Published on: The moment we have been dreading since October 7th has arrived: We have lost one of our dearest colleagues in Gaza. With a heavy heart, Anera announces the martyrdom of our colleague, Musa Shawa, a martyr of humanitarian work, on March 8th, 2024, in Az-Zawayda, Deir al-Balah. Musa was killed by an Israeli airstrike while wearing an Anera T-shirt after returning from work in Rafah. His wife and three children sustained moderate injuries, and his youngest son, Karim, six years old, is currently receiving treatment in intensive care. Musa, along with several other members of his family (we do not yet know the exact number), was killed in an Israeli airstrike. He was 41 years old and had been living in Gaza City before he and his family were forced to evacuate to Deir al-Balah after the war began. Musa was a trusted member of the Anera team in Gaza for nearly 15 years, starting out as a driver and guard and later moving into the role of logistics and support coordinator. Musa’s knowledge and experience were invaluable in getting aid to where it was needed most. He was a skilled problem solver and a seasoned humanitarian who passionately believed in Anera’s mission. “Musa was the first face I saw when I entered Gaza and the last when I left,” says Sandra Rashid, Anera’s country director in Palestine. “He made sure I was safe the entire time I was in Gaza. He was a caretaker and had so much love for his family. Doaa, his wife, was the love of his life, and he would do anything for his children. He was so committed to Anera and his work, and his Anera family meant the world to him. Today I am devastated and shocked. I can’t believe I will never hear his beautiful laugh again!” “For me, Musa was usually the first and last person to hug me every time I entered and left Gaza. It is deeply painful to know that I will not get that hug on my next trip to Gaza,” said Sean Carroll, Anera’s Executive Director. “Anera, Gaza, Palestine, and the world have lost a committed humanitarian who worked tirelessly to find a path to hope, and he was martyred for his efforts. We pray for the full and speedy recovery of his injured wife and children, and we will continue to work for an immediate, comprehensive, and just ceasefire.” This tragic news underscores Anera’s urgent appeal to stop this war now. Too many innocent people have been killed! Enough is enough!
