The son-in-law of this martyr says about the days he was with this martyr: "We were both colleagues and always together in the Red Crescent. It is very difficult for me to believe that he is no longer with us. Mehdi was like a brother to me. This man was always with the people and especially tried to help those who were not in good economic conditions and to solve the problems of the rural people where we lived, even with the smallest possible task.”
He adds: “I remember well that the people of the village always looked to him to solve their work problems and Mr. Mehdi was always mentioned by the people and he was very happy to be able to help the people of the village. On the day of the accident, it was not his turn to go on a mission, but since he was always on the front lines of service, he did not allow any of us to carry out operations and he went on a mission himself.”
The cousin of martyr Mehdi Zartaji continues: “According to the mission, we had an injured person in the Tabriz radar area and we had to transfer this injured person to the medical centers. He was on the way to the radar when the car was hit by a missile and he was martyred. Mehdi always spoke of love for martyrdom and talked about being able to achieve this dream.”
He continues: "The voice of the Mahdi still whispers in my ears, saying that one day this child-killing Zionist regime will be destroyed by God's grace and peace will return to the occupied lands. Now I am certain that the blood of these martyrs will cover the rosy shroud of this genocidal and criminal regime, and Iran will reach the shore of peace thanks to these martyrs."

پسردایی این شهید در ارتباط با روزهایی که در کنار این شهید بود می‌گوید: «هر دو همکار و همیشه در هلال احمر کنار هم بودیم. باور اینکه دیگر بین ما نیست، برایم بسیار سخت است. مهدی برایم مثل یک برادر بود. همیشه این مرد در کنار مردم بود و به ویژه سعی می‌کرد به آن‌هایی که در شرایط اقتصادی خوبی قرار نداشتند، کمک کند و حتی با کوچکترین کار ممکن گرهی از مشکلات مردم روستایی که آنجا زندگی می‌کردیم باز کند.»
او می‌افزاید: «خوب به یاد دارم مردم روستا همیشه برای حل مشکلات کاری‌شان به دنبال او می‌گشتند و آقا مهدی از زبان مردم نمی‌افتاد و از اینکه می‌تواند کمک حال مردم روستا باشد بسیار خوشحال بود. در روز حادثه هم نوبت ایشان نبود که به ماموریت برود، اما از آنجا که همیشه در صف اول خدمت بود اجازه نداد از ما کسی اقدام به انجام عملیات کند و خودش راهی ماموریت شد.»
پسردایی شهید مهدی زرتاجی ادامه می‌دهد: «طبق ماموریت در منطقه رادار تبریز مصدوم داشتیم و باید این مصدوم را به مراکز درمانی منتقل می‌کردیم. ایشان در مسیر رادار بودند که خودرو مورد اصابت موشک قرار گرفت و به شهادت رسید. مهدی همیشه از عشق به شهادت می‌گفت و از اینکه بتواند به این آرزو دست یابد صحبت می‌کرد.»
او در ادامه می‌گوید: «هنوز هم صدای مهدی در گوشم زمزمه می‌کند که می‌گفت روزی این رژیم کودک‌کش صهیونیستی با لطف الهی از بین خواهد رفت و آرامش به سرزمین‌های اشغالی باز خواهد گشت. اکنون حتم دارم که خون‌های این شهیدان گلگون کفن دامن این رژیم نسل‌کش و جنایتکار را خواهد گرفت و ایران به لطف همین شهیدان به ساحل آرامش خواهد رسید.»
