At 90 years of age, Holocaust survivor Belina Ashkenazi was one of the ten victims killed by Iran’s missile attack in Bat Yam on June 14. She and her husband, Chaim Ashkenazi, also a survivor, could not reach shelter in time. Thankfully, Chaim, who is 100 years old, survived and has been moved to a nursing home close to their daughter.Holocaust survivor Yvette Shmilovitz z’l was identified as the fourth victim in Petach Tikva after her home sustained a direct missile strike during the night of June 15 – 16. Her three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren survive her.Belina was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and during the Holocaust was expelled from her hometown and forced to live in the Kyustendil ghetto. Belina and Chaim raised three children and were blessed with five grandchildren.Born in Galati, Romania, Yvette and her family were restricted to living in the Galati ghetto from June 1941 to August 1944. Thrown out of their home and schools, they were forced to clean the streets and wear the yellow star. At 95 years old, Yvette had been living alone since the passing of her husband several years ago, followed by the death of her only daughter. A chemist by profession and a high school teacher, she remained sharp until her final days. Belina and Yvette's deaths are both tragedies. They, like many Holocaust survivors, faced unthinkable horrors as children. The Claims Conference keeps the welfare of Holocaust survivors at the forefront of our thoughts, and we are working to respond to and assess the changing needs of both survivors and our partners organizations in Israel.Across Israel, we pray for peace and security for our coworkers, friends, and families, and remind survivors that they are not alone. If you or a survivor you know needs additional support during these times, please reach out to the Claims Conference help center: www.claimscon.org/survivor-services/helpcenters#VanishingWitnesses #RememberThis #PartnersInCare
