UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of journalist Hassan Hamad in Palestine
The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, condemned the killing of journalist Hassan Hamad in the Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza, Palestine, on 6 October.

I condemn the killing of Hassan Hamad and call for a thorough and transparent investigation. Journalists play a vital role in bringing news to the world and ensuring the right of local populations to access information. I reiterate my call for respect for Resolution 2222, adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council in 2015, on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel due to their status as civilians in conflict situations, which was recently reaffirmed in the Charter for the Future.

Hassan Hamad was a 19-year-old freelance journalist working for Mediatown, a media company, who was reportedly covering a military incursion when he was injured by a drone strike.

UNESCO has reported the deaths of at least 40 journalists and media professionals while working in Palestine since October 2023. This figure does not include deaths unrelated to their work. The 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize was awarded in May to Palestinian journalists covering events in Gaza.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists by raising global awareness of their professional role, building capacity, and coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.

أدين مقتل حسن حمد وأدعو إلى إجراء تحقيق شامل وشفاف. يؤدي الصحفيون دوراً أساسياً في نقل الأخبار إلى العالم، وضمان إعمال حق السكان المحليين في الحصول على المعلومات. وأكرر دعوتي لاحترام القرار رقم 2222 الذي اعتمده مجلس الأمن التابع للأمم المتحدة بالإجماع في عام 2015 بشأن حماية الصحفيين والإعلاميين والأفراد المرتبطين بوسائل الإعلام بحكم وضعهم كمدنيين في حالات النزاع، وهو ما أُعيد تأكيده مؤخراً في ميثاق الأمم المتحدة من أجل المستقبل.

كان حسن حمد صحفياً مستقلاً يبلغ من العمر 19 عاماً، وكان يعمل لصالح شركة "ميديا تاون" الإعلامية، وأفادت تقارير بأنّه كان يغطي عملية توغل عسكرية عندما أصيب من جراء غارة نفذتها طائرة مسيرة.

أَبلغت اليونسكو عن وفاة ما لا يقل عن 40 صحفياً ومهنياً عاملاً في وسائل الإعلام في أثناء عملهم في فلسطين منذ تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 2023، ولا يتضمن هذا العدد الوفيات التي حصلت في ظروف لا ترتبط بمهنتهم. وكانت جائزة اليونسكو/غييرمو كانو العالمية لحرية الصحافة لعام 2024 قد مُنحت في أيار/مايو لصحفيين فلسطينيين يغطون أحداث غزة. 

تعزز اليونسكو سلامة الصحفيين من خلال التوعية العالمية بدورهم المهني، ومن خلال بناء القدرات وتنسيق تنفيذ خطة عمل الأمم المتحدة بشأن سلامة الصحفيين ومسألة الإفلات من العقاب.
