forensicarchitecture 2wOn 23 June, the day before the ceasefire which brought their illegal 12-day war on Iran to an end, the Israeli military launched an attack on Evin prison, north of Tehran. Media reports called it a ‘symbolic’ attack, while Israel's foreign minister called it an ‘act of liberation’—both descriptions dehumanise Iranians, particularly the reported 79 lives lost in the attack. Our satellite image analysis suggests there were six strikes, on (1) the south gate, the prosecutor’s office, and the reception; (2) a covered car park; (3) the internal gate, administrative building, the prison hospital and quarantine building; (4) prison buildings, including wards 4 and Ward 209, plus the rear of the hospital, and barracks; (5) prison ward 240; and (6) the north gate, the judicial complex, and the visitation centre. Four of these (1, 3, 4, and 6) were confirmed by ground-level images. Evin Prison is a well-known and notorious prison—but it is not a military target. The thousands of prisoners held there—including political prisoners—were unable to escape the threat of bombardment. The complex also houses civilian staff, including doctors and nurses, as well as conscripted soldiers. Israel’s attack on Evin is not an act of liberation; it is a war crime.
