"I couldn't write anything after returning to class. I was trying to process what had happened. It was as if something had exploded in my heart, not just outside of school. I was very scared," is how student Ranim Shukr describes the first moments following the Israeli airstrike on the Shamstar Heights (located in the Baalbek-Hermel Governorate, Lebanon) on Tuesday morning. She was taking her final exam at Shamstar Public High School, as part of the official high school exams.

The morning of the final day was unlike any of the five days that preceded it, which took place amid tight security measures implemented by Lebanese Army units and Internal Security Forces personnel inside and around the centers. However, this stability quickly dissipated in the Bekaa Governorate when Israeli aircraft launched a series of raids targeting the eastern and western mountain ranges, particularly the heights of Bouday, Qasr Naba, and Shamstar. One of the airstrikes landed near the high school, causing a massive explosion that shook windows, shattered glass, and spread chaos throughout the school. This caused panic among students and transformed the examination halls into scenes of fear and confusion.

Panic
"As soon as we heard the sound, we started screaming and crying," said Rehana Al-Halani (science stream). "Some students ran towards the doors, while others remained in shock. Everyone thought the bombing had targeted the school because the sound was so loud." She continued, "The teachers tried to calm us down and allowed parents to enter the playground to be with us. The army also reassured us, but it wasn't easy."

Raneem Shukr (sociology and economics stream) said the moment of the bombing "was terrifying in every sense of the word." She added, "I couldn't believe I was still alive. We no longer knew whether to complete the exam or leave. Some students started crying, while others remained silent, unable to continue."

Student Ranim Musawi (science stream), who was inside one of the classrooms at Shamstar High School, told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, "The shelling was in the outskirts, but the blast was horrific. The windows were shattered and the door was torn off. Screaming and crying filled the school, and many students feared for their families, not just themselves." She continued, "The teachers tried to control the situation and asked us to stay calm, while the army reassured us. We waited a little before completing the exam, and the supervision eased, and we were allowed to work at our leisure, and the time was extended."

Mehdi Nassar, a student in the economics and sociology stream, described the moment as an "internal explosion." He says, "I never imagined we would complete the exam in an atmosphere like this: between the sound of ambulances, the terror of our families, and the sound of planes above us. There was no such thing as concentration. We started writing with our minds off the road. We forgot what we had studied."

No Injuries at School
An administrative source at Shamstar Public High School told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the Israeli airstrike occurred around 10:30 a.m., during the exam break. He considered this to be a blessing from God, because if the strike had occurred during a presentation, there could have been injuries among students or faculty members. He added, "Some parents rushed to the school immediately after hearing the sound of the explosion and were allowed to enter the outdoor playground to calm the students and provide psychological support." Zainab al-Ali, the mother of one of the students, was among the first to arrive at the school after the bombing. She said, "We could hear the screaming. We wanted to see with our own eyes that our children were okay. We expect nothing but the worst from the enemy." Yesterday morning, Monday, the day before the incident, Minister of Education and Higher Education Rima Karami inspected two official examination centers in the town of Bednayel in the Baalbek District, one for high school and the other for vocational education. She toured the halls and observed the exam atmosphere, listening to students' comments on the quality of the questions and the organization. She stated, "Despite the difficult circumstances Lebanon has experienced, we prove through these exams that challenges do not weaken us, nor do they stand as an obstacle to our insistence on making the educational process a priority for the Lebanese."

"لم أتمكن من كتابة شيء بعد العودة إلى الصف. كنت أحاول استيعاب ما حصل. كأنّ أمراً ما انفجر في قلبي وليس فقط خارج المدرسة. خفت كثيراً"، هكذا تصف الطالبة رنيم شكر اللحظات الأولى التي أعقبت الغارة الإسرائيلية على مرتفعات شمسطار (تقع في محافظة بعلبك الهرمل - لبنان)، صباح اليوم الثلاثاء، بينما كانت تؤدّي امتحانها الأخير في ثانوية شمسطار الرسمية، في إطار الامتحانات الرسمية لشهادة الثانوية العامة.

لم يكن صباح اليوم الأخير كغيره من الأيام الخمسة التي سبقته، والتي جرت وسط إجراءات أمنية مشدّدة تولّتها وحدات من الجيش اللبناني وعناصر قوى الأمن الداخلي داخل المراكز وفي محيطها. لكن ذلك الاستقرار سرعان ما تلاشى في محافظة البقاع، حين شنّ الطيران الإسرائيلي سلسلة غارات طاولت السلسلتين الشرقية والغربية، لا سيما مرتفعات بوداي، قصرنبا، وشمسطار. إحدى الغارات سقطت على مقربة من الثانوية، متسببةً بعصف انفجاري هائل، اهتزّت معه النوافذ، وتطاير الزجاج، وعمّت الفوضى في أرجاء المدرسة، ما أثار حالة من الذعر بين الطلاب، وحوّل قاعات الامتحانات إلى مشاهد من الخوف والارتباك.

حالة هلع
تقول ريحانة الحلاني (فرع العلوم): "بمجرد ما سمعنا الصوت، بدأ الصراخ والبكاء. ركض طلاب صوب الأبواب، فيما ظل آخرون في مكانهم في حالة صدمة. الجميع اعتقد أن القصف استهدف المدرسة، لأن الصوت كان قوياً جداً". تتابع: "حاول الأساتذة تهدئتنا، وسمحوا للأهالي بالدخول إلى الملعب ليكونوا إلى جانبنا. كما عمد الجيش إلى طمأنتنا، إلا أن الأمر لم يكن سهلاً". 



من جهتها، تقول رنيم شكر (فرع الاجتماع والاقتصاد) إن لحظة القصف "كانت مرعبة بكل معنى الكلمة". تضيف: "لم أصدق أنني ما زلت على قيد الحياة. لم نعد نعرف إذا كنا سنكمل الامتحان أو نغادر. بعض التلاميذ راحوا يبكون، فيما ظل آخرون صامتين غير قادرين على المتابعة".


أما الطالبة رنيم موسوي (فرع العلوم)، التي كانت داخل إحدى القاعات في ثانوية شمسطار، فتقول لـ"العربي الجديد" إن "القصف كان في الجرود، لكن العصف كان رهيباً. تكسرت الشبابيك وانخلع الباب. الصراخ والبكاء عمّا المدرسة، وخاف الكثير من التلاميذ على أهلهم وليس فقط على أنفسهم". تتابع: "الأساتذة حاولوا ضبط الوضع وطلبوا منّا الهدوء، فيما طمأننا الجيش. انتظرنا قليلاً قبل إكمال الامتحان، وخفّت المراقبة، وسمحوا لنا بالعمل على مهل، وتم تمديد الوقت".

من جهته، يصف الطالب في فرع الاقتصاد والاجتماع، مهدي نصار، اللحظة بـ"الانفجار الداخلي". يقول: "لم أتخيل أن نكمل الامتحان في جو كهذا، أي ما بين صوت الإسعافات، ورعب أهلنا، وصوت الطائرات فوقنا. لم يبق شيء اسمه تركيز. صرنا نكتب وعقلنا في الخارج. نسينا ما درسناه".

لا إصابات في المدرسة
يوضح مصدر إداري في ثانوية شمسطار الرسمية، في حديث لـ"العربي الجديد"، أنّ الغارة الإسرائيلية وقعت قرابة الساعة العاشرة والنصف صباحاً، أي خلال استراحة الامتحانات، معتبراً أن "هذا من لطف الله، لأنه لو كانت الضربة خلال تقديم المادة، لكان من الممكن أن تُسجّل إصابات بين الطلاب أو الهيئة التعليمية". يضيف أنّ "بعض الأهالي هرعوا إلى المدرسة فور سماع صوت الانفجار، وتم السماح لهم بالدخول إلى الملعب الخارجي لتهدئة الطلاب ومواكبتهم نفسياً". كانت زينب العلي، والدة إحدى الطالبات، من بين أولى الواصلات إلى المدرسة بعد القصف. تقول: "كنا نسمع صوت الصراخ. كنا نريد أن نرى بأعيننا أن أولادنا بخير. لا نتوقع من العدو إلا الأسوأ". 

وكانت وزيرة التربية والتعليم العالي ريما كرامي قد تفقدت، صباح أمس الاثنين، أي قبل يوم من الحادثة، مركزين للامتحانات الرسمية في بلدة بدنايل في قضاء بعلبك، أحدهما للثانوية العامة والثاني للتعليم المهني. وتنقلت بين القاعات واطّلعت على أجواء الامتحانات، مستمعةً إلى ملاحظات الطلاب حول مستوى الأسئلة والتنظيم. واعتبرت أنّه "رغم الظروف الصعبة التي مرّ بها لبنان، نثبت من خلال هذه الامتحانات أن التحديات لا تضعفنا، ولا تقف عائقاً أمام إصرارنا على أن تكون العملية التعليمية أولوية بالنسبة إلى اللبنانيين".
