The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate said on Friday that the martyrdom of journalist Akram al-Shafei, following a "painful treatment journey" from a fatal injury he sustained during the siege of al-Shifa Hospital, highlights the suffering of wounded journalists.
In a statement, the Syndicate called on relevant parties to pressure the Israeli occupation authorities to facilitate the exit of journalists injured as a result of the aggression for treatment outside the Gaza Strip. It explained that it had submitted a request for a medical referral for al-Shafei for treatment abroad, but the occupation refused.
The Syndicate indicated that there are approximately 25 journalists in the Gaza Strip in urgent need of treatment abroad.
With al-Shafei's martyrdom, the number of martyred journalists has risen to 103, according to the Syndicate.

قالت نقابة الصحفيين الفلسطينيين، اليوم الجمعة إن استشهاد الصحفي أكرم الشافعي بعد "رحلة علاج مؤلمة" من إصابة دامية تعرض لها أثناء حصار مستشفى "الشفاء"، يسلّط الضوء على معاناة الصحفيين الجرحى.
وناشدت نقابة الصحفيين -في بيان- الجهات ذات العلاقة بالضغط على سلطات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لتسهيل خروج الصحفيين المصابين بجروح نتيجة العدوان للعلاج خارج قطاع غزة، موضحة أنها كانت تقدمت بطلب تحويلة طبية للشافعي بغرض العلاج في الخارج غير أن الاحتلال رفض ذلك.
وأشارت النقابة لوجود نحو 25 من الصحفيين في قطاع غزة بحاجة ماسة للعلاج بالخارج.
وباستشهاد الشافعي يرتفع عدد الشهداء الصحفيين إلى 103 وفق النقابة.
