UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of photojournalists Ibrahim and Ayman Al-Gharbawi in Palestine
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, condemns the killing of photojournalists Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Gharbawi and Ayman Mohammed Al-Gharbawi in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, Palestine, on 26 April 2024.

I condemn the killing of Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Gharbawi and Ayman Mohammed Al-Gharbawi and call for a transparent and thorough investigation. I reiterate my urgent call to all parties to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2222 (2015), which stipulates that journalists, media professionals, and associated personnel covering conflicts must be protected as civilians.

Ibrahim Mohammed Al-Gharbawi and his brother, Ayman Mohammed Al-Gharbawi, were freelance photojournalists. They were reportedly killed in a drone strike while filming in the Hamad residential city of Khan Yunis.

UNESCO has released statements on the deaths of at least 31 journalists and media workers in the line of duty in Palestine since October 2023. This tally excludes deaths unrelated to their work. Palestinian journalists covering events in Gaza were awarded the 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize in May.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building, and coordination of the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.

أدين مقتل إبراهيم محمد الغرباوي وأيمن محمد الغرباوي، وأدعو إلى إجراء تحقيق شفاف وشامل. وإنني أكرّر دعوتي العاجلة إلى الأطراف كافة بغية الامتثال إلى القرار رقم 2222/2015 الصادر عن مجلس الأمن التابع للأمم المتحدة، والذي ينص على وجوب حماية الصحفيين والإعلاميين والأفراد المرتبطين بوسائل الإعلام الذين يغطون النزاعات باعتبارهم مدنيين.

كان إبراهيم محمد الغرباوي وشقيقه أيمن محمد الغرباوي يعملان مصورَين صحفيَّين مستقلَّين. وأفادت التقارير بأنهما قُتلا في غارة جوية شنتها طائرة مسيرة وهُما يصوران باستخدام طائرة درون في مدينة حمد السكنية في خان يونس. 

أصدرت اليونسكو بيانات بشأن وفاة ما لا يقل عن 31 صحفياً وموظفاً في وسائل الإعلام وهم على رأس عملهم في فلسطين منذ شهر تشرين الأول/ أكتوبر 2023، ولا تضم هذه الحصيلة أي وفاة في ظروف لا صلة لها بمهنتهم. حصد صحفيون فلسطينيون يغطون أحداث غزة جائزة اليونسكو/غييرمو كانو العالمية لحرية الصحافة لعام 2024 في شهر أيار/ مايو.

تعمل اليونسكو على تعزيز سلامة الصحفيين من خلال التوعية العالمية بدورهم المهني، ومن خلال بناء القدرات وتنسيق تنفيذ خطة عمل الأمم المتحدة بشأن سلامة الصحفيين ومسألة الإفلات من العقاب.
