapse of the health system. He cited the example of patients with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney dialysis who are suffering without access to treatment.

 أعلن رئيس قسم الأطفال في مجمع ناصر الطبي، الدكتور أحمد الفرا، أن عدد الوفيات نتيجة الإصابة بمرض الشلل المتصاعد في قطاع غزة ارتفع إلى خمس حالات، بينها أربع وفيات لأطفال وسيدة تبلغ من العمر 60 عامًا، وذلك عقب تسجيل وفاة طفل مصاب بالمرض اليوم.

وأوضح الفرا أن وزارة الصحة في غزة سجلت قرابة 100 إصابة بالمرض، نصفهم من الأطفال دون سن الخامسة عشرة، فيما ينتمي النصف الآخر إلى الفئات العمرية الأكبر.

وبيّن أن المرض يظهر بثلاثة سيناريوهات؛ الأول يتمثل بضعف في الأعصاب يتبعه تعافٍ تلقائي ويشكل نحو 30% من الحالات، أما الثاني فيشهد انتشارًا للمرض في أنحاء الجسم من دون التأثير على عضلات الجهاز التنفسي، ويمثل أيضًا 30% من الحالات، في حين يشمل السيناريو الثالث وصول المرض إلى عضلات الجهاز التنفسي، ما يستدعي وضع المريض على جهاز تنفس صناعي وغالبًا ما يؤدي إلى الوفاة.

فيما  أكد مدير مجمع الشفاء الطبي محمد أبو سلمية - أن هناك 3 أطفال يواجهون خطر الموت بسبب إصابتهم بمرض الشلل المتصاعد، ودعا إلى التعجيل بإدخال الأدوية الخاصة بهذا المرض وبقية الأمراض إلى قطاع غزة.

وأعلن مجمع ناصر الطبي اليوم الأربعاء وفاة طفل من مدينة خان يونس جنوبي قطاع غزة نتيجة إصابته بمرض شلل الأطفال المتصاعد.

وطالب أبو سلمية بإدخال الأدوية الخاصة بعلاج شلل الأطفال إلى غزة، وجميع الأدوية المفقودة مثل أدوية التخدير والأدوية التي تعقم الجروح والمضادات الحيوية والأدوية الخاصة بمرض السرطان، وأشار إلى أن منظمة الصحة العالمية قالت أمس إن رصيد القطاع من الأدوية شارفت الصفر تقريبا.

وتحدث عن سوء التغذية الذي يضرب غزة، وقال إن في مايو/أيار الماضي تم تشخيص حوالي 3 آلاف إلى 4 آلاف حالة سوء تغذية، وفي يونيو/حزيران ارتفع العدد إلى 7 آلاف، ثم ارتفع إلى 12 ألفا في يوليو/تموز، وفي أغسطس/آب ارتفع العدد إلى 10 آلاف.

وأكد أبو سلمية أن المجاعة تضرب بشكل كبير فئة الأطفال، فهناك 320 ألف طفل أقل من دون الخامسة، وهناك 20 ألف طفل هم بحاجة إلى تدخل عاجل داخل المستشفيات، حيث لا تتوفر لا فيتامينات ولا مكملات غذائية ولا بروتينات، وكل ما يتوفر هو المحلول الملحي وبعض محلول السكر لإبقائهم على الحياة.

كما كشف أن 55 ألف امرأة حامل تعاني من سوء التغذية في القطاع، مشيرا إلى أن سوء التغذية أدى إلى نقص المناعة وإلى ولادات مبكرة في الحضانات.

وفي ظل عدم توفر المياه الصالحة للشرب في مدينة غزة، تنتشر الأوبئة والنزلات المعوية، بالإضافة إلى انتشار الأمراض الجلدية بسبب الجو الحار في قطاع غزة.

وقال مدير مجمع الشفاء الطبي للجزيرة إن المستشفيات أغرقت بسبب العدد الكبير من الجرحى والمجوعين، لكنهم غير قادرين على تقديم الخدمات لهم بسبب الانهيار الكامل للمنظومة الصحية، وأعطى مثلا بمرضى القلب والسكر والضغط وغسيل الكلى الذين يعانون دون التمكن من علاجهم.
